Explanation: Beautiful emission nebula NGC 6164 was created by a rare, hot, luminous O-type star, some 40 times as massive as the Sun. Seen at the center of the cosmic cloud, the star is a mere 3 to 4 million years old. In another three to four million years the massive star will end its life in a supernova explosion. Spanning around 4 light-years, the nebula itself has a bipolar symmetry. That makes it similar in appearance to more common and familiar planetary nebulae - the gaseous shrouds surrounding dying sun-like stars. Also like many planetary nebulae, NGC 6164 has been found to have an extensive, faint halo, revealed in this deep image of the region. Expanding into the surrounding interstellar medium, the material in the halo is likely from an earlier active phase of the O star. This gorgeous telescopic view is a composite of extensive narrow-band image data, highlighting glowing atomic hydrogen gas in red and oxygen in greenish hues, with broadband data for the surrounding starfield. Also known as the Dragon's Egg nebula, NGC 6164 is 4,200 light-years away in the right-angled southern constellation of Norma.

This new image showcases NGC 346, a dazzling young star cluster in the Small Magellanic Cloud. The Small Magellanic Cloud is a satellite galaxy of the Milky Way, located 200,000 light-years away in the constellation Tucana. The Small Magellanic Cloud is less rich in elements heavier than helium—what astronomers call metals—than the Milky Way. This makes conditions in the galaxy similar to what existed in the early universe.

Although several images of NGC 346 have been released previously, this view includes new data and is the first to combine Hubble observations made at infrared, optical, and ultraviolet wavelengths into an intricately detailed view of this vibrant star-forming factory.

NGC 346 is home to more than 2,500 newborn stars. The cluster’s most massive stars, many times more massive than our Sun, blaze with an intense blue light in this image. The glowing pink nebula and snakelike dark clouds are the remnant of the birthsite of the stars in the cluster.

The inhabitants of this cluster are stellar sculptors, carving out a bubble from the nebula. NGC 346’s hot, massive stars produce intense radiation and fierce stellar winds that pummel the billowing gas of their birthplace and begin to disperse the surrounding nebula.

The nebula, named N66, is the brightest example of an H II (pronounced ‘H-two’) region in the Small Magellanic Cloud. H II regions are set aglow by ultraviolet light from hot young stars like those in NGC 346. The presence of the brilliant nebula indicates the young age of the star cluster, as an H II region shines only as long as the stars that power it—a mere few million years for the massive stars pictured here.

The Skull and Crossbones Nebula

NGC 2467, a vibrant emission nebula located in the constellation Puppis, approximately 13,000 light-years from Earth, this nebula is a stellar nursery where new stars are being born.

The bright red 'eye' of the skull is a region of particularly dense gas, possibly surrounding a young star or a protostar. The surrounding dark lanes are molecular clouds, rich in dust, which obscure the light from the stars behind them, hinting at areas where future star formation could occur

The Cone Nebula and amazing star-forming region in the constellation Monoceros, located about 2,700 light-years away.

The Cone Nebula ( top left)is a dark pillar of gas and dust about 7 light-years long, gradually being eroded by intense stellar winds. William Herschel discovered it in 1784.

Next to it is the Christmas Tree Cluster (NGC 2264) spans approximately 30 light-years and consists of young, hot stars emitting radiation that shapes the surrounding nebula.

To the right, the Fox Fur Nebula is a complex, textured region of illuminated gas and dust, named for its resemblance to an animal pelt. Its striking colors come from a mix of emission, reflection, and dark nebulae interacting with the energetic stars of NGC 2264.

At the bottom right, IC 447 is a 25 light-year-wide reflection nebula, where dust scatters the light of nearby stars, creating a soft blue glow. It was first cataloged by Edward Barnard in the late 19th century.

This entire region is an active stellar nursery, where new stars continue to form from collapsing clouds of gas and dust.

NGC 7822 is an emission nebula visible in the constellation Cepheus.
It is located in the eastern part of the constellation Cepheus, about 9° north of the bright star Caph, in a stretch of the Milky Way strongly obscured by interstellar dust and unlit nebulae; the most suitable period for its observation in the evening sky falls between the months of July and December and is considerably easier for observers located in the regions of the Earth's northern hemisphere, where it is circumpolar up to the warm temperate regions.

RCW 85

From the 1960 astronomical catalog of Rodgers, Campbell and Whiteoak, emission region RCW 85 shines in southern night skies between bright stars Alpha and Beta Centauri. About 5,000 light years distant, the hazy interstellar cloud of glowing hydrogen gas and dust is faint. But detailed structures along well- defined rims within RCW 85 are traced in this cosmic skyscape composed of 28 hours of narrow and broadband exposures. Suggestive of dramatic shapes in other stellar nurseries where natal clouds of gas and dust are sculpted by energetic winds and radiation from newborn stars, the tantalizing nebula has been called the Devil's Tower. This telescopic frame would span around 100 light-years at the estimated distance of RCW 85.

