昨日は実験材料のクラゲの野生個体を探すため、調査船を用いたプランクトン採集が行われました。目的としていたクラゲは採集できませんでしたが、持ち帰ったサンプルにはバラエティ豊かなプランクトンがたくさん含まれていました！ Yesterday, plankton sampling was conducted using our center's research vessel. The target jellyfish was not found, but the sample was full of diverse plankton!

センターで飼育しているハスノハカシパンの幼生が稚ウニに変態しました。受精から20日ほどで稚ウニになったようです。 The larvae of the sand dollars (Scaphechinus mirabilis) being reared at our center have metamorphosed into juvenile sea urchins. It appears they became juvenile sea urchins about 20 days after fertilization.

先日はセンターから大変きれいな夕焼けを眺めることができました。朝夕は肌寒く、日も短くなってくると秋の訪れを実感させられます。 I enjoyed a beautiful sunset from the Asamushi Research Center the other day. As the days get shorter and the mornings and evenings become cool, it makes us feel the arrival of autumn.

先日見かけたスナヒトデです。砂泥底には見事に移動の痕跡が残されていました。 A starfish (Luidia quinaria) spotted in the water near Hadakajima the other day. You could clearly see the traces left behind as it moved across the sandy-mud bottom.

センター周辺の砂泥底で観察されたエボヤです。わずかに露出した礫に老成した立派な3個体が付着していました。 The photo shows ascidians (Styela clava) observed on the sandy-mud bottom around the Asamushi Research Center. Three well-developed, aged individuals were attached to a slightly exposed pebble.

現在センターで飼育しているハスノハカシパンの幼生です。受精後1週間ほどで8腕プルテウス幼生まで成長しています。 Here are the larvae of the sand dollar (Scaphechinus mirabilis) being maintained at the Asamushi Research Center. They developed into 8-arm pluteus larvae in approximately one week.

当センターで飼育しているキタサンショウウニです。興味深いことにクワの葉をよく食べ、与えると徐々に集まり摂餌を開始する様子が観察されます。 The photo shows sea urchins (Temnopleurus hardwickii) kept in the seawater tank at our center. Interestingly enough, they seem to like mulberry leaves—when we feed them the leaves, they gradually gather around and start eating.

センター周辺の砂地でよくみられるツメタガイです。大きな軟体部を持っていますが、砂を払うなど、ちょっとした刺激を与えるとすぐに殻に引っ込んでひっくり返ってしまいます。 A moon snail found on sandy bottom near the Asamushi Research Center. When disturbed, such as by brushing off sand, this large-bodied snail rapidly retreats into its shell and rolls onto its back.

画像は砂底に隠れるガザミです。近づくと鉗脚を振りかざして威嚇してきます。とても美味しいカニですが、はさむ力が強いためフィールドワークの際には注意が必要です。 Here is a swimming crab partially buried in the sand. Should you approach, it me aggressive raise its chelipeds in a threat display. It boasts a powerful pinch, so take care when doing fieldwork!

今後の発生学の実習で用いるハスノハカシパンの採集が行われました。センターに持ち帰り、早速確認してみたところ、無事に放精放卵を確認することができました。 Sand dollars were collected for use in an upcoming embryology course. After they were brought back to the laboratory, successful spawning and sperm release were confirmed.

本日は調査船を用いた海洋観測が行われました。海の透明度は抜群に良く20 mほどの深さまで観測機器を視認することができました！ Today, we conducted oceanographic monitoring using our research vessel! The water was so clear that we could see the observation equipment from the boat down to a depth of about 20 meters.

先日夏泊半島大島で観察されたハマナスです。青森県の沿岸を代表する植物の1種で白い花と真っ赤な実が美しく印象的でした。 Beach roses seen on Oshima Island in the Natsudomari Peninsula recently—one of Aomori's iconic coastal plants. The plant shown here stood out with its white flowers and striking red rose hips.

先週末は実習の一環として、海岸植物に関するフィールドワークが行われました。山地と海浜で近い仲間の形態を比較し、海岸環境への植物の適応について検討しました。 As a part of a biology course, fieldwork on coastal plants was held last weekend. Students compared the morphology of related species in forest and coastal areas to study how plants adapt to coastal environments.

