🎫 In 1941, the State Hermitage Museum in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg), Russia evacuated over a million artworks to the Ural Mountains for safekeeping during the war, leaving the empty frames hanging on gallery walls.
An empty frame labelled 'Bacchus' by Peter Paul Rubens, circa 1638-1640. Image should be of a vertical oil painting depicts a large, pale, corpulent figure of Bacchus, the Roman god of wine, in the middle of the canvas. He sits on a large wooden wine barrel on its side, slightly turned to the left. In this outdoor scene, Bacchus is nude except for a grape leaf crown. He raises a large shallow wine goblet up high with his right hand. A blond woman wearing a red dress with one breast exposed, pours red wine into the glass from behind him. Her left arm is extended out around Bacchus, her hand rests on his left shoulder. Bacchus' right foot is resting on the shoulder of tiger lying dead or asleep on the ground. On the lower right side of the canvas, a cherub lifts his clothing to urinate on the ground. In the background behind Bacchus, a large naked mature figure with his back to the viewer, raises a large jug to drink directly from it. The scene features a dark landscape with swirling clouds, the light centres on the flesh tones of the figures in the foreground.
