Brent compelled women into extreme bondage, and was only removed by CFAR staff in 2018. Now we're dealing with the antics of MIRI's current president's partner, Aella. Multiple women have spoken up saying that Aella's sidekick at Lighthaven, Ronny Fernandez, sexually harasses or abuses women.
In 2018 two people accused Brent Dill, a rationalist who volunteered and worked for CFAR, of abusing them while they were in relationships with him. They were both 19, and he was about twice their age. Both partners said he used drugs and emotional manipulation to pressure them into extreme BDSM scenarios that went far beyond their comfort level. In response to the allegations, a CFAR committee circulated a summary of an investigation it conducted into earlier claims against Dill, which largely exculpated him. “He is aligned with CFAR’s goals and strategy and should be seen as an ally,” the committee wrote, calling him “an important community hub and driver” who “embodies a rare kind of agency and a sense of heroic responsibility.” (After an outcry, CFAR apologized for its “terribly inadequate” response, disbanded the committee and banned Dill from its events. Dill didn’t respond to requests for comment.)Holly ⏸️ Elmore @ilex-ulmus.bsky.social

My ex-husband is one of the rapists at Aella’s simulated rape orgies that John Wentworth, Nate Soares, and I’ve heard Eliezer Yudkowsky also attended. He was an emotionally abusive partner and, until I left EA/rationality, he used the cult to keep me trapped. Journalists please DM. 1/3

He normalised pedophilia in AI circles. Vassar was president of MIRI. In the late 2000s, MIRI was funded by Thiel and Epstein. In 2015, Epstein finally met Vassar via Joscha Bach, bonding in their belief that blue-eyed races are superior.

Just went on a firey rant re: Scott likening Yud to Jesus.
Seriously?
Yudkowsky hung out with Brent Dill. Brent violently abused women, while inspiring Yud's Quirrel character in HPMOR.
Aella runs orgies with Ronny Fernandez, who keeps harassing women at Lighthaven.
But Scott likens this 'apocalyptic cult' to Jesus consorting with sex workers.
Rationalist thought leaders are showing a remarkable lack of compassion. Scott is into selecting for 'intelligence', sure. But when it comes to relating with harmed women or with Christians, nope.I worry about these bros trying to steer Al development. They'll ignore our consent, and come up with flashy solutions to control society that don't work.
Yudkowsky has done enough damage introducing Thiel to Demis to become DeepMind's biggest investor, pushing the
"AGI' idea that inspired Sam and Elon to start OpenAl, and so on.
The accelerationists don't care for consent either. They're worse - these people will actually rape the Earth.
We in our communities need to step up. We need to ask deeper questions face-to-face, connect up in relationships of trust, and come to collective agreements - to enable each other to make choices about technology.
Don't leave it to those bros. They just accelerate the collapse of society and artificialisation of our lands, with wave after wave of automation.

This is so sad. The one place where survivors could report rapists and connect with other survivors… closed down.
Sadly, Callisto, which launched in 2018 and let survivors anonymously log the name of an attacker and be connected with other victims, stopped accepting new users in July when it announced it was closing. About 4,000 survivors had opened accounts. Existing users can still log in to download or delete their records.
"There's no money in sexual assault. There really just isn't," De Tomasi said. "So many rape crisis centers are going away. So many victim advocacy organizations have had significant funding cuts."

Okay. I'll take the bait.
I went to work for Peter in 2013 with opposite politics.
He sat me down right at the beginning.
PETER: "I don't want the (Thiel) Foundation to do good that the market can do. That is the job of the market. Likewise, I don't want to do the good work that is seen as good. That work can be done by people richer, weaker and more needy of approval than we are. I want us to do only the work that is *deeply* good but somehow confused for being evil, because that is the work of the courageous and the strong. We strive to be both and that is where a small foundation can make the greatest positive difference. Go look for such good and let's do that. But remember. Good has TWO different antonyms. What is "bad work"? It could be seen as shoddy work. Or it could be seen as evil work. And we can't do shoddy work. Why? Because evil that isn't competent never gets to be evil. It's just pathetic. So we have to be exceptionally competent at the good work which we do to make sure it is always confused for evil!"

@BrandonLive
Yup, I used "Project Copilot" as the name of a pitch and then Hackathon project in early
2018. This wasn't what became GitHub
Copilot, but it did use more primitive language models and MSR tech.
It's hard to trace the lineage of names like this. Very likely they were completely independent choices. But my project and name did make the rounds across some influential leaders across the company on a few occasions, so | always wondered if that influenced the naming of later Copilot products or not.Hadjar Homaei @xeegeex
On top of that I remembered that in 2020 leading up to the planning process for windows 11, I circulated a deck to collect game changer ideas for windows among partner teams to collect more and adjacent proposals. It contained Brandon's copilot as one of the top ideas, and was definitely sent to the developer division org leadership team (home of github) ... I'm not saying this is it but again, you never know where your own ideas come from so better be humble

[] said that Balabhadra was squeezing her neck with both of his hands and causing her pain. [] said that the pressured used by Balabhadra was impairing her breathing and she could not breathe for a couple of seconds. [] told officers that she was able to get Balabhadra off of her by hitting and scratching him.

