"Cuomo knows better . . . He rightfully defended the reforms that would prevent people from dying due to incarceration at Rikers Island like bail reform [and] closing the jail complex, so it’s a real shame that he’s straying from what he knows is right." -Alana Sivin of Vera Action

Just weeks before the New York City mayoral election, Andrew Cuomo changed his prior position on closing Rikers Island and now says he wants to keep it open. It's bad politics and bad policy.

"[Mamdani] made safety, quality of life, a core part of his broader message of affordability . . . He very consistently linked safety to affordability by saying that higher costs and rising prices are connected to voters' feelings of being unsafe." -Vera Action program director Alana Sivin

NEW: Results from the New York City mayoral primary race indicate that voters want a serious, solutions-oriented approach to crime and safety. In a city where public safety remains a top concern for voters, "tough on crime" messaging fell flat, according to Vera Action exit polling. 🧵
Pie chart: 75% of New York voters prefer a "serious about safety" approach to crime whereas only 25% prefer a "tough on crime" approach.

I know I’m about to get trolled for this, especially as a Latina and a huge Selena fan, but the celebrations of Yolanda’s parole being denied are really gross. You don’t need to celebrate a system that routinely leaves aging people in prison for decades to honor Selena’s memory. 🤷🏻‍♀️
