That's what they're doing. Garden variety imperialistic expansionism; nothing special, we've seen it hundreds of times. And those who cannot see it is because they are making a huge effort not to see them. Because it fits their agendas or their anti-liberal ideas. (2/2)

We've always known what they wanted. Ever since 2014. It's not Donbas, or Crimea, or the land bridge. It's the empire, the whole of it. They will stop at the NATO borders because they may be delusional but not stupid, but they will always keep pushing. Because they have an imperial mentality (1/2)

Fortunately, that's not for you to decide. Neither should be the government able to make that decision without proper accountability and oversight.

... That trade unions, or pro-EU organisations, or even gay rights movements are terrorist groups, and then everyone will be rightly calling it tyranny. Tyranny does not begin when they come after you.

I don't really care whether they deserved to be proscribed. The government should not be able to declare a group is terrorist and to make illegal speaking in its favour without parliamentary and/or court supervision. Because in a couple of years, a hypothetical reform government may declare... (1/2)

The real question is, will that expiration date come soon enough? Because, from the way things are going, by the time the US policy on Israel changes, I don't think there will be any Palestine left

I have always been fascinated with the story, ever since reading about it in an old reader's digest when I was a kid, and realising the body was found on a beach that I frequently go to (I am actually going back in a couple of weeks). So I *had* to watch it. 😅🤓

The musical has nothing to do with the movie (besides, you know, being based on the same story). It's hilarious, I saw it two years ago.

I'm not saying it was. It was not a a cabal of masked men conspiring to overthrow democracy in America, but a group of people with a common interest in changing towards a more powerful state (the irony of the "party of small government" is not lost on me) and taking advantage of the circumstances.

You could say, fairly, that the national security apparatus had always been pro-israel (more like since the 70s, but that's ok), but the Abraham accords started a fundamental shift that has been consolidated in this last couple of years, with Netanyahu directing and profiting from it. (3/3)

And that is the reason trump's first mandate was fundamentally a continuation of the previous policy (with one big exception, the Abraham accords, which opened the door to what we're seeing now). Only in his second mandate did that faction take control of and pivoted to Iran.(2/3).

Javier @arriaga.eurosky.social · 07/09/2026
That's just a caricature, and fundamentally untrue. The people in charge were Rumsfeld and Cheney as a representation of the same national security apparatus that had been conditioning the US foreign policy since the 50s. During trump's first term they called themselves "the adults in the room"(1/3)

That would have raised uncomfortable questions, like "why Iraq and not Saudi Arabia"? Better to keep it vague and (the real point) impossible to constrict, and therefore to end.

Javier @arriaga.eurosky.social · 07/09/2026
A war has enemies and objectives, and by definition that means it will eventually end. A war against "terror" (not even "terrorism"!) is a war against a concept, and thus eternal. GwoT may be over, but those temporary measures remain in place, and an authoritarian leader may use them in his favour.
230 3
Javier @arriaga.eurosky.social · 07/09/2026
In parallel, that allowed them to reorganize the national security apparatus to allow the government to have control over their citizens in a way that no democracy should ever have. Again, GWoT provided the excuse: they sold it as temporary measures because of the "war", but this was not a real war.
120 2
Javier @arriaga.eurosky.social · 07/09/2026
I disagree. I have always maintained that the GWoT was an excuse to try and reorder the middle east. After the end of the cold war, hawkish factions in Washington had been wanting to exert a more open imperial power to further the US (and their) interests. 9/11 just provided the justification.

Depends on the country and university, I guess. Usually they allow for it, but they limit the number of hours they can teach so the department don't use them as cheap (effectively free) labor.