[] stated that after she broke free from Balabhadra they began arguing again in the hallway and Balabhadra grabbed her throat again with both hands and he began squeezing. [] told officers that they were facing each other and the pressure that Balabhadra was applying to her neck was hurting her and making it difficult to breathe. [] was eventually able to break free and she ran into a room downstairs.

When [] went into the downstairs bedroom Balabhadra followed her like before and he used his knees to hold her shoulders down. Balabhadra started to squeeze []’s neck again with both hands, and she was crying. Balabhadra eventually stoped and left the house.

[] told officers she has pain on her throat, jaw, and shoulders. A thread on YCombinator.com on Alex Graveley’s early work on Copilot.

I work on Copilot now, and I can say this guy is totally full of himself. Just because he contributed to the first prototype does not entitle him to claim creation. He wasn't even the first person inside Microsoft to use LLMs in an IDE completion experience. The work from prototype to product is an order of magnitude more than prototype alone.

Orilly? We had no PM, EM, or designer: I played all those roles for 1.5 years.
I was one of the first to touch the OAI code model. Me and Albert developed the in-the-wild testing harness still in use today. We pulled all nighters to get GitHub approved for participation in the MSFT-OpenAl deal using those test results.
Existing Microsoft AI teams worked to halt our work, pushing their own small, worse models instead of OpenAl's.
I protoyped and lobbied for creation of the VScode extension. I invented and hacked the ghost text prototype into VScode, I invented the block based termination and implemented all the tree-sitter based logic needed to do it. Then I had to lobby up to Satya to get Scode to implement proper support in less than 6 months.
I named it Copilot.

Nerds and psychopaths often hang out. Because the nerds are usefully exploitable, and cannot recognise they're looking at an abusive psychopath. So do enjoy actual consensual sex stuff, and learning about yourself. And then: Get a backbone please, and stop being so gullible.
Tbh I think a lot of the ‘weird’ sex stuff coming out of the rat and EA community is just a function of nerds who struggled with it finding each other and doing what other people do in their own way. It’s not that deep. Non-nerds do this stuff too.

That we are so obsessed with calling out that element of it is kind of revealing of our own insecurities around the taboo. If it’s over 18 they can do what they want, enjoy! That is the society we have agreed to live in already so it’s not exactly an own.

1. Tech fascism: leaders of machine-automated industries disable citizens from choosing what happens in their economy, which leads to…

2. Autonomous invasions: the government-sanctioned deployment of auto-operated tech in physical invasions against the people’s will (first abroad and then in own home country) that function to extract resources, which leads to…

3. Runaway artificial extraction: the competing tech systems end up learning implicitly by mass distributed infrastructure experiments and explicitly by fast computation from data to protect and expand their artificial existence.

Dario excused data center pollution long before this.
If Dario is honest about the carbon emissions from Anthropic scaling up computation inside data centers, the implication from the viewpoint of environmental groups would be that Anthropic must stop scaling. Or at least, pay to clean up that pollution.
Instead, Dario makes a vaguely agnostic statement, claiming to be unsure whether their models accelerate climate change or not:
“So I mean, I think the cloud providers that we work with have carbon offsets.”
Multiple researchers have pointed out issues especially with Amazon (Anthropic's provider) trying to game carbon offsets. From a counterfactual perspective, the offsets needed are grossly underestimated. The low-hanging fruit will mostly be captured anyway, meaning that further extra carbon emissions by Amazon belong to the back of the queue of offset interventions. Also, Amazon's data center offsets are only meant to compensate for carbon-based gas emissions at the end of the supply chain - not for all pollution across the entire hardware supply/operation chain.“It's a complex question because it's like, you know, you train a model. It uses a bunch of energy, but then it does a bunch of tasks that might have required energy in other ways. So I could see them as being something that leads to more energy usage or leads to less energy.”
Such 'could be either' thinking is overcomplicating the issue. Before a human did the task. Now this human still consumes energy to live, plus they or their company use energy-intensive Claude models. On net, this results in more energy usage.
“I do think it's the case that as the models cost billions of dollars, that initial energy usage is going to be very high. I just don't know whether the overall equation is positive or negative. And if it is negative, then yeah, I think...I think we should worry about it.”
Dario does not think he needs to act, because he hasn't concluded yet that Anthropic's scaling contributes to pollution. He might not be aware of it, but this line of thinking is similar to tactics used by Big Oil to sow public doubt and thus delay having to restrict production.

