"would've". They choose not to act and I'm not claiming otherwise

I mean there's a pretty clear chain of cause and effect there. The killing didn't happen in a vacuum, it was targeted at him for a reason. I don't think we should glorify it but acting like UHC's practices were not a major contributing factor to Luigi choosing to do it is just straight up untrue

Like as a prison abolitionist I do not think the consequences the state would've applied to him would be particularly useful, but that's not the conversation we're having here, which is instead about "should we give this guy a public platform or not"

People completely unable to comprehend that "legal/criminal consequences" exist in an area completely separate from "social/interpersonal consequences" and that, due to a combination of time and state inaction we are exclusively dealing with the later here

If this is about the one I'm thinking of I do at very, *very* slightly get it, as someone who first saw this when it was still at the "single screenshot of a post from a twitter rando" stage but like it very quickly got confirmed beyond that why are people still trying those arguments

-your pitch with "yeah you won't be able to have free time until you've got at least 5 years of seniority and aren't on call 24/7". I'm sure it's great for getting people on board initially but it definitely hurts them in the long term

Tbh I don't think it's good for *any* industry, just something that's ossified and is now taken as a given. I remember attending a railroad recruiting thing and they were talking about how they had a driver shortage and the whole time I was thinking "maybe it would help if you didnt have to start-

For a more recent example, the russians started massing forces near the border a full year before they actually started the invasion. Large scale military operations take time even when the material capacity to engage in them already exists, which china is still building towards w/ regards to Taiwan

AshR @ashr202.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Especially with regards to ships, which in all but the most exceptional circumstances are extremely long lead time items

AshR @ashr202.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
There's a pretty big difference between "building the capability to invade in the future" and "preparing to actually do the thing". The allies were building up to D-day basically as soon as france fell but actual preparations didn't start until 1943, for an example

Symbolic as in they were targeting symbols

AshR @ashr202.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
Tbf by the largely symbolic logic they were using to pick their targets it wouldn't have been all that out of place

This is why early chatgpt was so bad at math, btw. All it really knows is that x + y needs to equal z, but it doesn't know that 2+2=4, it just recognizes that it's an equation and that it needs to output a number. They fixed this by making it fed inputs into a calculator if it detects an equation
030
AshR @ashr202.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
Like they don't "knowingly"do anything. They take in an input and, based on their training data and, output something that looks like(but isn't necessary)a correct answer. It doesn't know that it fucked up and then promised to not do it again unless you specifically feed that into your future inputs

Though the very first carriers were cruiser conversions so those would've necessarily been smaller
000
AshR @ashr202.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
Not sure when the battleships got overtaken by the carriers. My gut is that the earliest ones were probably smaller than an iowa but bigger than their contemporary battleships

AshR @ashr202.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
Tbf the nimitzs are also much newer but this is also true of the late/immediately post war carriers (though this is from after midway had the angled flight deck added, she wasn't built with it).

I looked it up and jesus like 75% of jr central's revenue came from the shinkansen, though iirc they're the ones with the most important shinkansen and the least conventional services (they're just the only one I could easily find the shinkansen figures seperated out from everything else)
A screenshot taken from JR Central's financial statemnts, showing pie charts of revenue sources. "Transport" represents 81% of operating revenue, with the tokaido shinkansen representing 93% of transportation revenues

I mean there's japan but like. They're pretty unique and their secret weapon is that their railroads are actually real estate companies that also run trains (and also the shinkansens being money printers)

for a battleship but it's still a very important part of the ship's history, the last time it was in active service. They do have a few areas done up as they would've been for wwii but it's still mostly 80s.
000
AshR @ashr202.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
Very different context obviously, but I used to watch a lot of the Battleship New Jersey YouTube channel and they talked about this constantly and I always found it fascinating. They've got most of the ship restored to the 80s, which is really neat because it's definitely not the period you'd expect

There's a reason that was the only plan. The only thing an actual plan would've done here is made our performance slightly less embarrassing, we'd still be losing

Really I'd expect this to be more of an issue in the other direction, though as I understand it not knowing how to do the R sound right is the kind of thing that marks you as a foreigner rather than something that makes you hard to understand
000
AshR @ashr202.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
And like I've seen other people mention, it's (usually) much more of a D sound than an L sound so R/L being the mix-up doesn't really make that much sense to me

That said. Uh. No a Japanese person probably wouldn't have a problem with it? Like at this point most Japanese people will have had at least some amount of english education and even without that the japanese R is still entirely intelligible to an English speaker
110
AshR @ashr202.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
They have an R but it's (by english standards) a very weird one. There's like 2 other letters you could reasonably transcribe it as R is just the one we settled on.

Like there's a reason we're harping on him the hardest, because most of the transphobic dems have always been at best wishy washy on this. Talarico spent the primary being pretty strong on this issue only to abandon us as soon as he made it to the general

I grew up in an extremely car dependent texan suburb which had two fully paved and separated bike paths. One was very much got recreational uses and while it was far more busy the other one got decent traffic too (and would've gotten more if it actually connected to anything or was clearly signed)

When we talk about bike infrastructure in the U.S. you'll often hear from suburban and rural folks that, "No one bikes here!" because they don't consider nondrivers. People will bike (or roll) if you give them safe, accessible infrastructure. Many super wide roads in the U.S. could accomodate this.

it's so fun how trans people can keep saying over and over and over and OVER again how the catholic church's ban on trans healthcare is one of the most sweeping and draconian and every day liberals & leftist just ignore it to gush about whatever meaningless "progressive" gesture the pope made today

The lower courts have been mostly pretty decent, with a few notable exceptions. The problem is, as shown here, that they are all beholden to decisions of the fascist supreme court

I mean I feel like a big part of it is that most of this is in single pieces or short comics, and that's just not enough time to do something interesting in that space, whereas with early transition you can get a lot more value out of fewer drawings.
