goodreads isn't letting me post my review of we weren't meant to be human so i'm posting it here

This book was such a visceral wild ride I almost don't know what to say about it. This is a book about violence, and it never stops being violent. Even in its kindest moments, with Birdie and Aspen desperately trying to get Crane to leave the hive, we are constantly made aware of all the suffering it took for the two of them to get to a place where they could live happily together... which of course is another reason why Crane can't ruin that by asking them for help. It's like Tammy says. No one leaves the hive because there isn't anything to run TO. The world is a terrible place, and the hive can promise you love. All you need to do is give it flesh. To a desperate person, that's a very good deal. It's very clear cult tactics; we give you a home, and you follow our rules. And if you don't, well, everyone you know is still going to follow, and they won't let you get away.

It's so depressing that despite all of Tammy and Levi's supposed love for Crane, they still play an active role in keeping him under the control of the hive. The only sympathy he gets is from Jess and Stagger, who are victims in their own way to the hive's terrible new rules. As much as things just keep getting worse, it is nice to see Crane and Stagger slowly becoming friends and to have brief moments of comfort together, especially as two nonverbal guys, despite the constant onslaught of pain. Crane is desperately doing what he can to maintain some kind of autonomy in this situation. And maybe it doesn't end the way he wanted, but at least he still chose this. And that's something, right?

Also, never in my LIFE would i have predicted that ending, holy shit