The Mermaid or Betta Fish Nebula
The supernova remnant G296.5+10.0, located in Centaurus, spans a vast area exceeding 1 degree near Rho Centauri and was initially discovered in 1974.
It's exact origin still remains a mystery.
The first image captured of the greater extent of this SNR was by Marco Lorenzi in Feb this year.
I was immediately taken by the area described as looking like the Betta Fish (Siamese fight fish) and when oriented more horizontally, bore a striking resemblance to a Mermaid as described by Andrew Murrell in his image.
For my image, I concentrated on the area resembling the Betta fish or Mermaid (depending on your sea creature preference).

Pointy Veil in Pyxis

Captured during my vacations back in April, this striking image showcases a rarely photographed nebula in the southern constellation of Pyxis. There doesn’t seem to be a universally accepted name for it, therefore I dubbed it the Pointy Veil. This structure (part of SH2-312 - also known as the Great Pyxis Nebula) is thought to be linked to the Vela Supernova Remnant. I found this target while browsing a hydrogen alpha survey of the Milky Way and it seemed like a fun thing to photograph!

These bow shocks take shape when the star's vigorous stellar winds collide with the surrounding dense gas, akin to the effect of a swift boat cutting through water on a lake.

“My take on the intense nebulae surrounding the center of Cygnus' cross.

This is a great target for almost any camera/telescope combination. It's big and bright and shows up well with a duo-narrowband filter.

This is 6 hours of total exposure using my camera and telescope in the backyard!”

“I just finished processing the Carina Nebula that were taken on a recent trip to Australia. I took my Redcat 71, AM5 and tripod, and used a ASI2600MM camera, EFW, and ASIAir. I only had a few days to capture data (180sec subs). I was able to get about 2 hours of each channel: LRGB, Ha, S, & OIII using Astronomik filters. Processed with Astro Pixel Processor, PixInsight, and Light Room.

The Carina Nebula is primarily visible in the southern hemisphere. Also called Eta Carinae Nebula and NGC 3372; it is a large, complex area of bright and dark nebulosity in the constellation Carina, located in the Carina–Sagittarius Arm of the Milky Way galaxy. The nebula is approximately 8,500 light-years from Earth.”

“I named this photo "Hyperloop" - you probably know why.
Active area AR3664 - the cause of last weekend's visual confusion - is slowly leaving the visible part of the Sun's shield, but still can't forget about itself.
In the h-alpha band, beautiful plasma loops trapped in the powerful magnetic field of this extremely active region are perfectly visible.

Explanation: Looping through the Jovian system in the late 1990s, the Galileo spacecraft recorded stunning views of Europa and uncovered evidence that the moon's icy surface likely hides a deep, global ocean. Galileo's Europa image data has been remastered here, with improved calibrations to produce a color image approximating what the human eye might see. Europa's long curving fractures hint at the subsurface liquid water. The tidal flexing the large moon experiences in its elliptical orbit around Jupiter supplies the energy to keep the ocean liquid. But more tantalizing is the possibility that even in the absence of sunlight that process could also supply the energy to support life, making Europa one of the best places to look for life beyond Earth. The Juno spacecraft currently in Jovian orbit has also made repeated flybys of the water world, returning images along with data exploring Europa's habitability.

A Long Snaking Filament on the Sun. Image Credit & Copyright: Alan Friedman (September 13, 2022) #Astro #Astrophoto #Astrostills #Astrordinary #Astromeka #Sun
“Earlier this month, the Sun exhibited one of the longer filaments on record. Visible as the bright curving streak around the image center, the snaking filament's full extent was estimated to be over half of the Sun's radius -- more than 350,000 kilometers long. A filament is composed of hot gas held aloft by the Sun's magnetic field, so that viewed from the side it would appear as a raised prominence. A different, smaller prominence is simultaneously visible at the Sun's edge. The featured image is in false-color and color-inverted to highlight not only the filament but the Sun's carpet chromosphere. The bright dot on the upper right is actually a dark sunspot about the size of the Earth. Solar filaments typically last from hours to days, eventually collapsing to return hot plasma back to the Sun. Sometimes, though, they explode and expel particles into the Solar System, some of which trigger auroras on Earth. The pictured filament appeared in early September..”

The Witch's Head 🧙‍♀️ Nebula and Rigel (ImgCredit: Simone Curzi) #Astro #Astrophoto #Astrostills #Astromeka #Space #Nebula 🪐🌌🔭
“The Witch's Head Nebula and Rigel proved to be a real challenge in my astrophotography journey. The many hours of integration were collected in the months of November, December and January under the sky (bortle 4/5) of my small home observatory on the Adriatic coast. The processing was carried out using Pixinsight, and Bill Blanshan 's pixelmath formulas for both mixing the ha all rgb and stellar reduction were decisive for the result. The biggest obstacle turned out to be Rigel which, placed in the corner of my shooting frame, created some reflections due to my filters, especially on L,G and B. Clear skies to all!!”
