"They say they have the fidgets" is a line that will stay with me for the rest of my life. I found these back when I was researching how to tailor Charlotte's language around her ADHD for The Potent Solution, it highlights to me that my experiences are real, not some byproduct of modern life.

People walking up and down the room, a slight noise in the same, the mowing stable, the shutting a door suddenly, a slight excess of heat or of cold, too much light or too little light, all destroy constant attention in such patients, inasmuch as it is easily is exited by every impression.

The barking of dogs, an ill-tuned organ, the scolding of women, are sufficient to distract patients of this description to such a degree, as almost approaches to the nature of delirium. It gives them vertigo, and headach(sic), and often excites such a degree of anger as borders on insanity.

When people are affected in this manner, which they very frequently are, they have a particular name for the state of their n serve, which is expressive enough of their feelings. They say they have the fidgets.

And then the back area, where the staff changing room and the office is. One thing I realised when making this from floor plans of the restaurant from the show, is that customers have to go through the staff changing area to get to the toilet, which doesn't seem like a good layout at all.

And here's some examples of the type of the type of science we can do with this information. Firstly, we can show that bars in galaxies are noticably redder than their disks. Second we have a galaxy with IFU spectra, and we can see how the emission from star forming regions lines up with the arms.

The model works for a very wide range of disk galaxy morphologies, from strongly barred galaxies to grand spirals and even ring galaxies.

Galaxies and their segmentation maps, predicted by ZB:3D. For each galaxy we show the DESI RGB image, followed by the a visualisation of the segmentation maps, with the spiral arms in purple and the bars in red. Galaxies are divided into groups based on the probability that the galaxy does not contain a bar, as predicted by GZ: DESI. Each subplot title indicates the range of bar probabilities, and the galaxies are chosen at random from that range.

We used citizen science labels from Galaxy Zoo 3D (www.zooniverse.org/projects/klm...) and updated imaging from DESI to train a NN to detect spiral arms and bars in ~600k disk galaxies. This is almost 100x more objects than in the training sample, and will be easily updated to larger datasets.

Comparisons of GZ:3D volunteer pixel masks and the output from the segmentation model for a galaxy. In the first column we show the DESI image of the galaxy—a barred spiral galaxy with two spiral arms. In the second column we show the GZ:3D volunteer classifications, with the spiral arm masks in purple and the bar masks in red–the pixel intensity denotes the number of volunteers who enclosed the pixel in their mask. The third column displays the output of the segmentation model, with the same colour scheme–here the pixel intensity denotes the confidence of the model that a pixel belongs in the segmentation map. There is good agreement between the human labelled image and the machine generated image, and the labelled regions match up with the optical image of the galaxy as well.
