Our latest paper in PLoS Biology was a great project. We show that the human olfactory system seems to code mainly odor perception (rated intensity), not physical properties (concentration). Fantastic work by @nordenneuro.bsky.social, @artinarshamian.bsky.social, Irene Zanettin, and Mikael Lundkvist

I told Gemini that it gave me a reference that doesn't exist (literately: "the paper XXX does not exist"). It started arguing back! I had to prove it back-and-forth four times (!!) before it admitted the error! Now it named our chat: "Fictional References Accusation" How disturbing is that?

Your pupils change size as you breathe – here’s why this new discovery is important
It was previously believed that our pupil size was only affected by three things: light, focusing on nearby objects and cognitive effects.

Breathing and Vision May Be Linked—Here’s Why That Matters
Researchers from the Karolinska Institutet have discovered a new connection between our vision and breathing.

🧵Meet the Pupillary Respiratory-Phase Response (PRP): pupils constrict during inhalation and dilate during exhalation. It is the fourth known mechanism influencing pupil size, alongside the pupillary light, near fixation, and psychosensory responses.

Our new research reveals how the olfactory bulb (OB) and piriform cortex (PC) communicate odor valence in humans. plos.io/3NrX79q

The human olfactory bulb communicates perceived odor valence to the piriform cortex in the gamma band and receives a refined representation back in the beta band
How is information about odor valence communicated from the olfactory bulb to the olfactory cortex in humans? This neuroimaging study reveals when the subjective valence information is communicated, a...

Your pupils change size as you breathe
Our pupils shrink and expand as we breathe in and out, but whether this affects vision is unclear

Research shows breathing can change our exteroceptive & affective perception, but how? Pleased to share our latest study, led by my PhD student Malthe Brændholt w/ Daniel Kluger, where we investigated the cognitive mechanisms using computational modeling! 🧠📈 www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

Here we show that the human olfactory bulb can detect metabolic state, as evidenced by its response to fasting. This method enables the use of odors to study metabolic changes in health and disease (e.g., in eating disorders). Use it! #neuroskyence  www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

Me: Draw a brain with the olfactory bulb and piriform cortex marked. ChatGpt: The illustration of the human brain with the olfactory bulb and piriform cortex marked is now available. Me: Yeah, it seems pretty reasonable. Thanks!

The link between respiration and arousal is a bit more puzzling than widely assumed, as pointed out in the great review by non-blue Martin Schaefer and others from @odorjohan.bsky.social 's lab. Led by @ckeitelsci.bsky.social, we try to advance things a little with pupillometry. 🧠🟦 🧠🫁
