I talked with Ash-Lee Woodard Henderson about how our communities can defend the voting process this November. Some folks reached out and asked me if I could make an episode about this subject because they were tired of simply being told to vote harder and wanted to know what more we could do. ❤️

This post really pissed me off. As someone who has been an activist for forty years and training activists, organizers and non-profit leaders for 15 years, one of the most relevant factors for continued engagement is whether people enjoy the work, feel like they belong, and find community in it.

4. When does my county certify, and can the board refuse? 5. Who do I call if something goes wrong? For Georgia: counties certify Nov. 9 at 5 p.m.; the state certifies Nov. 20. Tennessee counties certify by Nov. 23. Congress is seated Jan. 3, 2027.

Five questions to get answered in writing from your county before November: 1. Can my organization credential poll watchers, or only a party? 2. Can I hand out food and water in line, and how far from the door? 3. Where do the ballots go when the polls close, and can I watch?

Before Election Day: work the polls. On Election Day: drivers, childcare, food, de-escalators, & 866-OUR-VOTE at the ready. After polls close: a person at every handoff in the chain of custody. Until the seat's filled: be in the room when the county certifies, & on Jan. 3 when Congress is sworn in.

So, the turnout program is the first line of election protection, and the election protection program is what keeps the vote from being stolen. We need both. Anybody who tells you we get to choose is asking you to lose slowly.

Ash-Lee Woodard Henderson @ashdashlee.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
But think about what proof actually is. A recount can move a few hundred votes. A challenge can throw out a few thousand. None of them can move a landslide. The cheapest proof there is, the kind no judge has to rule on and no board can refuse, is a margin too big to argue with.
162
Ash-Lee Woodard Henderson @ashdashlee.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
Some of the smartest people I organize with say the prove-and-enforce work now matters more than turnout. They're right about half of it. For years, turnout had a budget line, and chain of custody didn't. That assumption is gone.

Ash-Lee Woodard Henderson @ashdashlee.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
Three in ten of us voted by mail in 2024. The president voted by mail himself in Florida this year. None of this is about fraud. It's about making enough noise before the election that regular people give up, and about making the count itself something we can be made to argue about.

Ash-Lee Woodard Henderson @ashdashlee.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
Let me be clear about my take on what's happening. The far right is in the early stages of a full-blown coup while screaming that there is an election security crisis, a crisis they will not admit they are creating.

As @ashdashlee.bsky.social has recently shown (in a piece now also published in the great @convergencemag.com), the Battleground Map is a too short-term + myopic a lens through which to prioritize electoral base-building. The Left's plans must include MAKING turf flippable. bsky.app/profile/conv...

And Friday, a class-action lawsuit was filed against NIPSCO, saying the outages could have been prevented if the company had maintained the trees around its own lines. Tuesday is the company’s own deadline for Gary. And still no investigation opened, that I’ve been able to see.

Folks are paying $25 to $70 a day in generator gas to keep food cold & phones charged. The Mayor of Gary said it plainly this week: “Communities of color are left behind and always feel like they’re the last to get turned on or the last to get rescued in these situations.”

Hey good people, Saturday update, from what I could source as of August 22nd: Approximately 20,807 Gary residents are still in the dark. Nearly half of everyone still without power in the region.

Keep giving to groups on the ground that are supporting our neighbors and loved ones in Indiana.

If it's on management, prove it. Open the inquiry. Compel the crew deployments. Get the damage counts. See where the grid money went.

Ash-Lee Woodard Henderson @ashdashlee.bsky.social · 21/08/2026
Even Governor Braun said it's unacceptable and on NIPSCO management (or lack thereof, I'd argue). He appointed four of the five commissioners on the body with the power to investigate NIPSCO, and no investigation has been opened that I've been able to see.
120
Ash-Lee Woodard Henderson @ashdashlee.bsky.social · 21/08/2026
This isn't a claim that nothing's moving. But it is too slow and we have folks in our beloved community that are still in the dark in the Blackest city who seems to be waiting the longest, again, and nobody outside NIPSCO can check why, because the numbers are confidential...

Ash-Lee Woodard Henderson @ashdashlee.bsky.social · 21/08/2026
The dates for the region's Black and brown cities appeared only after the deadline collapsed and people like us started asking why...loudly. It's infuriating to have to ask that question and let's sit with what it says that we find ourselves in a situation where we'd have to ask...

Ash-Lee Woodard Henderson @ashdashlee.bsky.social · 21/08/2026
When I posted last, Gary, Hammond, & East Chicago weren't on the schedule at all (I archived their page, so there's receipts on this). 32 other communities had dates.

Ash-Lee Woodard Henderson @ashdashlee.bsky.social · 21/08/2026
NIPSCO promised everyone would have power back today post the severe storms in Indiana. As of this morning, their own website schedules East Chicago tonight, Hammond tomorrow, Munster Monday, & Gary on Tuesday, 8/25. Last on the list, alongside Portage. 4 days past the day they promised everyone.
163
Ash-Lee Woodard Henderson @ashdashlee.bsky.social · 21/08/2026
A real storm-response investigation wouldn't just be for Gary. It'd set the standard for every utility in the state. The same system that leaves the Blackest city waiting longest is the one gouging everybody. Transparency is the whole fight.
010
Ash-Lee Woodard Henderson @ashdashlee.bsky.social · 21/08/2026
This is the point exactly. Different utility, same state, same story: high bills, slow trucks, no way to check where the money goes. It seems like NIPSCO customers pay the highest residential electric rate in Indiana, and the regulator finally opened an affordability inquiry this spring.

There outta be an Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission storm investigation. We want to know how many crew deployments happened, in which communities, damage counts by community, & where the grid money actually went. They did this very thing after storms in 2023, so there's precedent.
