iiinova — where your digital self keeps evolving

Still in the early stages of writing this, so no cousin yet. However, Jorryn does have two siblings who come up in the first chapter. From my sci-fi conspiracy story. #WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity

Aster's missing whales begged to differ.

Aster Zubiri was a marine biologist and one of Jorryn's younger siblings. Mikki, the youngest of the three, had recently landed a job with a large corporation in New Leioa, but Aster had been on the south coast for the past three years studying the migratory patterns of the Eridanus spotted whale. It had felt so inconsequential at the time. Who really needed to know about what whales did? But now that they were gone, it suggested they were a lot more important than Jorryn had initially thought.

I don't have fuzzy in my story, but I think we can go with synonyms and vibes. And the vibes here are leaning "hazy/unclear". From my sci-fi conspiracy story that will eventually have a title. #WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity

"Not incorrect, but lacking detail." Abbari leaned back in her seat. "Nereus entered a protracted... well, let's call it what it was, a war between the colonists and the corporations who initially funded the colonization efforts. This followed the discovery of nerephite. It's a bit more politically complex than that, but that will suffice for background."

"So how do genetics, or genopathy, come into play?"

Asteyni 🖤🤍💜 @asteyni.bsky.social · 09/10/2026

I don't have any "raid"s verbatim yet but a few references to attacks and fighting. I decided to go with this snippet that refers to an underground war fought between colonists and their corporate overlords. From my sci-fi conspiracy story. #WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity

"How familiar are you with the Nereus incident?" she asked.

"A little?" Nereus was an out-of-the-way ocean planet that had been colonized by corporate interests hundreds of years ago. It entered the spotlight recently after the discovery of nerephite—an incredibly useful mineral in energy production—and, of course, the inevitable fighting over it that followed. "Civil unrest on a formerly immaterial planet, at least in the galactic-political sense, over starship fuel?" Jorryn offered.

No lizards, snakes, or reptiles... and not even anything described in that way! So I had to go with something else cold-blooded and covered in scales. From my sci-fi conspiracy story. #WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity

His eyes swept the entrance hall to his flat. It was long and vibrant and dim, with a fishtank and flowers on the sideboard to his left. Brightly colored tetras swam up curiously as Rei approached and set down his wallet. The bouquet of flowers had been disturbed, lifted and set back down in a hurry. There were knicks on the top drawer of the sideboard where someone had crudely attempted to force it and given up. Rei unlocked it with his thumbprint and pulled out a pistol.

Compare is definitely close enough. Jorryn is spiraling trying to figure out how feasible this research "opportunity" is. From my sci-fi conspiracy story. #WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity

Certainly, a part of them was intrigued by the challenge, but the research sounded like it would be more frustrating than fruitful and a lot of work either way. There were so many unknowns. Could they get ahold of patient files? Or proprietary mech specifications? They probably needed to do some experiments with unprocessed nerephite and healthy human cells, which felt perilous to say the least. Did those need to be from a Nerusean? Did it matter? Probably. And if data already existed, could they get their hands on it and compare the results? All to investigate a claim Jorryn hadn't even made.

White text on an ombre blue background. There is a blue pencil to the right, with the pencil pointed downward as if to write.

The text reads:

"'If we delay, any element of surprise, any advantage we may have gained will be lost.” She looked between us, her eyes starting to glow to match the fierceness of her gaze. “We have to act now, and act fast.'

'Aye aye, captain,' Dom said, her voice just touched with irony.

Quinn nodded, face serious. 'What’s the plan?'"

No rice, so "food" will have to do. From my sci-fi conspiracy story. #WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity

"I... I need to think about all this more," they said at last. It wasn't a flat out rejection, so Rei didn't abandon all hope, but he did feel it wilting.

"Of course," he said because he had no other choice.

"Thank you for agreeing to meet with me so soon."

