sobs as I remember what my kit used to look like, before I sanded it all down to get rid of print lines that no one outside the MMCC would care about or notice 😭

Hey artists! Quote with your pink art :) 🌸💖✨
A digital illustration of two characters in armor standing on a grassy cliff edge overlooking a vast expanse of lowlands. A title in a dark font sits in the top left corner: "Fractal Alliances - Little Golden Age (1994-2006)." The title references a section in the Fractal Alliances anthology (which currently exists primarily as a very big outline).

The two characters are Ev Stark and Fin Heran. Ev, with short-cropped hair in this illustration, is in blue, red, and gray Aetherian armor. THey are also holding a standard-issue blaster, and have two hilts sticking out of their back holster (they're non-specific because they're Magically Concealed Weapon (MCW) hilts). Ev is standing behind Fin, mostly facing the valley, but they have their face turned to look over Fin's shoulder at him.

Fin is wearing standard medium-level Talkian armor, which comes in shades of brown and metallic gray, detailed with Talkian red. While Ev is in full armor, covered from the neck down, Fin's armor leaves his arms mostly bare except for arm bands and vambraces. He is holding a sword in one hand, which is lowered towards the ground, and in his raised hand there is a simple gray blaster. He has another sword strapped to his back. Fin's hair is also on fire, as it is prone to doing.

The color palette of this piece is a mix of purples, pinks, and oranges. It feels vaguely like a shot taken at sunset.

EFHA headshot refs ( ft. the guy that gives me a headache bc I can’t decide whether or not he should really be a part of this story ) #art #ocs #brokendimensions
A series of 6 digitally sketched headshots for characters for a prospective project called Escape From Hell’s Aisles (yes, the spelling of “aisle’s” is deliberate).

Riven: The first character is a blond white androgynous kid with bright teal eyes and a stern, determined expression. They are wearing a high-necked blue tunic with no sleeves.

Carric: The next character (to the right) is a purple-skinned Tartarun woman with several short horns and blue eyes. She looks vaguely worried about something. She is wearing a purple scarf and gray armor. There is a dark scar on her right cheek and above her eye.

Ambrose: The third character (down and to the left) is a dog man with brown fur, a big red flannel, and a pauldron on one shoulder.

“Dave:” The fourth character is a white, red (orange) haired man with green eyes and sideburns. He is wearing a blue tunic like the Riven’s, in addition to dark blue overalls.

Mable: The fifth character is a red-skinned woman with graying green hair and glowing green eyes. She is wearing some kind of shoulder holster, and red version of the long-sleeved tunic Dave wears.

“Will:” The last character is a brown man with long, curly black hair pulled into a high ponytail. He is wearing a mask that covers half his face. He has glowing red-purple eyes, and is wearing another kind of shoulder holster, in addition to shoulder pauldrons.

someday I want to go through and remake everything I put in my BFA portfolio back in 2021, but still pretty fond of this one, so it’ll be complicated feelings-wise for me to redo it 🥲 it’s a scene from FA: Finale that has since been scrapped, where amnesiac Fin uncovers his old board of memories
A digital illustration of a man with pointed ears and a devil’s tail pulling down vines and glowing white flowers from a big bulletin board in some kind of study. The board has Polaroid photos, blueprints, and notes stuck up all across it. There’s a big bookcase to the character’s right, and it has books, plants, boxes, and a glowing blue jar on it. Vines and flowers cover the floor.

a silly (and unfortunate) doodle about Ev and their two particular tormentors (Shas and Deis, who hate them for different reasons) #sketches #art #ocs
A sketch of three characters’ faces with arrows and notes denoting their relationship to each other. One is a masked figure with a gladiator-style crown, red markings, and flowy hair. He (Shas) has a placid, frustrated expression smile plastered on, and looks really annoyed. The middle character has orange stripes on their face and looks confused (Ev). The third character (Deis) is also wearing a mask and is looking at the middle character like he would watch them being torn apart into shreds, piece by piece, and find it entertaining.

The notes say that Ev hates Deis, but is TERRIFIED of Shas. Shas viscerally hates Ev. Deis has a rather toxic “affinity” of sorts for making Ev suffer. Another note points out Shas is plotting mass murder 24/7, and Deis is there to help—but only if it garners him more power. (And he’s in it for fun too, because he’s a massive sadist.) Meanwhile, Ev didn’t ask for any of this.

On the side there are notes about 2 other characters, Liarre and Garris, who aren’t shown. Liarre is also called a sadistic bastard, but for him is more about politics and being anti-Pantheon (essentially he’s an atheist in a world with proven and involved deities). Garris is noted as being in it for the clout, and to cause maximum damage to those she deems “lesser than.” They also fuck with Ev a lot.

