Another fantastic recent case study of this exact thing is the newer Velma show - it did VERY poorly with audiences, but got a S2 and a Halloween special. Everyone was complaining about it getting a S2... but what most people didn't know is that S2 was finished by the time S1 even aired. (5/?)

BUT if the show DOES do very well.... they have a whole entire S2 on the backlog while they order S3/4 and get that ball rolling. This allows for a pretty seamless release schedule, where the wait between S2 and S3 would be pretty minimal and the company can ride the high of a good S1 release. (4/?)

-do this by ordering batches. The way they do this is by internally ordering, lets say, a 20 episode "season 1" internally, and then releasing it as S1 and S2 at 10 eps each. If a show does poorly in S1, there's no reason not to release S2, but they wont renew it for more after that. (3/?)

- so it makes some amount of sense to have your next season nearing the end of its production cycle after the first is airing. But, it is also to skirt union (TAG/IATSE 839) agreements about wage increases on seasonal renewals. Even the long standing shows do this like Simpsons and Family guy- (2/?)

Hi I'm one of them "animators" Tyler's talking abt and can speak to this. If a show announces a second season close to the release of a first season, it almost always has already been ordered and is nearing the end of production cycle. Animation takes a LONG time to make (years!) even in TV- (1/?)

My hope is that at least it gives people some time to come up with an alternative that can ingest Flash files in a more graceful way. I know Harmony has some import scripts, but they are not very good. It'd be a GREAT time for someone to make a Flash clone that can read that mess.

swapping programs is like swapping from oil paint to watercolor.... and if you have a full supply of oils, a team who specializes in oils, and a client that is expecting oil paintings in a few months.. we cant just be reprogrammed! it takes time to make new workflows, muscle memory and nuances

Also everyone suggesting software like Procreate Dreams, Toonsquid, or Calipeg… These are iPad only. There are extreme limitations to what they can do, especially when u consider that Flash is desktop software with lots of support. For those suggesting piracy, that’s not the point. Grow up.

The one downfall of ALL of these ipad based softwares is that none of them work in vector…. which, is really the kicker and the thing that makes none of them professionally viable. But as far as usability, I really love Calipeg. Built by animators for animators for sure.

Dreams aint anywhere NEAR a competent software even with its more recent updates. Calipeg is a much better ipad based animation software (and exports to Harmony). Toonsquid is often recommended too tho ive never personally worked in it.

People love to hate Animate, but it's capable of doing things faster and cheaper than just about any other software out there. Harmony is a much more powerful program, but for basic tasks you use a hammer, and Animate was that hammer. As we know, Adobe hates its customers.

Oh, if it helps, species names... Lil Mans is a v. tristis orientalis (Freckled Monitor, subspecies of v. tristis tristis the Blackheaded Monitor) Pesto is a phelsuma lineata (Lined Day Gecko), but she's on the dull green side and doesn't exhibit any of the red or blue colors.

This is extremely tragic but I feel the need to add that the San Gabriel Mountains' scenic roads are SO outrageously dangerous. You have to be extremely careful driving up them. The cliffs are so steep, and they're not that well guarded. Please don't make the same mistakes if you're ever up there :(

It’s wild because I definitely think Harmony 25 is an absolute winner - it introduced some features that I’m so excited about I’m sad my workplace isn’t using it yet. But they did say p explicitly that once you move into 25 files have to stay there… which… isn’t great, yeah.

If you’re looking for a Cintiq you could always hit up some art schools in the area and see if they’re offloading equipment! They’ll often sell at a heavily discounted rate. Otherwise the old 22HDs are absolute workhorses if you can get your hands on one. Mines still going and its 10 years old.