センター前で観察された群体性のホヤの1種です。陸奥湾には比較的地味な色の生物が多いイメージですが、本種のオレンジ色は海中で良く目立っていました。 A species of colonial ascidian was observed in front of the Center. While many organisms in Mutsu Bay are known for their relatively modest coloration, the orange of this species was quite noticeable underwater.

浅虫周辺で観察されたムツサンゴです。やや深場の岩の隙間などに群体を形成しています。 This photo shows colonies of ahermatypic coral (Rhizopsammia minuta mutsuensis) observed in the waters around Asamushi. They form colonies in places like rock crevices in somewhat deep water.

臨海実習の一環として調査船を用いたプランクトン採集が行われました。5分ほど曳航したプランクトンネットにはたくさんのプランクトンが捕集されていました。 Plankton sampling was conducted using a research vessel as part of the marine biology course. After five minutes of towing, a large quantity of plankton was collected.

この時期、海底では割れた茶碗のようなツメタガイの卵塊をたくさん観察できます。近くの岩にはアカニシの卵嚢も産み付けられていました。 During this season, numerous egg masses of the bladder moon (Glossaulax didyma), resembling broken rice bowls, are observed on the sandy substrate. Nearby, egg capsules of a Rapa whelk (Rapana venosa) were also attached to the rocks.

先日センター敷地内で見かけたオオツノトンボです。トンボではなくウスバカゲロウに近い仲間のようで、独特の姿勢で止まっていました。 An owlfly (Protidricerus japonicus) spotted on the Center’s grounds the other day. Although it looks like a dragonfly, it belongs to a completely different taxonomic group. It was resting in a very characteristic pose.

先週末も高校生の実習。午前中は磯、午後は藻場と異なる生息地に棲む様々な生物を観察できました！はじめて見る生物にみんな興味津々でした！ A high school course was also held last weekend. The students observed the rocky shore in the morning and the seaweed beds in the afternoon, showing great interest in the species they encountered for the first time.

センター前の海底にてキアンコウらしき巨大な卵帯を見かけました。長さは2m近く、内部で稚魚が動いている様子も観察できました。 Near the center, a large jelly-like egg veil—likely from a yellow goosefish—was spotted underwater. Measuring nearly 2 meters in length, embryo movement was clearly visible within the veil.

フキの葉の上で休んでいるモリアオガエルを見かけました。樹上性のカエルのようですが、意外と色々な場所にいるようです。 I spotted a forest green tree frog resting on a leaf. Although they are tree-dwelling frogs, they seem to show up in various places around the Center.

飼育中のヒメエゾボラの卵塊から稚貝が生まれたようです！親個体と比較しても随分小さく可愛らしい姿をしています！ Inside the laboratory tank, juvenile gastropods (Neptunea arthritica) have hatched from their egg masses. They are so small and cute compared to the adults!

センター周辺の磯ではこの時期ウミトラノオという海藻が繁茂していますが、時期を同じくして陸上ではオカトラノオという植物の花がたくさん咲いています。 Around this time of year, a seaweed known in Japanese as umitoranoo grows abundantly along the rocky shores near the Center, while on land, a plant called okatoranoo in Japanese is in blooming with many flowers.

敷地内にキセルガイの仲間が出てきていました。湿度が高めなので活動的になっているのでしょうか。 A door snail appeared on a stump on the Center’s grounds. It might be active because of the high humidity.

本日、センター周辺ではたくさんのトンボたちが飛び交っていました。調査船にも敷地内にも研究棟の壁にもあちこちで羽を休めるトンボの姿が確認できました。 Many dragonflies were flying around the center today. They were seen resting everywhere, from the research vessel and the grounds to the walls of the research building.

センター敷地内の木の枝でモリアオガエルが休んでいました。たまに見かけることがありますが近くに水場はなく、いったいどこからやって来ているのか不思議です。 A Forest Green Tree Frog was resting on a tree branch on the center's grounds. We encounter them occasionally, but with no water nearby, I really wonder where they are coming from.