TLS - sketch page: Sal Aldavis just realized I never posted this other sketch page I finished ages ago! It’s my favorite of that batch too lol Sal is based on a series of characters I used in an old iteration of Lycanthra, and he’s very fun. #art #sketches #oc #thelycanthrasyndicate
A digital art sketch page featuring a blonde, tan-skinned living android (basically a highly advanced robot with a soul) with a long thin tail and rabbit-like ears. He has a green bomber jacket, a red blaster at each hip, and combat boots with green details and laces. He is smoking a joint. The whole theme of the page is green.

Notes across the page talk about how Sal came to the Lycanthra Syneicate as a refugee and was reached from a branch of the Archian Mind realer Guild. It talks about his siblings (of choice) too, and how he forms a sub-group called the Salvaged Remnants (which is how he got his name, not the other way around). The Remnants later become a useful surveillance group and local ally to Lycanthra, which they consider their parent organization.

Another note also talks about how Sal revolutionizes (Lycanthra-made) living android body types, configuration types, and related sex prosthetics. Voaden knows him as the leader of the Remnants, but any LA who gets a new body mod after he starts working for Lycanthra knows him as the guy who figured out how to make, model, and personalize body frames, personal code, and sex prosthetics (for those who want them) on a newly advanced level.

if I have to experience religious trauma, then the rest of you do too #art #illustration #religioustrauma
A full 17x11” digital canvas full of drawings of a black silhouette figure having some Bad Times, and also hand-written notes. There are a couple of spears and a drawing of the figure (me) being impaled on one. A note below this impalement says “I never asked to be hunted” and the one above it talks about eradication, which is a reference to several right-wing politicians’ use of the term in regards to trans people.

There are two different versions of the figure curled in the fetal position. In one, they are sleeping and hugging their knees to their chest peacefully. A note wrapping around their back says “sometimes I want to sleep for a year.” In the other version, facing the opposite way, their eyes are wide-open as they are touched not un-gently by glowing white hands. Around this one is a longer note about being afraid of human touch as well as craving it, and how physical contact was used to represent pain, shame, and guilt in the figure’s past.

There is a drawing of the figure’s face being held more tenderly, with the caption “I just want to be held.”

In one corner there is a phrase scrawled in big letters that reads “IS THIS FUN FOR YOU?” (asking God, not the viewer).

In the corner below that, there are two copies of the same figure, inverted, each with little red devil’s horns and tails, but holding different flowers. Theres a bit written here about being unable to be saved by grace.

There’s more to the piece than even this, but this is the gist. The color scheme is all reds, oranges, and black.

I really want to get around to reworking parts of this illustration series I did back in college (c. 2023), especially this one with most of the FA gang present. Just haven’t gotten around to it yet. #art #oldart #ocs
A digital painting with hard lines and minimal blending featuring several cabbages gathered in a large circular atrium filled with raised garden beds, comfy sitting areas, and a holoprojector table. The color palette is warm and vibrant, and every character is in unusually relaxed clothing—just hanging out, enjoying each other’s company instead of carrying on with a political role.

a quick Thelia and Ev piece I might come back to a tweak some more, idk yet Ev ends up being one of few people she can really break down with, because they both share the rare trauma of being child soliders turned into unwilling celebrities. #ocs #art #digitalart
A digital painting of two characters sitting together on a dark balcony edge, a warm glow coming up from below them. The character on the right, Ev, is holding the smaller one on the left, Thelia, as she holds her knees to her chest.

Above them, part of the lyrics to Plivia Rodrigo’s “teenage dream” are displayed: “They all say that ‘It gets better the more you grow’, yeah it gets better, but what if I don’t?”

Fractal Alliances - refs - full cast the full cast sheet (minus Talis) and height chart!! #oc #refsheet #art
A character height chart featuring 8 of the 10 characters I just finished posting about, except for Talis Errison and the Hackerie twins. It goes in order from left to right, shortest to tallest. Order and heights: Thelia Sparkes, 5'4"; Ev Stark, 5'9"; Fin Heran, 6'1"; Shire Paloran, 6'2"; Ameria and Alkaline Aviligne, 6'11"; Hirosea Chirrell, 7'; Aviera Lance, 7'5".

There are also heights of other minor or supporting characters scattered throughout the page.

Abbreviated character descriptions:

Thelia Sparkes: a short Tartarun trans woman with an orange and blue color palette, dark blue hair, a styled tail, and symbolic markings.

