An Unholy Savior by Ash White

Tonight was the night Annabel would escape. She had been trapped in this manor for over a month, and the full moon was tomorrow. If she didn't leave now, the residents of the manor would make certain to sacrifice her. The wind howled past Annabel as she peered out the tiny window of her third story room and into the night. Her rope of bedsheets and scrap cloth swung down below, stretching to reach the moist earth. It wasn't perfect, but it hung low enough for her to descend without breaking a leg.
"I do believe it's improper for young ladies to be climbing out of
windows late at night, is it not?" A voice behind her remarked.
Annabel jumped away from the window, her heart hammering against her chest. She had never heard the door open. She scanned the dark room for the source of the voice. Had her captors caught on to her plan? She inched over to a small table by the window, fingers curling around the cold metal of the unlit candelabra that sat upon it. "Show yourself!"
"No need to be afraid." The source of the voice stepped out of the shadows and into the pale moonlight, hands held up in a placating gesture. Annabel gasped.
"You-You're covered in blood!" She was horrified to notice it not only covered his priestly attire but poured from his mouth and dripped from his hands. She swung the candelabra in front of her to ward off the man. "Don't come any closer!"
"My, would you look at that?" The older gentleman examined
himself in surprise. "Rest assured, it's not my blood."
"What does it matter who's blood it is?" Annabel screeched, gripping her makeshift weapon tighter. She had all the cultists' twisted faces seared into her memory; this man was not one of

them. Such knowledge provided no relief. At least she knew what the cult was capable of. "You're a monster!"
The priest - though, she was doubtful of his legitimacy as such - sighed. "Monster I very well may be, but tonight I am your savior and have slain the very monsters that took you."
The candelabra tumbled to the wooden floor with a hard thump. "Truly?" Annabel had thought no one would save her from this nightmare, that she was forgotten. There had been hope, at first. But with each night that passed, that hope dimmed.
"I am an old friend of your mother's; she sent me to find you. I
apologize that it took me so long."
Annabel fell to her knees, relief flooding her. "Who are you?" She whispered. "I have never seen you before, and certainly have never heard of my mother knowing someone so terrifying."
"Who I am is of no concern, simply know that I am someone who appears when it matters." He strode forward, closing the gap between them, and held out a hand. "Now, I believe it is time to leave."
Annabel hesitantly slipped her hand into that bloodied one. Her savior helped her up and turned for the door. The candelabra glinted from the spot it'd been dropped. She quickly scooped it up and hid it by her side. Annabel let the weight comfort her as she smiled at her unholy savior, ready to face whatever came next.

My whole wip takes place in fall for maximum ✨vibes✨