"Again, of course. If not for the topic at hand—or, I suppose, in spite of it—it's been a pleasure. How was the food, by the way, doctor? To your liking, I hope?"

Dr. Zubiri blinked a few times. "It was good?"

"You're not sure?" A teasing smile played across his lips.

"I don't know why you're asking," they answered flatly.

"Oh, I think you do," he said, locking his gaze on the doctor's dark eyes until they looked away first.

"You're being incredibly unprofessional."

Rei laughed. "Yes, I am."

I looked at a ton of references for penthouse apartments and even built Rei's flat in House Flipper 2 to figure out how to write this scene. 😅 From my sci-fi conspiracy story. #WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity

The space was maximalist without being too loud about it. His PR company had gone all in on Rei's home planet being a waterworld. The dark stone floor matched the fireplace wall, broken up with dark teal panels, gray wood, and bookcases. A large area rug designated the lounge, a plush gold shag with veins on white running through it. Across from the fireplace was a comfortable brown sofa covered in pillows, and a sea green ottoman sat opposite two overwrought matching chairs. The black, baby grand piano shoved into the corner didn't fit at all, but it blocked egress onto the second balcony, which was perfectly fine by him. It was also covered in plants, a vestige from home when subsurface green spaces had been a necessity for scrubbing the air.

This NDA isn't helping Jorryn's no good, very weird day. From my sci-fi conspiracy story. #WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity

"Before we can get started, I need your print on this." Abbari tapped away at the slate before placing it on the table and sliding it in front of them. Jorryn set down their teacup so they could pick up the slate and read it. "It's a non-disclosure," she added as they began to skim through the carefully worded paragraphs.

"Corporate contract?" they had to ask, even if it didn't seem likely. The letterhead didn't bear any logos or insignias. There were no branded colors anywhere. In fact, it looked more like a plain legal document than anything else. Odd.

"No. You're being requested as an expert witness."

"Excuse me?" Their eyes snapped up to Abbari sitting across from them. "This is a legal matter?"

The text reads:

"There was no satisfying moment of conclusion. No drawing room reveal. No unmasking with the villain wrapped up in their own trap. No “I would have gotten away with it if it weren’t for you meddling kids.”

Just an endless sadness in her eyes as we ripped her domino mask away, and the aching gulf of empathy and misunderstanding. Emotional connection accompanied by logical disagreement."

I don't have petals yet, but floral is close enough! I love Shari's description. Especially her two wedding bands. From my sci-fi conspiracy story. #WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity

"Good morning, Doctor Zubiri!" Shari greeted them far too brightly. She took pride in being the institute's first impression: smiling, unfailingly polite, and always smartly dressed. Today, she wore a black floral dress belted just beneath her bustline, a cropped pink cardigan, and ribbed cotton tights. Her short, red hair was bouncy and voluminous in an effortless, salon-coiffed way, and she wore a wedding band on each of her ring fingers. Compared to Shari, Jorryn was perpetually underdressed: khaki trousers, short-sleeved shirt in green ogee print buttoned all the way up to their throat, and a pair of dark blue paisley tennis shoes. They weren't even certain their socks matched today with their rush to get out the door.

This was a *difficult* one. I don't have any dents, indents, physical impressions, grooves, or anything in my story so far. So I had to go very vibes based with an idiom meaning "not able to make a dent". #WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity

"Does that answer your question, doctor? What's next on your list?"

"I don't really have a list." They definitely looked like they would have preferred one. "I just... I don't know how feasible this all is, to be perfectly honest with you."

His lips quirked into a mirthless smile in response. "You sound a bit like me, at the start of all of this."

"Do I?"

"Not for lack of conviction," he said, "but we're throwing pebbles at spaceships."

"Yes, it does feel a bit... futile," they agreed with a broad handwave.

"One way or another, something is getting done. Peak Zenith is closing its doors and liquidating as we speak. Sometimes enough pebbles, sharpened to points and aimed right at the fuel line, are enough."