Ev Stark: a tan near-human with a round face, multicolored hair (brown, white, orange), and dark painted armor.

Finlay Heran: a tan Tartarun trans man wearing a black fictional band tee and lower body armor. Short brown hair, bright white eyes, tattoos, freckles, pointed “devil” tail. Holding a dagger.

Shire Paloran: a brown Tartarun man with magic blue hair and a matching tail plume. He is clad in heavy paladin-like armor and standing with a broadsword.

Ameria and Alkaline Aviligne: identical (and intersex) twins with reddish tan skin, darkened hair, and practical clothing (though Al does have a bit of extra flair). Longer faces, strong bone structure, both have twin tails with many fins—and also tattoos. Lots of tattoos.

Hirosea Chirrell: a tall, broad, Tartarun man with brown skin, long ears, and a wide smile. He is wearing a long green tunic and structured metal knee braces.

Aviera Lance: a strong, armored Tartarun woman with thick, dark brown hair, deep brown skin, and four arms and ears. She is wielding fire magic and a glowing ceremonial spear.

Fractal Alliances - refs - extras some other side characters: the rest of the Chirrell siblings! check out the ALT text and thread for more info on these guys :) #oc #refsheet #art
A series of headshot references for the remainder of the Chirrell siblings, who are mostly secondary characters in Fractal Alliances. Included are busts of Kota and Karian (identical twins who try very hard not to be identical), Lyran, Seah'ka, Hiro (again), and Arinya Chirrell.

Kota and Karian both have wide faces with square jaws and round cheeks. They have the same bright blue eyes and long ears, but one of them has slightly wavier hair than the other. They both wear shades of deep sea green, and have matching smiles. Kota has more facial hair, Karian has none.

Lyran is classy, and wears bright orange glasses and a thick green shawl. He has short hair and shorter ears than his older brothers, but laughs and smiles more broadly.

Seah'ka is calmer than Lyran, with a polite and professional smile. They wear gold and have gold tattoos, and wear their curly hair half up and half down.

Hiro has his own ref.

Arinya, the youngest, has similar features to Hiro but shorter, more cartilaginous ears than him, with a lot more piercings. She has a bland, bored expression and appears to be mid-speech, which is my attempt to illustrate than she does a lot more talking than her siblings (except for Seah'ka, who's literally a scientist and can talk anyone's ears off for hours). She usually uses her words to tell off insubordinate military officials who think they can walk all over one of the greatest strategic minds of their generation just because she's the youngest sibling of the royal family.

Aviera Lance likes people. She thinks almost everyone has the capacity to be great in some way, whether its small or hugely impactful. She balances this with her public sense of practicality and sense, and tries to not only ground her people, but to give them hope as well.

Her life did not change when Evansen Stark became Emperor Razienne. In fact, the only way it affected her for several years was by instilling a distinct sense of dread in the center of her being - dread that she will someday face the Empire of Atheria not as a tentative political ally, but as its foe.
When Razienne becomes intertwined in the lives of her friends and allies, she therefore sees a duty to keep an eye on them. In doing so, she learns what her rule could have been like, in another life.
Razienne, who she later learns also possesses another name, becomes like a mirror to her. Sensible, strategic, and a bit manic when handed powerful devices - but also cursed with the burden of knowledge to great for any one person.

To her, Ev becomes a friend and also an important reminder of what she has to lose.

Fun Facts:

• Has won more than ten Verdeska
Rhoan challenges by 2047 E-10 (six of which were ceremonial, and only two of which were challenges for her crown and title).

• Beloved by her people, especially by small girls. She speaks at many schools, and to all ages.

• Wears a carefully-curated mask of poise and maturity when in public, but did in fact go through a goofy teenage phase and has a glorious laugh (which only her close friends and advisors ever hear... most of the time).

• Practical, strategic, and collected - until she's put in a room with her top gear developers and plasma specialists.

• Has a knack for creating tiny, seemingly mundane, but supremely deadly weapons of all sorts.

Born: 9 August 1870 E-10

Heritage: Shade, Ialuan, Magoni

Origins: Amarilla Ventrisque Averiance Lancotta was born and raised to serve the Queen. It was her honor. It was her duty. It was her privilege. Born to one of the Queen's handmaidens, she was raised by eight mothers and a monarch, surrounded by royal and servant children alike. She was a priestess, a maiden, and an example. A warrior, a scholar, and an accredited genius.

