From the opening scene of "Good Bones" a murder mystery set in he south end of the Puget Sound, Washington. Dr Anna Jones and LCDR Brooke Morningstar were married in Canada in 2007 when Anna was 20 weeks pregnant with their IVF-conceived child, Riley.
AI-generated image depicting the owners’ suite of the Mill House Bed & Breakfast on Eld Island, Washington. Brooke Morningstar stands in a white U.S. Navy officer’s Dress White uniform with ribbons and insignia, carrying a black case and holding a cane, while her wife Anna smiles at her from beside the bed. A large text panel reproduces their playful exchange about Anna’s love of seeing Brooke in uniform. The warmly furnished room overlooks the water and evergreen-covered shoreline, with decorative coastal and lighthouse motifs framing the scene.
At the left side of the image is a body of text that reads:
MILL HOUSE BED & BREAKFAST
Owner's Suite * Eld Island, Washington

Brooke had donned her Dress Whites, strapped on her sword, adjusted her cover, made certain her medals were properly aligned, picked up the package on the bureau, and, tucking it into a satchel beneath her arm, paused a moment before grasping the cane she rarely needed these days, thinking that with all of the standing and walking she would likely be in need of it sooner rather than later, then headed downstairs to join her waiting wife.

"Damn, Lieutenant Commander Morningstar! I do love a woman in uniform!" her wife greeted her as she came into view.

Slightly blushing, Brooke smiled at Anna and replied, "Yeah, I know, it was the uniform that attracted you in the first place. Except that was a librarian uniform, and you didn't know I was a veteran yet. Let's go. I don't know how long I can stand to be in this thing before I start to rip it off, and that would scandalize the Yacht Club bunch."

"Mmm, do tell. But I may hold you to that later. Are we taking the bus, or just walking, since it's only a few blocks?"

Screenshot of a Truth Social post by President Donald J. Trump. Trump’s post reads, “So beautiful! D.C. is better than ever. Tender, loving care! President DJT.” The accompanying image shows the gilded Sacrifice sculpture at the Arlington Memorial Bridge in Washington, D.C., against a cloudy blue sky. The original graphic places the words “Only Trump” in large white Gothic lettering above the sculpture, surrounded by a circle of dark stars. The image has been edited to add, in matching white Gothic lettering across the bottom: “Can Commit Treason and Remain in Office.”

41k words into the rebuild. Prologue, Epilogue, & first 3 chapters complete. Sadly, those are the easy ones. Not much changed from the early versions of those. No one to blame but myself… well, & Loki. It’s always Loki’s fault. Just ask Thor. He’ll confirm. 🤭 Hush, Loki. You know I love you. 1/2

Seriously panicking. Somehow the final version of the novel that needs to go to Ingram by next week is missing. I am terrified that during the recent two weeks of insomnia and mental fog that in cleaning up the working and draft files I have deleted everything. #Unseen #booksky 1/2

Tell me, #booksky - this isn't a sign that I have a book problem, is it? That isn't a ral thing, is it? Someone told me I have "too many books". I think they are the one with a problem. A literacy problem. Should I send them a reading 🌈?

Text:

The Woman in the Garden

Riley wasn’t sure when she’d started walking.

One moment, she was in the house—the same house she had lived in her whole life. The next, she was outside, in the garden, the late afternoon sun casting long shadows over the stone pathways.

Something about it felt different, but not unfamiliar.

And then she saw her.

A woman, young, seated on the stone bench near the apricot sapling, dark hair pulled back, hands folded loosely in her lap. There was an ease in the way she sat—like she had always belonged there, like this was her place before Riley had ever known it.

A little girl sat beside her, legs swinging, eyes bright.

Riley frowned.

She recognized the little girl first.

She was Mémère. Her grandmother. But not as Riley had ever known her—this wasn’t the Mémère who braided Riley’s hair and made honey cake on special occasions. This was Mémère at seven years old—almost the same age Riley was now. The one she had only ever seen in old photographs in albums that Mama would show her at special times.

Riley’s pulse picked up, confusion settling in as she stared at her, at the woman beside her, at the house behind them, standing exactly as it always had, but somehow… different.

The woman turned toward her, smiling softly, like she had been expecting her all along.

"You may call me Anastazja," she said.

Riley blinked, uncertain. "... Anastazja?" she echoed.

The woman—Anastazja—nodded, folding her hands in her lap. "It means life," she murmured.

And somehow, Riley knew she wasn’t wrong.

But who was she? More importantly, why did Riley feel like she already knew the answer?

#AprilWorldbuilders #WritingCommunity Day 27 From "Unseen", Part one of "The Dream that Carried Us" (forthcoming).
@AprilWorldBuilders hosted by Kira of the Wind (writing prompts)Text: First Woman (softly): "You’re one of us now. Stay quiet. Stay hidden. We will protect you."
The girl’s wide, haunted eyes blinked once in understanding.
Outside, the Romani camp burned, flames licking the sky.
Above the smoke, the waxing gibbous moon rose at 9:29 pm, indifferent and cold, casting a ghostly silver sheen over the camp.
Inside, in the terrible silence that followed, a child lived.

October 8, 1944 – The Day After
The smoke lingered longer than anyone expected.
By the time the sirens stopped, the yard had emptied. All day, the barracks remained locked down. No work detail. No soup. No roll call. Just silence and smoke, and the gnawing ache of knowing something irreversible had happened.
The women in Block 15 sat still, their movements small and cautious. No one wept. Not openly. Grief was too dangerous. But Anastazja could see it settle into the corners of the room—behind Rachel’s clenched jaw, in the way Rivka twisted the ends of her kerchief until the fabric frayed.
“What did they think would come of it?” Leah muttered under her breath. “It’s madness. Brave, maybe. But madness all the same.”
“They knew,” Miriam said, her voice nearly inaudible. “They knew they wouldn’t survive.”
“But still,” Rivka whispered. “They did it.”
She looked toward the sky, though the view was only slats and gray. “They fought back. They made the ground burn.”
No one spoke for a long time.

While I have much more to say related to this topic (which was the subject of my aforementioned multi-part post that was lost), for now, I’ll share my own Prayer of Remembrance, based upon the original by Rabbis Jonathan Wittenberg and Lionel Blue. Apologies for the font color I forgot to change it.

El Malei Rachamim
Prayer for the Victims of the Holocaust
Based on the original by Rabbis Jonathan Wittenberg and Lionel Blue
Compassionate Presence,
dwelling beyond and within all worlds,
grant perfect rest beneath the sheltering wings of eternity
to the souls of the millions
who were murdered and silenced—
Jews, Roma, the disabled, the queer,
and all those deemed “undesirable” by hatred—
in the Shoah, the Holocaust.
May they be held in tenderness,
in the embrace of the Eternal Mystery,
the One who remembers even when we forget,
who weeps for every life stolen.
Source of Mercy,
bring healing to the generations that follow.
Let memory become a flame of justice
and a light against the darkness.
May their lives not be lost in vain,
but call us always
to compassion, vigilance, and peace.
Let their souls be bound up
in the bond of life everlasting.
May they rest in dignity and rise in glory.
Let memory be our defiance.
Na bister.
Blessed be the queer dead.
