I can't believe my first International Astronautical Congress (IAC) was 10 years ago! That's when I received the Emerging Space Leaders grant and presented several research papers at the world's biggest space conference for the first time 😊. 1/

One of my favorite parts of this space conference is the exhibition hall. I meet friends, colleagues and even fans on every corner 😊, all while enjoying the many cool space stalls throughout. 1/

I find it fascinating that sometimes a thing that challenges us can become something that we end up loving. In my case, I thought my underwater simulated space mission would be something that I would struggle with and 1/

Working while travelling around the world can be very challenging. I always have to find time in between expeditions, presentations and other work commitments to respond to emails, fundraise and take care of other necessary matters. 1/

The 2027 calendars are here! 😊 I'm very excited to share these with you. They're calendars made from my pictures from Antarctica, Tibet, Alaska, South America and Iceland. One calendar has pictures with me and one is just of nature. You can see some examples of those pictures in this post. 1/

I had to leave my home when I was a teenager to pursue a career in space sciences. Since then, I've helped create tens of opportunities around the world for young people to get involved in international space and scientific research. 1/

I'm very grateful that there continues to be interest by the media in my research, especially in my recent simulated space mission underwater. I had a very nice interview during the morning news show Telerano, where I shared what living and working underwater for several days in a row was like. 1/

Working with a rock hammer and collecting geological samples is another challenging task to perform during spacewalks. Breaking down lava or just simply trying to take a small sample from a bigger rock is difficult on its own, but with a spacesuit on, it's tricky and physically challenging. 1/

Performing astrobiology research in a spacesuit is one of the hardest things I've ever had to do during a spacewalk. The helmet, backpack (containing our life support systems) and the thick gloves make it challenging to do very precise and contamination-sensitive work. 1/

What will we do if someone gets injured on the Moon or Mars? We need to be prepared for all possible scenarios that can happen during long duration space missions, which is why we simulate medical emergencies during analog lunar and martian missions. 1/

I always try my best to include student projects in my research around the world. I know how hard it is to get into the space sector and to be part of international collaborations, so I'm very happy to help in this way. 1/

The fear of the unknown is something that all of us can face in new environments or when experiencing new things. We may even begin to doubt our abilities when we have to navigate uncertain conditions, no matter how experienced we may be. 1/

Exercising every day for an hour isn't everyone's favorite activity, but it's mandatory for astronauts. On the International Space Station, astronauts exercise for about two hours every day! 1/

How would you fix a problem with your home on Mars? You wouldn't be able to call a technician or go outside without a spacesuit. For the first crewed missions to Mars, astronauts are going to have to rely on each other & the technologies they bring with them to solve the problems they encounter. 1/

My favorite types of spacewalks during simulated space missions are the ones for exploration purposes. That's when I truly feel like I'm on another planet as an astronaut and I'm searching for signs of extraterrestrial life. 1/

Spacewalks are usually the most exciting part of a simulated space mission, but they can also be the most challenging aspect of living away from Earth. It depends on the spacesuits, the terrain and the teamwork between the crewmembers. 1/

When we designed the spacesuits for simulated space missions at HI-SEAS, we worked primarily with these priorities: the health and safety of the crewmembers, practicality, how realistic they were (in terms of missions to the Moon and Mars) and financial constraints. 1/

Modular types of spacesuits for simulated space missions are becoming more popular at research stations around the world. I helped design the blue analog spacesuits you can see in the pictures here, based on my experiences working with a number of different types of spacesuits before. 1/

Full body spacesuits for simulated space missions may be the most similar types of spacesuits to those of Apollo missions or those on the International Space Station. The one in the pictures here was made by the Rhode Island School of Design. 1/

Spacesuits for simulated missions to the Moon and Mars come in many different varieties. They are not the same as the ones astronauts use in space, which can weigh around 310 lb (~140 kg) when fully equipped with life support systems. 1/

The most original method for growing food on Mars that I've tested came from high school students - using hair! Since humans will end up growing a lot of hair during long duration space missions, why not recycle the chopped-off hair? 1/