When it was her time and she had come of age, she entered the Verdeska Rhoan-the Warrior Trial, a series of combat trials for Alcairon women. To nobody's surprise, she came out on top. She was inducted into the service of the Queen as a real handmaiden, and she had earned and fought for that honorable position every step of the way.

She did not get there on her own, and she pays honor to those who raised her, teaching her about all walks of life, every day that she leads.

Fractal Alliances - refs - 10 Aviera Lance, Queen of Alcairo and the most recent Daughter in a lineage of powerful Shade-Tartarun women character thread! /1 #oc #refsheet #art
A character reference for a strong, armored Tartarun woman with four arms and four canine-like ears. She has warm brown skin and dark, thick brown hair swept over her shoulder in a ponytail. She also has firm golden eyes, a broad and ridged nose, and stern, plump lips usually curved in a perpetual frown. Her fluffy ears are pierced in several places, and this is the only ornamentation on her person besides a band on her tail.

Her armor is well-fitted and practical, covering her shoulders, torso, calves, and hips. It's implied in her design that she values modesty (and PPE. Glares at the Talkians) on a social level, as most of her skin is fully covered and her tasset skirts cover much of her uppers legs and waist. She is standing with a glowing magical spear, etched with neon blue designs of magic and traditional magical symbology.

Most of her notes are transcribed in the thread, except for: the bit about her owning an exuberant amount of knives, her coming from a long line of powerful Shade and Tartarun women, the bit about her also wielding both Hellfire and Shade magicks, the bit about her punching Councilman Deis in the face (twice), and the bit about her strong connection to the Gardens of He'tara and the goddess Heathera/He'tara.

Hirosea Chirrell starts off not thinking badly of himself, but considers himself (and his future) to be rather mediocre. He prioritizes the uplifting of his family and friends, who he views as so much more exceptional than him, and fails (at first) to realize just how special and capable he is.

His friends, who he so spends much time supporting, realize this and in turn do their best to support him.

It breaks him a little, I think. But in a good way. It breaks him in a way that allows him to rebuild himself with the help of those who love him, and come out stronger and better on the other side.

His life also changes when Razienne comes into power, but not in such a direct way as some of his friends' lives do. His first and primary focus, then, is what the fuck came out of the portal Razienne opened a fortnight into their reign... (Starspawn, lol.)

Fun Facts:

• Has a soft spot for large birds and east coast serpents of all kinds (and yet, also adores large cats).

• Is known for his bright smile and practical optimism.

• Is, deep down in his very core, a very good person with bright morals and golden intentions.

• Gives the best hugs.

• Can kick a man's chest in (armor included!) with a single direct kick.

• Like being on the battlefield so much he retired early to keep his people and his allies safe. Is a bit scared of himself, and tends to be more "anti-war" after the Tartarun Civil War as a result. (Comes out of "retirement" for the War of Worlds, and proves to be a terrifying strategist even then. After, he really retires and resigns himself to politics and social advocacy.)

• One of the only members of the main cast to have an active devotion practice to even one god (his are Lio-teras and lalu).

Born: 7 December 1881 E-10

Heritage: Ialuan

Origins: Hirosea Chirrel grew up knowing he would never be the most accomplished or most important member of his family. It comes with being the second youngest child in a royal family of incredibly powerful Dreamwalkers (prophetic priests and scholars blessed by the goddesses of dreams, voidspace, and prophecy). He knew this, and he accepted this. He would become Overseer of one district in his family's province, and he would be good, but never great.

That is, he was content with that future until some very keen people showed him otherwise. A certain Talkian outcast and a haphazard kid-sibling or several help him realize that he is not only one of the brightest botanical scientists of his age, but that he is a capable leader and unbeatable strategist.

And slowly but surely, he begins to see himself for what he's really capable of.

Fractal Alliances - refs - 09 Hirosea “Hiro” Chirrel, youngest son of the royal Ialuan family that controls Trivaal and other remnants of the ancient Ialuan Empire. character thread! /1 #oc #refsheet #art
A character reference for a broad, stocky, grinning Tartarun man with brown skin, short curly hair (black), and patterned, well-made clothing. He has his arms behind his back and is standing at parade rest as he grins off to the side. He has a round face with soft features and a broad nose.

His pattered, warm green shirt has a wrap-around waist and a tied blue belt, and he has sturdy metal knee braces from a war-time injury. He also wears a round pendant necklace with a purple rune signifying his devoting to the goddess of Prophecy, Ialu.

Most of his notes are transcribed in the thread, except for the bits about him being best friends with Fin, Al, and Ameria; the bit about him always knowing more than he lets on, the bit about him being an active Ialu and Lio-teras worshipper, the bit about him loving giant cats and carnivorous plants, and being his brother Seah'ka's science buddy.

