Arctic sea ice reached its lowest monthly extent for January, at 6% below average. Antarctic sea ice extent was 5% below average and thus relatively close to average compared to other recent years. Dive into analysis of the #C3S Climate Bulletins: bit.ly/4aQUPM2

Declining Antarctic sea ice cover is generating unprecedented ocean heat loss to the atmosphere and more storms, according to a new study led by NOC. 🧊 Find out how the study provides the first clear picture of the impacts of the disappearing sea ice ➡️ noc.ac.uk/news/declini...

#Antarctic sea ice has been declining unusually fast for the last week or so. Some of this is due to lower concentration ice melting out from last month. Data from @nsidc.bsky.social: nsidc.org/data/g02202/... with the anomalies using a 1981-2010 reference period.
Two polar stereographic maps side-by-side showing Antarctic sea ice concentration and its anomalies relative to 1981-2010 for January 2025. Red shading is shown for less ice, and blue shading is shown for more ice. More areas are below average than above. Antarctica is masked out in grey shading.
