Boom! Really encouraged by types of players Coach DDV is bringing in so far. There are obvious questions about how all will fare at a higher level, but they are archetypes we haven't seen much in recent seasons.

Lamar Wilkerson wanted to be "a priority". Indiana coach Darian DeVries went the extra mile to make sure Wilkerson felt that way about Indiana. In an interview with college basketball website Field Of 68, Wilkerson detailed his decision-making process. www.si.com/college/indi...

What an unfortunate way for Emanuel Sharp's tournament to end. He's been so clutch. Tough way to lose for Houston. Congrats to Florida. The DeVries Era officially begins now.

Yeah, I'm kind of in the same boat. I still enjoy making the occasional joke, but it's more for the lols than an indication of any lingering regret. It didn't work out for Sampson at IU, but he's turned into the coach it always seemed he could be. Now we need to find our own.

Who are you rooting for tonight? I know this is the wrong answer for an IU account to give ... but I think I'll end up pulling for Houston. I've already built the muscle memory rooting for them against Purdue & Duke, and I find their toughness and chemistry pretty easy to root for.

And yes, the foul call on Flagg was a terrible, game-changing call. Also: nobody besides Duke fans give a damn. The Blue Devils will be paying off their debt from all the calls Coach K in the tournament got for a long, long time.

Duke has some great players, but many of them are still boys. Houston has a bunch of men that will either rip your heart out or die trying. And man I really want to describe IU basketball that way again someday.

First thought today upon waking up and reflecting on last night's incredible Duke-Houston game: I love watching Kelvin Sampson’s teams play. It’s not always pretty, but the mental and physical toughness, and chemistry, are absolutely incredible.

Makes the most sense, with his mom’s health situation and the reality that Creighton is just a more stable and reliable situation for a player with his skill set. We’re not rebuilding Rome in one offseason.

Also, there is a non-zero chance that a growing percentage of IU basketball interaction is a Russian bot operation (or a rival school) attempting to sow discord among the fan base in an attempt to keep this sleeping giant of a basketball program in its slumber. Wake us up anyway, Coach DeVries!

I really do think IU is a sleeping giant in football. I’ve been telling my friends and family that for the better part of 2 decades… But it took a person like Cignetti, who combines gumption with results, to put the puzzle pieces together to galvanize the fan base. #iufb

The next 2 weeks offer a useful opportunity for IU to work on itself & make some marginal improvements before B1G play reopens w/ home v RUT and then @ Penn State. All goals for '24-'25 remain attainable. But IU really has to hit the ground running on Jan 2.
130
Assembly Call @assemblycall.com · 16/12/2024
One other important point: IU is supposed to be a B1G title contender. Many of us still think they can be. But JUST improving on D won't get us there. It's the first & biggest step, but this group was supposed to be -- and needs to be -- good on both ends of the court. (7/8)
120
Assembly Call @assemblycall.com · 16/12/2024
Now -- in a world where the NET is used by the Selection Committee, even cosmetic improvements matter. So it's not like the suggestions for O improvements are insignificant. But IU will remain far away from beating actual good teams unless the D gets much better. (6/8)
120
Assembly Call @assemblycall.com · 16/12/2024
Which is why 2 things are frustratingly true at once: • IU is clearly leaving some O efficiency on the table. • But unless the D improves significantly, those O improvements are more likely to just make losses look better than turn them into Ws. (5/8)
130
Assembly Call @assemblycall.com · 16/12/2024
And the biggest impact of the D giving up 89, 89, and 85 points in IU's three most important games is this: The suggestions for offensive improvement likely wouldn't have added enough efficiency to overcome margins of 28, 16, and 17. (4/8)
130
Assembly Call @assemblycall.com · 16/12/2024
Because the biggest issue, obviously, is the D. The eye test & analytics agree on this. And while it can be more challenging for fans to pinpoint specific defensive issues, most can recognize recurring issues w/ guarding yards, communication, help rotations, etc. (3/8)
210
Assembly Call @assemblycall.com · 16/12/2024
There are some simple offensive issues that any average fan or couch coach (🙋) can diagnose: • TOs • Taking (and missing) lots of long 2s • A systemic imbalance between 3s & 2s • Etc. Fixing any or all would lead to marginal O improvement. But would it lead to more Ws? (2/8)

🧵Here is the reality of this #iubb season as we enter the back half of December: When you enter a season w/ B1G title & S16 expectations, but have IU's current resume and analytical profile after 11 games, there are clearly a lot of issues that need fixing. (1/8)

I enjoy doing so, and trying to contextualize it for others who do, to maintain an understand of IU's place in the overall landscape of college hoops as the season unfolds. But if getting bogged down in that lessons your enjoyment, just ignore it until March.

Assembly Call @assemblycall.com · 04/12/2024
That's totally fair. I think everyone should consume the season in the way that brings them the most joy. Seriously. There is absolutely no *need* to look at the data right now.

For the record: the Torvik trend has been less volatile due to differences in the algorithm: opened at 32, rose to 28, dropped to 47, now back at #39. Indiana's NET Rating opened at 72 and is now up to 68.