Admittedly, out of all the characters that make up the focal cast of Fractal Alliances, Ameria is the one I have developed the least. She's Al's twin, which makes her important, but her relaxed nature and tendency to stay out of the spotlight and work behind the scenes makes her difficult to really get a feel for. (I don't have to write her often, so I don't have as good a grip on her character.)

That said, I do quite like her. I want her to teach me self-defense and how to flirt with women. She kicks ass and I love that about her.

Fun Facts:

• Adores reptiles of all kinds, sizes, and shapes (especially snakes, shade-dwelling lizards, and drakes). Also likes birds of prey.

• Between herself and Al, she is the most likely to use her Archdaimen shapeshifting abilities.

• Also the most likely to wear actual armor.

• Learned how to fight and adapt gymnastic acrobatics into fighting styles from one of their parents' former slaves.

• Perfectly happy to let Al play the dopey airhead prince while she pushes all their policies through the Mercishan governmental circuits (most of which he developed). Let's him keep the spotlight so she can do the dangerous, important stuff.

• Pretends she is the calm, cool,
"sensible" one, and while she is cool, she is neither calm nor sensible 70% of the time. She is often the one to make the most reckless decisions, and gives herself the hardest jobs - which she then proceeds to stress over profusely.

• Only wears makeup for official press events and galas, but is very good at it. (Does her own and Al's, usually.)

• Has a thing for swords and axes, but mostly uses daggers and plasma staves if she's not fighting hand-to-hand.

Born: 9 June 1884 E-10

Heritage: Irosian, Miiredian, Archdaimen (tother)

Origins: Ameria Pasha Vitelia Aviligne wasn't supposed to exist. Her royal mother made sure she knew that from the stage at which she could comprehend such a thing. She was not supposed to have been born... except she had been, anyway. She and her brother Al had been wanted, once, but they had been shoved aside. It took her a long time to learn and come to terms with that. To reconcile the circumstances of their birth with the cold, often cruel person she had grown up with as a mother-figure.

That point of realization and reconciliation happened around the time her brother, her co-heir to the Mercishan throne against all odds, freed their family's illegal slaves and pledged to the entire multiverse to end what their ancestors had started.

Fractal Alliances - refs - 08 Ameria Avilgine, the other twin-King of Mercisha, and the authoritative legislator counterpart to her “airhead” brother. character thread! /1 #oc #refsheet #art
A character reference for a tall, broad-shouldered, intersex Tartarun woman who looks a lot like Al. The fins on her tail are smaller, and her hair is longer, and her features are barely softer than his. She has freckles and green tattoos, and is shown wearing practical red combat pants, armored boots, and a knife at her hip.

Like him, she has pink eyes and short, pointed ears. She isn't smiling, and generally tends to do less of that than he does. While his pose is more open and showy, hers is firm and closed off, her feet planted and her arms crossed.

Most of her notes have been transcribed in the thread, except for the bit about her being a master illusionist and an adept MMA fighter, the note about her hating liars almost as much as Fin Heran does, and the bit about her almost refusing to split the throne with her brother (she wanted nothing to do with it), but ultimately choosing to stay and help Al.

Alkaline is one of the characters I most enjoy developing. He and Ameria, his identical twin, are key to Mercishan reform, thereby completing what their ancestors set out to do by abolishing all of the Seven Heathen Mages' unethical practices and creeds. He's also a massive dork, a kinky bastard (/affectionate), and an over-excited matchmaker.

Al is also a case in which he wasn't so much changed by the Aetherian power shift as he was by his friends' direct involvement with it in the immediate aftermath (i.e., because Fin got so mixed up with the Aetherians and they changed him, Al was also changed through the developments Fin and the Chirrells experienced after meeting Ev). He's got his own story, his own villains (most of which are his family members), his own independent course of development... He's also very smart, and has that whole airhead public persona thing going on. He's very fun to work with as a character!

• Actually possesses an extensive knowledge of advanced first aid and wound care. Never explains why if asked.

• Has extensive knowledge of a broad range of topics, actually. Possesses several degrees relating to politics, history, and environmental science. Also poked around at getting an interior design certification, a landscaping cert., a lesser botany degree, and dabbles in psychology research (the latter of which is how he meets Ameria's to-be wife, Tarak Killian).

• Most of his life before age nineteen is held in redacted, highly confidential files that he and his sister classified themselves.

• Has an uncanny ability to mimic voices (product of his mixed heritage).

