It's not a circle, silly. It's an oval.

I hate when I listen to a song by a band I don't know and it has a really nice hook, and I'm like "wow, these guys have potential" and then it turns out the hook was the outlier and not potential

And seeing the world as it is can be quite uncomfortable, but that's no reason bury your head in the sand, but a reminder that it takes some courage.

I'm sympathetic to the view that it's an attempt to shift more of the tax burden away from the rich / corporations to the average person, as it's the end consumer who will ultimately be hit

Becaues it's so stupid, that even when a man who is notorious for saying stupid things and the following through on it says it, they struggle to believe it.

It's the politics version of /r/wallstreetbets - you don't cut your losses, you double down. An unfortunate but not uncommon human trait.

I wonder how many people who get their news from Fox are genuinely clueless, and how many just listen because Fox says things that they like. If you live in a world that feels like it's going to shit, I guess it's nicer to read that someone is fixing it rather than read that it's getting shittier.

Trump's rapid fire of EOs is a clear indication that we've left a rules based order and entered a vibes based order. It's all about how it makes people feel, logic, rules and reality is for suckers.

As someone who listen to Brett before COVID and their podcast completely broke their brain, someone needs to conduct a case study on their decent into madness.

Complete luxury problem, but I often spend so much time agonizing over whether something is worth the price, that I end up wasting hours doing nothing and going over it, and it probably would’ve been more worthwhile to spend the money and quickly realize that it wasn’t worth it.

You got years of experience working in different institution, what have you seen work? Calling people racist and sexist etc doesn't seem effective. I'm guessing it's similar to raising a child, say not and don't isn't very effective, instead you need to guide them to discover the correct behaviour.

Yep, give details and do it respectfully. Didn't like a book because of too much dialogue? Cool, I like dialogue so I might check it out. Taste is personal and what people don't like can be as informative as what people do like.

Feels a bit ironic to make this statement in place that's definitely stealing a lot attention. Anyway, I bought a timed phone lockbox the other day. Admitting that my own willpower isn't enough to overpower the algorithms.

In a world where attention has become the most valued commodity, anything that draws attention while be highly sought after, but the value of people’s attention is tethered to the ability to utilize it, whether through propaganda or advertising, so it will always be under attack.

Not all questions are scientific questions. But if you want to use scientific studies to bolster your position, make sure you represent them correctly. Using weak or misrepresented scientific evidence to argue a non-scientific point isn't just dishonest, it's also unnecessary.

Lol, just got blocked by @bcuban.bsky.social because I replied that this study is not good evidence that reading and listening to audio books is the same. The study presents words one by one at the same speed as the audio, not normal reading. www.jneurosci.org/content/39/3...

This study presents words one by one to the reader, at the same speed it took the audio presnt them. This is not a good comparison to actual reading. It focuses on the semantic processing of individual words, and isn't at all a study on reading vs listening to audio books.

Andreas Sandgren @asandgren.bsky.social · 19/01/2025
That's not what that study says. Highly correlated is not exactly the same. Secondly, it says semantic processing is the same. It also doesn't test a normal reading experience. It is presenting indvidual words, one by one to match exactly the amount of time it took to present the word with audio.

If you're generally unhappy with your life, a commute is a could be a great way to disconnect. That's not a very good argument for longer commutes, but it is one.

I agree, and we can all argue why it looks like this based on Trump's awfulness. With that being said, attacking Trump's administration for their inability to attract celebrity endorsement isn't really a show of strength.

Despite their flaws, most people have a positive experience with Valve/Steam. Considering what the general consumer experience is like, that buys a lot of good will.

As long has the internet allows for content creation without accountability, there will always be low-effort terrible content. As long as that's profitable, there will be a lot of it.