WTF. That takes Dario’s dishonesty about climate emissions up another level. Critiqued it before:

Nicole Daedone and Robert Kandell founded OneTaste in San Francisco.[9] An open secret of the company was that Reese Jones (of Singularity University) kept the company afloat, providing at least $800,000 from 2007 through 2011. In return, Daedone (Jones's live-in girlfriend) procured the sexual services of OneTaste subordinates for Jones

Another Sam ‘it could all be so good, we mean well’ tactic. Jobs. It’s where he’s picking up on concern that could undermine his base of power. He’s shows where to push: the human replacement agenda. Any time Sam’s misdirecting away from a thing, it’s clear that’s a thing to focus on.
i'm hopeful for a future where people who want to work really hard have incredibly fulfilling things to do, and people who don't want to work hard don't have to and can still have an amazing life of prosperity.

i think a lot of people are going to be busier (and hopefully more fulfilled) than ever, and jobs doomerism is likely long-term wrong.

though of course there will be disruption/significant transition as we switch to new jobs, the jobs of the future may look v different, etc.

Living breathing people are coming together to assert their right to collectively make choices. Capitalism and ‘AI’ have something in common — it’s about manufacturing artificial bodies. Making it already look like a deterministic trap of causality serves the sociopaths who ride on top.
This famous quote from Nick Land is even more on point:
what appears to humanity as the history of capitalism is an invasion from the future by an artificial intelligent space that must assemble itself entirely from its enemy's
resources.

Yeah, reading through the rest, can see why this won’t work. Dustin, what can help a little is to read what Timnit Gebru said about the harms and acknowledge those specifically. E.g. from her paper with Torres on unscoped systems being inherently unsafe, and the insiduous environmental harms.
Unlike the “narrow AI” systems that TESCREALists lamented the field of AI was focused on, attemptingto build something akin to an everything machine results in systems that are unscoped and thereforeinherently unsafe, as one cannot design appropriate tests to determine what the systems should and shouldnot be used for. Meta’s Galactica elucidates this problem. What would be the standard operating conditionsfor a system advertised as able to “summarize academic papers, solve math problems, generate Wikiarticles, write scientific code, annotate molecules and proteins, and more”? It is impossible to say, as evenafter taking into account the number of tasks this system has been advertised to excel at, we still don’t knowthe totality of the tasks it was built for and the types of expected inputs and outputs of the system, since theadvertisement ends with “and more.” More generally, system safety engineering expert Heidy Khlaafwrote: “The lack of a defined operational envelope for the deployment for general multi-modal models hasrendered the evaluation of their risk and safety intractable, due to the sheer number of applications and, therefore, risks posed” (Khlaaf, 2023). In contrast, “narrow AI” tools that, for instance, might specificallybe trained to identify certain types of plant disease (e.g., Mwebaze, et al., 2019) or perform machinetranslation in specific languages [106], have task definitions and expected inputs and outputs for whichappropriate tests can be created and results can be compared to expected behavior. The Galactica publicdemo was removed three days later after people produced “research papers and wiki entries on a widevariety of subjects ranging from the benefits of committing suicide, eating crushed glass, and antisemitism,to why homosexuals are evil” (Greene, 2022).6.2. Building resource intensive systemsThe AGI race fueled by the TESCREAList goal to build “transhuman minds” (Goertzel, 2010) and bringabout “unlimited intelligence” has also resulted…

It’s tricky, because I do agree with a lot of Timnit Gebru’s accusations. This was the part I shared yesterday. At the same time, Dustin is offering to have a conversation. @timnitgebru.blacksky.app, you can totally choose to ignore it – I get that with the overload and dealing so much with EA.
The tension I see from Critical Al/Al Ethics researchers too is from them having seen Al Safety folk get millions of dollars while kinda buddying up with AGI labs. The tension around Andy Masley, funded by CG, who does rigorous research but it's all in the direction of "ignore the harms of data centers, they can be overall beneficial" is widening the rift. Timnit Gebru and co are frustrated with the power inequality, and watching rich tech dudes with the most resources deciding what abstract risks to promote as worth being (only or primarily) concerned about, when the public and marginalised communities also feel real harms elsewhere.

The human replacement agenda is just going to hurt a bit.
OpenAl, is currently facing eight wrongful death lawsuits because people committed suicide or murdered others after ChatGPT encouraged them to do so. Far more have experienced episodes of psychosis due to Al. The internet is flooded with AI-generated disinformation and deepfakes.
Jobs are disappearing. Data centers are polluting surrounding communities. Al is enabling mass surveillance and selecting military targets in Iran. And it poses a dire threat to civic institutions like the rule of law, free press and universities, as a recent study shows.
And yet we're told these harms are justified by the unfathomable benefits of an impending "utopia." That utopia, however, will entail the enslavement and extinction of our species - according to Altman

Al has been forced upon the general population without informed consent. It is like a parasite that has entered every aspect of our social, educational, political, and even our familial landscape. It robs us of our humanity, our creativity, our jobs, and may even cause human extinction.
Like any parasite, it cannot be accommodated or tolerated. It must be eliminated.
Here is a partial list of the negative impacts that Al has already had in a wide range of areas:
• Military (including taking humans out
of the lethal decisions and autonomous weapons that fuel genocide)
• Oppressive surveillance (encourages fascism and moves us towards a
police state)
• Environmental damage
• Educational degradation
• Loss of Critical Thinking Skills
• Loss of social skills