Fun Facts:

• Loves dogs, cats, and drakons; studies them all obsessively (with a fixation on ethical training and breeding of defensive Hellhound breeds).

• Has a thing for knives. (That "thing" being a major kink for knife- and pain-play).

• Learned how to punch from one of the prostitutes his father employed. (Also learned to bite, hard, from the same person.)

• After being named heir, while his twin sister distracted their family members, Al discreetly freed the illegal slaves his royal family members kept in the secret floors of the Mercishan Palace, then led a revolt and publicly claimed his and his sister's titles.

• Conveniently, no one in the public remembers this part. After taking the throne officially in the 1910s, Al puts on a very convincing show, presenting himself as an airhead prince who leaves all the important stuff up to his sister.

Born: 9 June 1884 E-10

Heritage: Irosian, Miiredian, Archdaimen (+other)

Origins: Alexandrian Lucious Kyro Aviligne changed his name to Alkaline when he was nineteen and forced to accept the status of "heir to the throne of Mercisha," which he did not understand and did not want. It was partly an inside joke ("alkaline" means
"basic"), and partly a statement that even though his mother had named him and his twin sister "heirs," that he would not follow in the footsteps of their family or continue its legacy. It was a massive social scandal, but then, so were Al and his sister. They were born bastards, you see.

Al came into his own with no help from his biological family, who tried to isolate and divide him and his sister from the rest of the royal Mercishan line. His mother alternated between calling them her pride and joy, and trying to have them both killed. His other mom died. His half-siblings were either just as stuck and miserable as he was, or they were in on the abuse.

Then he went to boarding school and met Hirosea Chirrell, his many siblings, and a hot-headed kid who would eventually become Finlay Heran, and things began to look up.

Fractal Alliances - refs - 07 Alkaline “Al” Avilgine, twin-King of Mercisha, and resident “airhead nepo baby”* (*neither of those things are quite true ;) ) character thread! /1 #oc #refsheet #art
A character reference for a tall, two-tailed, intersex Tartarun man with reddish-tan skin, lots of tattoos on his visible skin, short hair, and lots of jewelry. He has dark red hair, pink facial markings, and a smattering of scars.

He is dressed in a cream-colored sleeveless shirt with a high neckline (and likely an open back), as well as tight red pants, a non-specific black harness covering each hip, sturdy boots, and wrist wraps.

He has a long, angular face; a winning, charismatic smile; and short, pointed ears. He also wears a thin, sheer shawl thing that rests more around his elbows than over himself. His twin tails have many triangular fins and pointed ends.

Most of his notes have been transcribed in the thread, except for the bit about his messy love life, the bit about his being a spymaster with ranging expertise in various forms of combat, and the bit about him playing "airhead" for the press to let his sister do her thing and actually get stuff done (the media focuses more on him making a fool of himself).

Shire makes me sad. When I revised his character years ago, I wrote him to be a foil to Fin; someone who dealt with similar (but different, more violent) situations growing up and was forced to take on roles he never should have been given. He is presented (multiple times) with the choice to make the same choice as Fin: to move past what his mother did to him, and become his own person - someone better than her altogether.

In the end... he doesn't take any of those chances.

Fun Facts:

• Never learned to accept genuine offers of help, and has a hard time conceptualizing and understanding empathy (even though he himself feels it very strongly).

• Absolutely adores dogs of all kinds. Enjoys sitting on the floor of the kennels at Mercai and giving all of the K9 units his affection.

• Ends up with several Hellhound therapy dogs of his own, courtesy of Al's program.

• Secretly really likes libraries and research, and might have gone to Zitra'laa to become an archivist in another life. (Would have been part of Markis Sparkes and Carino Aviligne's group.)

• Disaster gay.

• Retrofitted his father's armor without his mother's knowledge (with the help of Evansen Stark and Finlay Heran). Wears it as his primary kit for decades, until he starts to accept his fate as a leader of Envari and... changes things.

• Typically reserved and somewhat quiet.

• Has an unfortunate habit of befriending very dangerous people. (Ev, Aviera Lance, Star Squad, a disgraced Death Mage, a botantical bio-terrorist...)

Born: 15 March 1916 E-10

Heritage: Bronzeblood, Ialuan, Herrenic

Origins: Shiren'x ("shy-rence") Paloran grew up knowing he wasn't worth anything unless he could provide a vital service for his mother. He was a bargaining chip, a justification for murder, a conveniently dependent entity. It clicked for him when he was about twelve, when his mother killed his father in cold blood, took control of the Envarian Republic Convention, and began dismantling the province from the inside out. He watched his world crumble twice: first when his father died, and then slowly, as his mother tried to kill his province, too.

