Had a visitor outside my bedroom window this morning:

A barred owl sheltering from the rain on a little tree branch under a larger tree branch in the woods

The Elephant Trunk Nebula - IC1396 Image captured with a Celestron C8 with Starizona Hyperstar, ZWO ASI2600MC Pro and IDAS NBZ UHS Filter, 120' x 30, Bortle 5, 08/27/2026. #astrophotography

The Elephant Trunk Nebula looks like a dramatic, sculpted pillar of dark cosmic dust reaching out from a glowing red‑orange cloud. Even if you’ve never seen it before, it has a very recognizable “shape” that makes the name feel perfect.

What it looks like in a typical astrophotograph
A long, twisting dark column
The trunk itself appears dark and opaque, like a shadow cutting through the bright emission nebula behind it. It has a gentle curve, giving it that “elephant trunk” posture.

A bit of a late August astro photo dump. The weather has been atrocious here in the midwest this summer for any #astrophotography so I'm grateful for having 3 scopes set up, polar aligned and Hyperstars/fast scopes.

Seen leaving court the other day:

A blue SUV-style car parked on the street with a painting on the entire side of it of Deadpool laying on his side with his head on his hand and under it it says big lettering, "Who's your daddy"

Finally had clear skies last night and was able to process one of the images that I was able to capture. 🔭 #astrophotography

An image of NGC 4565, the Needle Galaxy, that is located in the Coma Berenices constellation 30 to 50 million light years away and is an edge on spiral galaxy with a dark dust lane cutting across the middle of the Galaxy which blocks and redness the light from the interior. If one were able to travel at the speed of light, it would take 30 to 50 million years to reach the Needle Galaxy. And it took 30 to 50 million light years for the light we are seeing in the image to reach my camera sensor. 🤯 mind blown

A few objects I was able to image last week with the Celestron C11 & ZWO ASI294MC Pro: M81, Jupiter, the Moon, M51. 🔭 #astrophotography

An image of M108, also known as NGC 3556, a barred spiral galaxy located in the constellation Ursa Major, notable for its edge-on appearance and active star-forming regions.

An image of Jupiter, the largest planet in the Solar System, a gas giant composed mainly of hydrogen and helium, with a striking system of cloud bands, storms, rings, and moons.

An image of the Moon at 84% illumination

An image of M51, also known as the Whirlpool Galaxy, a grand-design spiral galaxy located in the constellation Canes Venatici, famous for its prominent spiral arms and interaction with the dwarf galaxy NGC 5195.

Astro Dog always guarding my telescopes and waiting for clear skies, too.

A white German shepherd laying in the snow next to three telescopes covered up with snow on them, patiently waiting for clear skies.
