The good news about the LC is, with a new ROM replacing the broken one (UD2) (thank you so much @luisfcorreia!) plays the chime, shows video, ADB works, even kicks out a bad floppy! The bad news is SCSI is not working. I’m betting it’s related to the 3.6V […] [Original post on mastodon.social]

Another great achievement of Xcode 27: yesterday me and my coworker had our Macs side by side showing the same file on the same branch, with the authors view on. My Mac was showing one author for a bunch of lines. His Mac showed a different author (coincidentally, me). Keep vibing.

One thing I always hated was Apple having the intelligence and courage to do things differently, and then some sheep-follower person with too much influence asking “shouldn’t we do this like everybody else?”. No. No you absolutely shouldn’t. If you want to do the things like the rest of the […]

And btw Xcode used to handle themes beautifully. The UI and text editors were independent. You could have a light interface and a dark editor. That was perfect. I could still see the UI on a lit room, but the text would not hurt my eyes. It was the only IDE that fid this right. Now, it’s […]

Xcode 27 is so broken that not even the back/forward stack works right. But “keep vibing”.

@brenttoderian.bsky.social The only time I saw that happening was with PPC. I assume they also knocked and wanted to talk but I was not at home (it would have been as “interesting” conversation…). I assumed that was allowed, since it’s political campaign. Is it not? Maybe it only happened […]

Interesting, the number or bad bytes is surprisingly small. Although it changes occasionally, reads keep switching between two or three different dumps. #retroApple

Ok, now it makes sense! And the bad chip seems bad in just some areas, not all over the place. I guess some address bit is bad. Sadly, the badness starts right at word zero, so the Mac can’t boot. #retroApple

This is even weirder than it seems. After the first 60 bytes, the ROMs diverge. But they are supposed to be the same ROM, says so on the ROM itself. I wonder if I swapped some address bits… #retroApple

All right, got it! It’s 512KB only, 4 chips with 128KB. I was reading a mirror on the second 128KB of each chip (that does not exist). I need to compare the contents further but on a quick look the 3rd chip is totally broken. Each word has byte 1, 2 and 4 similar to expected but 3 is totally […]

Does anyone know how large the Mac LC ROM is supposed to be?! I see 512KB and 1MB files. So, I definitely have a bad UD2 chip: that one keeps flipping byte 5 and 6. The other 3 always read the same. Problem is… all the 1MB ROMs I got are different that mine. Very different. #retroApple

@luisfcorreia I’ll test them and let you know. They use four chips for some reason so i need to understand how did they split the bytes between them but it shouldn’t be a problem.

Next thing I will try when I come back to this: rebuild my Arduino rig and test the ROMs. Might just be that the entire computer is working, but it doesn’t know what to do due to one of the ROM chips being dead. Hopefully it’s not some dead, irreplaceable component like the glue chip. 🤞 #RetroApple

To conclude today… symptoms (using a known to be good PSU): - Powers on, speakers/headphones do the usual “sound chip power up” clonk, but no chimes (good or bad); - Video chip is generating a signal (the monitor wakes up) but it’s all black. - Reset works, doing the reset combination makes the […]

This feeling never gets old. This is why putting the time to learn and understand how things work is important. Don’t ask the machine to solve a problem for you. Use all the ways you can to understand it yourself. Ask people who know more than you. Look up info. Think. Ask stupid questions. Get […]

Does anyone have the schematic for the Mac Classic analog board 630-0420? It seems somewhat similar to Bormac’s 820-0398-A / 630-0398-2, but I think that schematic has at least one error (missing RP1, which is quite important). If you have more test points than the Bormac in the PSU area, I […]

@luisfcorreia Unknown but unlikely. The board was coveted in cap juice with caps clearly bad. I didn’t power it on and the owner says he hasn’t tried for many years.

@luisfcorreia I doubt it. It doesn’t even click or try to do anything. I can try the logic board just to make sure. I do have the correct voltage (306V DC) across both big ass filtering caps though, so that part at least works. The high frequency part, that goes into the transformer, not sure yet.

Really sad to see Apple pushing so many good people out. It’s hard to believe there were no good positions for these folks in different teams. The new CEO is definitely not starting well. You don’t treat your best people like a disposable resource.

There’s a nasty trick there, in the pre-appearance manager version, I don’t actually scroll the two horizontal lines that separate header from content. Otherwise there would be a short moment where the scrolled edge would not have the lines and it would look ugly. The lines remaining stable […]

This is how it looks if I read the smoothed analog channel connected to the Mac Classic’s PWM output continuously. No idea why yet. In the previous video I was reading every 15ms. It looks better but if you look closely you can still see the occasional black line or artifact going by. #retroApple
