it is so hard to sell an expensive high priced book to people and ask them to take a chance on it in like 2 minute interaction and everyone who is doing art as income is struggling rn we don't need to be begrudge people for using fanwork to help their sales along and fill up their tables

gonne be reckless and say I don't even think fanwork is stealing buyers from indie comics in indie spaces, i think that genuinely people just are bad at hooking readers/selling their stories or making stories with broad appeal and well drawn doesn't always mean well written 🏃

for the record doujinshi events do not work like this and as a result there is a doujinshi event almost every weekend in tokyo and everyone who wants to make a doujinshi can make one. isn't that a wonderful concept. accessibility and proliferation

can you imagine if comiket were like *in the 80s* our concept, the doujinshi event, is an original concept that we worked hard on and therefore all other doujinshi events are plagiarizing our work and if you participate in them you are banned from comiket forever

Now that I’m at work most of those reasons are because everyone has a pool of customers instead of a fanbase and every fandom now is a market to protect instead of a community
