Artists, what are the questions that keep you up at night: Is what I'm making art? Hasn't it all been done before? In Artist Commons, our resident philosopher of art, Dr. Rebecca Millsop (@noumenal.bsky.social), helps us explore these questions and connect them to the work we're making.

Art history is about more than just the past. It gives artist tools to think with and helps us understand how images speak when we sit down to work in our studios One of our favorite works from Dr Amy Raffel's art history lecture a couple weeks ago was Martha Rosler’s SEMIOTICS OF THE KITCHEN [1/2]

Filippo Tommaso Marinetti and the Italian Futurists thought traditional language was too slow for the modern world. Grammar, punctuation, syntax, even the rectangle of the page — all of it belonged to the past. So they broke language open. [1/2] #ArtHistory #ModernArt #ItalianFuturism #AvantGarde

Application deadline extended! We heard your requests for more time to finish your applications, so we've extended the application deadline to Monday, June 22. We get it. It takes time to fill out a strong application, to find the right words and to select good images for the portfolio section.

Last chance to apply! For an artist, being part of a cohort can be a transformative experience, where you learn to push your work and ask better questions about what you're making. We have some great cohorts shaping up for July. Application deadline is tonight.

Dada was born from a world that no longer made sense. After World War I, many Dada artists believed that their so-called rational society had led to the very violence it claimed to prevent. The values of middle class Europe had failed. [1/2]

How have artists used text as a visual medium? Last week Dr. Amy Raffel sat down with our students to talk about the use of text throughout art history. Of course, you can't talk about text in art without touching upon the Dadaists, including this delightfully odd performance by Hugo Ball.

Artists need to protect their rights. The US Copyright Office makes it easy to register artworks through their website. It costs a small fee, but in return you get the legal protection that if someone misuses your image, like putting it on a product or in an ad, you're likely entitled to: [1/2]

You can't copyright an idea. A sunset is an idea, or at least a shared subject. Anyone can paint it. Anyone can photograph it. But your photograph of that sunset is a specific expression: your timing, your framing, and your finished image. That’s what copyright is concerned with. [1/2]

Great artists steal. Richard Prince is famous for appropriating the work of other creators, so it's fun to see artist Michael Neff (@heyneff) turn the tables and appropriate Prince by removing the cowboy figures to turn these once Marlboro Man ads into pure, abstracted landscapes. [1/2]

Kehinde Wiley doesn’t hide his references. He wants you to see that he copied from Ingres's original painting of Napoleon. The composition, the pose, the trappings of power. Instead of asking viewers merely to admire power, his new painting asks us to reconsider how power is staged and performed.

This quarter, art historian Dr. Cristin McKnight Sethi spoke to Artist Commons' students about the history of quilting in contemporary art. There are many ways for a figurative image to become a quilt. Cut fabric can be layered into a composition, or images can be printed onto fabric. [1/2]

What changes when an artist puts an ordinary object on a gallery wall? When does a bed stop being a bed? Art historian Cristin McKnight Sethi looks at Robert Rauschenberg's combines, like his 1955 piece BED, which blur the line between art and everyday things. [1/2]

We often approach art by asking what kind of thing it is. A painting. A sculpture. A performance. An installation. But some works resist that first step. Sónia Almeida’s work refuses to give us a stable category, and that refusal becomes part of the experience. [1/2]

What if art doesn’t have to be so serious? Fine art photographer Yasumasa Morimura reminds us that art has always had a relationship to entertainment and spectacle. Even the old masters, like Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci, were making work for patron's homes and public spaces. [1/2]

Before you make art in the studio this week try this: Make yourself a rule. It can be simple: only use one material or one tool, one color or one type of mark or gesture. When you narrow your options, you have to listen more closely to your materials. Limits can change the way you see your work.

Can I use this image in my art? When does appropriation become fair use? Prof. Cheyenne Rudolph looks at Richard Prince’s use of photographs from Patrick Cariou’s book Yes Rasta for his Canal Zone series. Prince physically cut images from the book and altered them. He didn’t ask for permission.

The quote that "great artists steal" is nowhere more true than the work of Yasumasa Morimura, who restages famous paintings from art history as photographs. Morimura's photos don't just ask us to recognize the original reference, but to reconsider it entirely. They turn cultural memory on its head.

Is any artwork truly original? Last week, Prof. Cheyenne Rudolph looked at Kehinde Wiley’s portraits as an example of how artists borrow from one another. By reworking old master paintings and replacing their figures with Black subjects, Wiley redirects the authority of art history to new ends.

Michelangelo's quote is a good reminder that patience isn't passive. The patience to trust slow growth. The patience to protect the quiet part. The patience to keep looking. The patience to let the work teach you what it needs. The patience to keep going when no one else can see it yet. [1/2]

What can Michelangelo teach us about composition in art? Composition is about more than where an artist places objects. It's about controlling a viewer's eye lines, and creating a sense of tension and release. [1/2]

Working in ceramic and steel, artist Sanford Biggers mashes up the disciplines of quilting and sculpture to create geometric works. Rather than treating quilting as a flat or domestic form, Biggers expands its visual logic into space, transforming pattern and repetition into a sculptural presence.

The best version of an artwork isn’t always the one you planned. In this final clip from papercut artist Andrew Benincasa’s process lecture, he describes how many of his strongest works evolve toward the end. Not because his original plan failed, but because making art is often intuitive.
