Dug up an ancient Svelte component I made years ago. Republished it because we need the web a bit more colourful stephane-vanraes.github.io/svelte-multi...

React Summit US (around the same dates as svelte) is 1/5 women. But I wonder how much we can blame the smaller ecosystem ?

I was a bit surprised (and sad) about it as well. Picking a random other "specific" conference like React Alicante there are 36 speakers listed and 10 are women. That is roughly 1 out 4, for svelte summit that would have meant 3 female speakers.

I like Svelte, I think it is a really great framework to build for the web. But there is one thing I absolutely HATE about it. 😡 And it absolutely ruined my life. 💔 And that is that it makes it impossible to not be frustrated when you are expected to work with something else in a project. 😭

What do you mean "double edged sword" ? Frontend is as complex as you want to make it. Using sveltekit you really only need the basics: HTML, JS & CSS plus some svelte/-kit specific stuff for routing and loading that are fairly easy to understand. Any additional things is complexity you brought.

when you don't have anything better to do so you start tinkering with some basic javascript. data generated in one thread and visualized in the other thread based on a shared memory block. no data passed around and no blocking of the main thread

I tried submitting a talk but the window just closed, not sure it did ? The button still says "submit a talk" and no way to see submitted talks to edit them so guess it didn't ?

fun activiy of the day: browsing through an entire not very well written entangled mess of a python ui codebase tracking every call to the database to see how it is used because why would anyone include a db-scheme in their codebase ?

The actual worst is when after entering the username it tells you the username does not exist or redirects to a sign-up page. That is actual a massive privacy/security issue.

when you are kind of in between projects and start messaging your line manager: "Shall we circle back over that and have a quick sync in an offline base touch to ensure we have all our ducks in one line" (ready to go to linkedin afterwards)

Summer is the perfect time to look out at the rain, remember my name and think about the fun projects I can work on. Planning on restarting my blog, that I abandoned like 3 years ago. And started working on a series of short stories set in Bergen inspired by WoD (might dump then on a blog as well)

Real time conversation is a lot harder, there are some apps, but my experience with them was really bad (a couple of years ago)

To stay under 50, you can probably use a basic translator like google translate or even a dictionary. Just ask people to write or show the word :)

Last time I was in France, public transport was decent, good iconography and very simple to understand words like "TAXI", "BUS". In restaurants I found a lot of waiters are used to extremely broken french and gesturing.

For written, I can say that he is better off then you would expect. I could read 80% of romanian by leaning on my french from high school and my girlfriend at the time could do the other way in reverse. Spoken is harder, while some words might 'look' the same they sound very different.

A bit confusing how he is going to work there like that :) but nonetheless. There are two major issues to address: spoken and written.

Yesterday I visited the Observatory in Belgium, celebrating it's 200th anniversary 🥳 a blast from the past to see the telescope I worked with for years ❤️ and kind of humbled they still use my now 15 year old software to capture and analyze images of the sun 🌞

Today I was fondly remembering playing Planetarion (and similar) 20+ years ago and how impressed I was it would update the game for 10s of thousands of players every hour. When it suddenly dawned on me it doesn't actually do all those calculations within a few microseconds when the hour changes

The worst part is, it doesn't have to be that complicated in React either!!

For now there is still "CodePen Classic" but I am worried it will be removed once this "2.0" comes out. And definitely unsure I will keep using the site if that happens.

Quick question, doesn't this basically mean "If this element has a sibling, and this element is hovered, fade in the sibling" ? In that case why even have the "has", just ":hover &" would also only apply if the sibling exists. 🤔 I might be reading the selector wrong of course 😁

but but `select * from users where user.dob 01-01-2000` is a a lot harder to understand then `prompt("Find all users born after the first of january 2000", { users })` (no joke, I have seen some code that more or less amounted to this)

The has:(:nth-child()) works fine but is quickly cumbersome. On the other hand I cannot really think of any REAL use case that would not be covered by :empty :has(:only-child()) and a couple of :nth-child()ren. Would love to hear more ideas

Perhaps if you want to layout children in a grid that is as close as possible to "square" ? In that case you would want to be able to do something like: --columns: round(sqrt(childcount()); grid-template-columns: repeat(var(--columns, 1fr); 1...5 -> 2 cols 6...11 -> 3 cols (math likely wrong)

now all we need is to define a standard form for export/import to improve portability and avoid vendor lock-in 😂

Been working on one myself as well, a lot more minimalist though 🙂 In your app you can re-run a session from the 'progress' page but there does not seem to be an easy option to do so from 'start session' ? (my app is fully structured around the idea of "programs")
