2's gonna make people angry but you're 100% right... not only has the cost per employee risen dramatically over the past 3 decades but the number of employees needed to make the modern AAA game has ballooned over that period. You can't expect games to cost 60 bucks forever

Allegedly Lightfall was supposed to be the end of the L&D saga (which The Final Shape ended up being) but story development wasn't where it needed to be so Lightfall was developed as an interim step. So a narrative cul de sac is a pretty apt description lol

It's less because of the whiny babies and more because up until the past half decade video games were a growing market and companies could offset the production cost by selling more units, but the market is saturated at this point and games are still getting more expensive to make