Shire did not become a different person when he met Evansen Stark, Finlay Heran, and Thelia Sparkes during the Enzian Civil War of the 1930s. He witnessed people changing, loving, becoming other things. He became fast friends with Thelia and Markis in the aftermath. But he had grown into himself long before then, when he first saw his own eyes in his mother's bloodied sword.

His fate was signed long before anyone could come around to change it.

/2 version with ALT TEXT (bc for some reason it didn’t stop me form posting before I added it):
A character reference page for a Tartarun man with brown skin, blue markings, long ears, and glowing blue eyes. He has a long face with rounded features, and a thin nose. Horns of varying size protrude from his forehead and along his scalp.

He is wearing heavy metal armor that looks to be a few centuries out of date, but is well-cared for (a modified note says it was his dad's). The armor set includes a thick chest plate, light knee protectors, a torn and tattered blue armored skirt (sort of tassets but not really), plated boots, hip plates, pauldrons, and elbow guards. He is also standing with a modified broadsword, which a label says his mother used to kill his dad with.

Most of his relevant notes have been transcribed in the thread.

Talis was supposed to be a ghost. One face among many. A pawn. Then, Razienne comes along and tells him to call them "Ev" instead of "Empera." They offer him something he hasn't gotten in a long time: a place to confide and find rest in.

Almost greedily, desperate for it, he takes it.

He never, ever regrets it - letting Ev become something more than just another superior officer.

Not once.

Fun Facts:

• His family doesn't remember who he is, and he won't tell anyone why.

• Has a thing for self-sacrificing dumbasses and MacGyver-types.

• Moral compass is a little screwy, as it goes for most Vanguard soldiers who've been in for a few years. He has a short list of people he cares about deeply, and anything that fucks with those people or their safety? It's murdered on-sight. Nothing else matters.

• Also doesn't take orders well. Shocker. It's no wonder he and Ev get along well right off the bat.

• Learned a long time ago not to let anyone get to know him past his exterior. Keeps up a friendly face and deflects with a lot of (often dark) humor, but you could know him for years without ever really knowing who he is as a person.

• Has a lot of pent-up exhaustion, rage, and pain. But he's so smiley! And he flirts so much - how could he not be happy, right? Never mind that dark armor he never mentions, but wears far too often to be normal for the Empera's second-in-command! Ha ha, it's just a style choice, right? Right.

• Can and does make a shit-ton of fake dick jokes. Is not afraid to tell people he's trans.

Born: 2 February 1878 E-10

Heritage: Aetherian, Shade (diluted), Tartarun (diluted)

Origins: Talis Errison thought he no longer existed.

He joined the IAF at age 18 with no intention of ever going back home, and thought that was the end of his old life. It was, oh absolutely - the Vanguard never lets people go, you know - but as it turned out, it wasn't quite as freeing as he'd expected.
Oh well, what can you do? He slides away, letting himself become another face in another suit of armor. He drinks, he shoots, he flirts with people who don't even know his name and don't ask. He had resigned himself to his fate when he looked up at a holoscreen in a bar while on leave and watched the new Emperor slaughter the old one with a plasma arrow through the skull.

Less than a week later, he is randomly selected from the ranks of the Vanguard to fulfill a new role: Aetheria Emperade Imperialis. Second in command to the new Emperor, Razienne I. Once again, he's only left with the option to go forward.

The best he can hope for is that this Razienne character isn't as brutal off-screen as they were on the live recording of the Tournament.

Fractal Alliances - refs - 04 Talks Errison, Emperak (second in command to the Emperor) of Aetheria, and experienced Vanguard soldier character thread! /1 #oc #refsheet #art
A character ref page depicting a black Aetherian trans man with flowy, magical teal hair, curling blue-green ram-style horns, and sturdy blue-gray armor. He has a sharp, long face, bags around his eyes, and a faint, tight-lipped smile.

He has several blue hologram screens floating around his head and his raised wrist, and is decked out in multiple Aetherian corps' armor (which he's not allowed to do, but does anyway). He has a blaster on one hip and what looks like a sword hilt on the other. His armor is marked with scrapes and weld marks, as well as some personalized paint marks.

He has glowing golden eyes and patchy vitiligo (non-symmetrical).

Most of the notes on his page have been transcribed below except for the bit about him taking personal offense to how the Aetherian colors clash with his own, the part about his transition taking place in multiple parts and times, his nervous habit of wrapping his tail around things, the note about him fighting dirty, and some notes about his magical skill (great shielder, fantastic teleportation skills (eventually), master combat mage).

