Keir Starmer, Angela Rayner and the Labour candidate in a photo opportunity at a local business during the 2021 Hartlepool by-election. All three are wearing weirdly muted blue "hi viz" vests, safety helmets and large ear protectors. Starmer is staring awkwardly into the distance, while Rayner side-eyes him contemptuously. The candidate is in the background, staring in a different out-of frame direction to the others, with one hand on his hip in a pose somewhat reminiscent of a teapot.

Have you considered the possibility that she's a wizard?
Octarine

Octarine is the colour of magic on Discworld, also referred to as the eighth colour. Octarine is strongly indicative of magic and can only be seen by wizards and cats, who both possess "octagon cells" in addition to the normal cones and rods possessed by humans. This is an effect akin to tetrachromacy. Rincewind, a wizard, describes octarine as a fluorescent greenish-yellow purple.

If you see this, post an archer
Jerome Cowan, Mary Astor and Humphrey Bogart in The Maltese Falcon. The scene is the office of the Spade and Archer detective agency. Astor is seated in the foreground with her back to the camera as she relates a story to Bogart (as Samuel Spade, also seated, holding a cigarette and staring at Astor in an intense appraising manner) and Cowan (as Miles Archer, leaning - almost sprawled - most of the way across Spade's desk and paying far less attention to the case than to the woman).

The kind of political instinct that's made her the chancellor she is.
5m ago 11.03 BST

There was one notable absence in Downing Street today, Jessica Elgot reports.

Interesting that Rachel Reeves was not outside Number 10 today

Reeves and Keir Starmer used to be very close, and until now their political fates have been entwined. One of the decisions that did most to make Starmer unpopular with voters was Reeves cutting the winter fuel payment early after she took office.

But Reeves is now reportedly hoping that Andy Burnham can be persuaded to keep her on as chancellor.

If only he'd had more than half a flag.
The lectern and backdrop for Keir Starmer's last-ditch attempt to keep his job. The lectern is the usual press conference type deal with a platitude and two microphones on top. The left hand side of the backdrop is a uniform red, and the right hand side is the right hand side of a union jack flag, leaning about 5 degrees from an upright position. In the centre of the backdrop is the Labour logo. The heads of three or four audience members are just visible at the bottom of the frame.

"He can liaise with different offices".
Starmer’s five-year term running the Crown Prosecution Service between 2008 and 2013 is critical here, because it means he’s actually had a big job before. Starmer can chair a meeting. He can draft a minute. He can lead a team. He can hold a press conference. He can liaise with different offices. He can stay calm in an interview. Those skills look simple, but they’re not, and they’re vital to the air of “concerned but kindly manager” that he projects.

"His Majesty King Charles III", by Jonathan Yeo – a portrait commissioned and approved by the elder brother of disgraced Epstein associate Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor. Oh, Keir, mate, we're really not at the who-you-have-confidence-in stage any more.
From The Guardian:

Starmer has 'full confidence' in McSweeney - No 10

Keir Starmer has full confidence in his chief of staff Morgan McSweeney, Downing Street has said.

There have been calls by backbenchers for the sacking of McSweeney, whom many blame for his ally Peter Mandelson’s appointment to the ambassadorship.

Asked if the prime minister agreed with calls for his chief of staff to be sacked, the prime minister’s official spokesperson said:

"It’s full confidence".

It comes as Downing Street said it was talking with the Intelligence and Security Committee (ISC) about the process of releasing documents related to Mandelson’s appointment.

The spokesperson said:

"We have begun discussions with the ISC about the process for releasing these documents. When we’ve agreed a process with the ISC, the government will then update the house.

The government will take steps to ensure that document release does not compromise the Met’s investigation".

It won't happen, but hell why not …
Nobel Prize contact form submission. Text:

The recipient of the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize, María Corina Machado, has purported to transfer it to the President of the United States of America, Donald John Trump.

Mr. Trump has, among other serious crimes against peace, recently:

1. Abducted the sovereign head of state of another country in an illegal act of war, killing many civilians in the process.

2. Transformed his country's Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency into a vehicle of state repression, inflicting organised violence (including murder) on his own citizens, both on the basis of their ethnicity and as an attempt to crush political opposition to his rule.

In purporting to transfer the Nobel Peace Prize awarded to her by the Nobel Foundation to this violent felon, María Corina Machado has not only violated the spirit of the Prize, but also abused the honour bestowed on her by the Nobel Committee.

I request that the Nobel Committee rescind the Nobel Peace Prize awarded to María Corina Machado, and publicly declare that as a result of their actions, both she and President Trump have rendered themselves ineligible for life to be considered for the award of any prize by the Nobel Foundation.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

The Nazification of the German Police, 1933–1939

Beginning in 1933, the Nazis took control of and subsequently transformed the police forces of the Weimar Republic into instruments of state repression and, eventually, of genocide. They did so by Nazifying policing. The new government removed anti-Nazi police leaders, reorganized Germany’s police forces, and reoriented police culture towards Nazism.

Key Facts

1: Nazification changed the organizational structure, leadership, training, and values of Germany’s police forces.

2: The Nazis expanded police power and used the police to target people they considered their political, racial, social, and criminal opponents.

3: Although the new Nazi government fired or retired many police leaders, the vast majority of German policemen kept their jobs and served the Nazi state.

Fuck off.
A post by @aardgoose.info labelled by a moderation service for transphobia, falsely claiming that sex is binary and describing intersex people as faulty. The text is:

"There are corner cases, but faults don't alter the fact that sex is binary. A car with a wheel missing isn't a new type of car, it's a faulty car. Some people have faulty bodies.

And intersex has nothing to do with trans issues."
