If the Spirit could mimic this act of kindness, what else might he have inherited from his Creator? What rage—what cruelty lay dormant in his marrow? Things not even the old man could have banished.

Little medieval AU for the prompt Return. Happy Valentines Day everyone 💖

The main courtyard of Pelargir Castle is packed with men, horses and wagons as the Southlands army returns victorious, after months away on campaign. They had finally defeated Adar and his invading forces who had swept in the from the east, but the battles had been costly. The injured had been the first to arrive shortly after day break and Queen Galadriel is helping to helping to direct and organise the chaos, along with her chief handmaiden Bronwyn.

As the morning passes, Galadriel's eyes keep flickering anxiously back to the main gate, searching every face carefully as it passes her. She knows he must be alive, word would have been sent if he had fallen in battle, but she can't understand why he isn't here yet. Bronwyn's own betrothed, a knight called Arondir in the King's personal guard, had appeared about an hour ago, accompanying another injured solider, and Bronwyn's relief at seeing him unscathed had been immense.

Trying to quell her Queen's growing anxiety, Bronwyn squeezes Galadriel's hand in a reassuring manner, "He'll be here."

The final group of horses and riders makes it to the courtyard mid-afternoon and Galadriel lets out the longest exhale as she spots the familiar auburn curls of her husband near the back. She tries to remain calm, presenting the visage of a calm, reassuring ruler, when really her heart is pounding in her chest, wild with relief and all she wants to do is fling herself into his arms.

King Halbrand dismounts from his horse, easing the solider down who had been sat in front of him. Galadriel could see the other man is severely injured and several of the castle healers hurry forward with a stretcher to take him away for treatment. Halbrand turns, his keen hazel eyes scanning the crowd until his eyes find hers.

Then he’s striding across the courtyard, his long legs carrying him forward quickly and she’s already down the stairs, holding her skirts up so she can run towards him.

Halbrand sweeps Galadriel into his arms, holding her as close as his armour will allow, pressing his face into the crook of her neck, breathing in her jasmine scent. He can feel her shaking against him and when he hears a small sob against his ear, he pulls back. Halbrand's hands reach up to cup Galadriel's face, his fingers gently stroking away the tears spilling down her cheeks.

“It’s ok, melmenya, I’m here, I’m safe, our people are safe”

The first touch of his lips against hers is soft, feather light. The second is much more urgent, fierce and passionate, emotions breaking through after months apart and the sheer relief of coming together again, of returning home.
