2024 - The Fall Guy This is a phenomenal tribute to stunt performers and pays that tribute while being *incredibly fucking fun*. Gosling is a treasure and Emily Blunt once again plays a blinder. #filmsky

2023 - Barbie There's no reason for this movie to be any good. And yet it's a fantastic and important piece of filmmaking. #filmsky

2022 - Watcher This moody, atmospheric horror movie follows a young couple moving to Bucharest, arriving just as a spate of mysterious murders haunt their new neighbourhood. If you're a horror fan, it's a must. #filmsky #horrorsky

2021 - Eternals Chloe Zhao took an epic amount of shit for daring to do something different with the superhero genre but this movie will stand the test of time and gets better with each rewatch. #filmsky

2020 - Greenland It makes no sense to me that this movie, starring Gerard Butler, is so good but here we are. It's a disaster movie (always fun) and co-stars the amazing Morena Baccarin who has never gotten the plaudits she deserves. #filmsky

2019 - Uncut Gems As someone who has believed in Adam Sandlers's abilities to deliver a stunning dramatic performance for decades, this movie felt like vindication. If someone put a gun to my head, it wouldn't come close to how tense this film made me feel. #filmsky

2018 - A Quiet Place John Krasinski directs and stars, alongside Emily Blunt (who is fab as always) in this franchise starter sci-fi horror that's become an instant classic. Anyone who saw this in cinemas for the first time will remember that experience for a long time. #filmsky

2017 - Wind River Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen have incredible chemistry as they reunite after Avengers: Age of Ultron, in this tense and incredibly bleak Taylor Sheridan flick. Add it to your watch list now! #filmsky

2016 - Train to Busan The zombie genre has been at risk of getting stale for a long time and yet TtB managed to make it thrilling in a way it hadn't been for a long time. Tense, original and scary! #filmsky

2015 - Green Room A punk rock band witnesses a murder when they accidentally find themselves playing at a neo-nazi gig. Horror on lockdown with the late great Anton Yelchin - gone too soon. #filmsky

2014 - Edge of Tomorrow God dammit, I love a time loop movie. Cruise is fantastic as usual, Emily Blunt is perfect. Easily one of the best sci-fi movies in a decade. #filmsky

2013 - The Purge Home invasion horror with a simple, original premise. Crime is legal for the day; all you have to do is hunker down and get through it. That feels like a prescient premise these days... #filmsky

2012 - The Avengers I'm completely unashamed to say this is my favourite movie. As a comic nerd, this did absolutely everything right for me. I can't count the amount of times I've rewatched and it's brought me joy every single time! #filmsky

2011 - The Cabin in the Woods Before he created the Daredevil series for netflix, Drew Goddard directed this masterpiece, co-written by Joss Whedon, satirising the horror genre while giving it an entry for the ages. An instant, irreverent classic. #filmsky

2010 - Scott Pilgrim vs. The World Based on Bryan Lee O'Malley's Scott Pilgrim comics, this movie is overflowing with style and substance. The cast is spectacular, the comedy hilarious, and the music sets the tone for the whole thing. #filmsky

2009 - Moon Sam Rockwell puts in the performance of a career in this slow, moody film about a lone astronaut waiting to get picked up from his stint on the moon and finally go home. #filmsky

2008 - In Bruges This movie will make you want to go to Belgium just so you can go to Bruges. And you should. It is beautiful! #filmsky

2007 - Stardust Based on Neil Gaiman's incredible fantasy novel, this film is full of standout performances from seasoned vets as well as then-nobodies, now somebodys. Charlie Cox and Henry Cavill before they were superheroes?! Sign me up!

2006 - Deja Vu It's an action movie with Denzel and time travel. Enough said.

2005 - Serenity Cancelled too soon, Joss Whedon's tv show continued on the big screen thanks to a major fan campaign. Serenity is a perfect follow-up and serves as a fitting end. Had it been more commercially successful, it could've gone forever but by this stage it'd already done the impossible.

2004 - Collateral Another Tom Cruise outing, this one directed by Michael Mann. I never much liked Jamie Foxx but he's great in this, and Cruise is absolutely terrifying in the role.

2003 - Oldboy As bleak a revenge film as you could imagine. A masterpiece, as the poster suggests.

2002 - Minority Report Based on the story by Philip K. Dick, and that's already enough of a reason to watch it. Superb sci-fi and an excellent performance from Tom Cruise

2001 - Wet Hot American Summer This ridiculous, outrageous, over the top riff on teen comedies doesn't have nearly the following it deserves. Just look at that cast!

SeanR @astateofpanic.bsky.social · 15/11/2024

2000 - Almost Famous Cameron Crowe's semi-autobiographical film makes me excited to be a musician every time I watch it. It's all happening.

1999 - Office Space No movie is more relatable for anyone who has ever worked in an office. Added bonus of having Gary Cole in the cast.

1998 - The Wedding Singer Set only 13 years in the past, the fashion differences were stark! Sandler delivers a hilarious but earnest film with great performances, a lot of heart and a stellar soundtrack. Also one of Steve Buscemi's finest roles, I'm not even joking, he killed it. #filmsky

1995 - 12 Monkeys There were so many good movies in 1995 but this one is a true original. Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt put in outstanding performances, and the twisty narrative and creepy settings keep you glued to the screen for the duration #filmsky

1994 - Clerks Kevin Smith has had ups and downs in the quality of his films for sure but Clerks, for its clunky direction and overly idiosyncratic dialogue is a superbly simple and original piece of film-making. I've probably seen it... thirty-seven times... #filmsky

1993 - Demolition Man This film has rightly earned its place in history. Futuristic action film where the hero and villain are both fish out of water. There is a charisma overload from start to finish. Don't forget to use the three seashells! #filmsky

1992 - Wayne's World What makes this movie work so well? I dunno man... everything? A silly SNL sketch shouldn't have turned into such an iconic movie for the ages but here we are. Turn up your nose at it if you will but I'm giving you a no hurl guarantee. #Filmsky