Finlay Heran is a hotheaded, quick-thinking underdog who not only got off on the wrong foot when he suddenly became Arv'hein of Talki, but was also given a shit hand at life (caveat: being a literal prince). Fin wasn't supposed to be born. The last child of Syne Heran and Viridian Eagriss, two scions of a bygone Era of Tartarun and Shade cooperation, he wasn't planned for nor was he wanted outside of his parents' home. His tutors didn't know what to do with him. His aging external family members resented him. He was glad when he reached the age at which he could go to boarding school and try to become something normal.

Then, of course, he experienced the wrong puberty, and had to do his first major course correction on his own.
Despite his heritage (being the son of the last Tritaran Empress and one of three surviving Shade royals), Fin's history and persona is entirely self-made. His parents were preoccupied with settling a former Tartarun Empire during his childhood, and so he raised himself - with the help of a few watchful Trivaalian friends who not-so-subtly helped him along.

The last thing he needs, really, is to become friends with the goddamn Emperor of Atheria less than a year after his own messy coronation. He doesn't need to become more of an outcast than he already is.

... but who is he to turn down another peculiar, weirdly magical friend?

• Is an excellent fighter, and has spent most of his life up until his coronation training to become a career soldier. By 2047, he has trained in several regional, traditional Tartarun, and interdimensional fighting forms. He's a very advanced and adept fighter, on and off the battlefield.

• Develops an aversion to most plasma-firing weapons and lead-firing guns after the War of Worlds due to manufacturing issues (caused by the Angel Coalition/Phantasma). By 2047, he will occasionally use plasma blasters from one maker only: the Lycanthra Syndicate (see my other projects).

• Falls in love hard and fast.

• See the reference sheet above for more!

• (Like with Ev, this is 2047 Fin. He goes through a lot in the series too, including some body weight changes. He starts out as a skinny-ass punk.)

• The "backlash" Fin faces isn't the same kind of transphobia many of us face in real life. It's subtler, and isn't backed by cruel intentions or dehumanizing beliefs. It's still prejudice, but especially for him as an individual: the public digs its claws into him for transitioning because he was his mother's only (surviving) daughter, and his parents had laid very specific groundwork for his life path a a child, before any of them knew he was a boy. (TL;DR it's class-related, socio-political bullshit with echoes of real-world transphobia.)

• Struggled to manage his temper (and, therefore, his magic) for many years, and only started to get a handle on it after the Tartarun Civil War. While his anger usually came from a place of good intentions (i.e. it was often the result of people treating him or others poorly, or directly connected to outdated politics/system operation/governing styles from his Mom's era), it made him a lot of enemies early on in his reign.

• The older he gets, the better his is received throughout Tartarus (he wouldn't be elected as head of Nedir Al'verde (the Northern Tartarus Coaltion, which isn't really "northern" by 2047, if he wasn't

Fun Facts:

• Prefers plants, Hellhounds, and his giant
"pet" Wyvern to most people. Is a social butterfly nonetheless.

• Faces a lot of backlash after being outed publicly during his boarding school days, and that followed him for years afterward.
Became a staunch (and very vocal) public ally for the trans healthcare process in Tartarus, and for the trans community in general.

• This concept exists in an entirely different context than it does for us here in the real world. Tartarus does not adhere to very strict gender binary practices, socially or otherwise, and their understanding of gender and sexuality as spectrums of experience is vastly broader and different than ours. So when I say "Fin Heran is a trans advocate," it's less like he's demanding civil rights and the right to be treated like a person, and more like he's spending his time advocating for transparent healthcare, updated research and practices, more financial aid for transition services on a local and state level... etc.

Born: 30 August 1885 E-10

Heritage: Tritaran/Herrenic/Miiredian, Shade

Origins: The last thing Finlay Heran wanted was to take his mother's place. He grew up knowing he would have to, but he always imagines it being a joint decision, a rite of passage. Instead, his mother, Syne, abdicates the Talkian throne and leaves him the crowns when he turns twenty-one, then disappears into the unknown. He's left untrained and utterly unprepared to be Arv'hein. His mothers former council members either pity him or loathe him. He has no one to turn to, and very few people he can trust. He's terrified.

Then a scruffy Aetherian crash-lands practically in his backyard while chasing some kind of beast from void-hell. And, what do you know, it's the new Emperor of Aetheria, actually trying to... fix their own mess. And apparently they don't know anything either.

And he starts to feel a little less alone.
