Oh I can answer that question: the reason is still the same as it was 100 years ago - because trans people are the living proof that societal norms are constructs, not something written in stone, they challenge status quo simply by existing, they teach us that you can always get to know yourself better, you can always change your life, yourself and keep learning how to live a happier, more authentic and fulfilling life. And all of those are very scary to conservatives, because their whole ideology is based upon actively avoiding thinking deeper about ourselves and the reality we live in and just taking those at a face value. LGBTQ people have been the first victims of any authoritarian regime for a long time because our existence is a reminder that our world is much more complex than fascists and populists try to convince people.
