“The weakness of patrimonialism is that as it undermines bureaucracy, it “weakens and eventually cripples” the state. Competent people are replaced by obedient ones dependent on the ruler's support; corruption is accelerated as contractors and civil servants become accustomed to currying favor.”

We're pleased to announce the launch of our Ozonerates website (www.ozonerates.space). The platform is now live and fully equipped with an interactive map browser and data links, allowing users to explore satellite-constrained products such as PO3, sensitivity maps, NO2 and HCHO mixing ratios.

The new political climate has triggered a downward spiral in my career. At my lowest, NASA HQ has accepted my TEMPO science proposal, a mission that I have been eager to be part of for a long time. This chance feels like the universe saying, "Keep going.” I’m leaning into it, scars and all.

Friendly reminder: if you are waiting on something from a US-based scientist/reviewer/editor, please realize that we're barely making it through each day putting out non-stop fires and trying not to collapse into tears. We're trying our best, but things will take longer right now. Give grace.

It's hard to be motivated to talk about science these days, but it might be a good distraction. How well can a GSFC model (a quarter degree) convert NO2 columns to near-surface mixing ratios? We used 77 aircraft spirals at OMI revisit to answer it. It's fine, but there is still room for improvement:

After months of attempts, we parameterized ozone production rates based on measurable compounds by satellites without relying on HCHO/NO2. An L2-regularized DNN makes this isopleth, providing PO3 and the sensitivities for various envs (NOx-sensitive, VOC-sensitive, light-limited, water-limited, ..).

[2/2] The outcomes won't be the same because of the non-linearity so they need to be averaged.

Amir H. Souri @asouri.bsky.social · 13/08/2024
[1/2] Most non-linear model scenarios require at least two pathways. If we want to quantify the contrib of an emitter (A) to say, PM25, using a model, we have two options: i) including everything in the model minus w/o A, and ii) including A only minus the background. t.co/C9cNDueBnr

But, we have large inconsistencies among satellite-based tropospheric ozone retrievals, which prevent us from verifying if the models are capturing TO3 reasonably, especially in the southern hemisphere. This can, by itself, contribute to asymmetric issues in OH between SH/NH. t.co/TXNwvPFMn3

What do you think? Out of HCHO, glyoxal (CHOCHO), and isoprene, HCHO takes the first place at better explaining the reactivity of VOCs during DISCOVER-AQs+KORUS-AQ+INTEX-B+SENEX+ATOMs. This ranking doesn't hold true for specific regions (i.e., high aromatic emiss). t.co/Q2VRWTLBNG

Encouraging to see our ML agrees with Wolfe et al. 2019, suggesting that HCHO and OH are correlated in remote areas where the HCHO photolysis dominates over HCHO+OH. This means if you see higher HCHO levels over oceans, there must have been more OH to oxidize background VOCs. t.co/mFUUz9zsG5
