What an excellent visualization tool. I would have loved to have had this available when I used to teach cartography. hypertidy.github.io/playproj/

That & all the far flung islands and remote areas that have implausible reviews. And I guess study weird people like me that actually check to see if some crazy remote POI in Siberia has a review. 😂

Great #Eurocarto2026 pre-con workshop today by Commissions on Geovisualization, and Map Design on "Prompt Cartography". 30+ participants with open minds on the pros, and cons of AI in Cartography going forward. Good discussions, and practical experimentation.

It's interesting to see that it created a simulated colorblind image that isn't correct for the apparent input. Wonder how long before it can get that kind of thing right.

Essentially the same pricing now in Nessebar - which shocked me. The euro transition was taken quite literally it seems with a lot of places just making the Lev price into the new Euro price. Hard to believe people will go to the Black Sea when it's the same cost as going to the beach in Spain.

A challenge for me is to interface visual design via text I write/think of. It's a mismatch in form for how I work on design, like if I were asked to use words to describe the guitar tone I'm trying to create. I think we're in the synth era of graphic design and interesting things will come of it.

Excellent - the full tower breakfast is really something but my personal favorite are the freshly baked croissants and the smoked salmon scrambled eggs.

In our cart lab at Penn State, we are coalescing around the core value of authenticity - that we have given each other and our clients the products of meaningful effort. We also predict that authenticity will become more valuable over time for creative/thoughtful mapping work done by skilled people.

I was inspired here by "Tarmac Day" which seems like it has to be a day coined by someone who wanted to see what it took to establish a 'day.'

I also think many seminar students actually struggle with being concise vs writing enough. I'd like 5k words done efficiently vs 10k where there's 30% that's just fluff.

Anthony Robinson @arobinson.bsky.social · 01/05/2026
I use journal limits as one of my guides, and often you can't go longer than 8-9k assuming you have several figures in most GISci outlets. I tend to allow no more than 5k for a seminar class under the assumption that they probably don't yet have material for a full article but they'll be close.

Yeah, I wasn't linking to that yet because it needs a full overhaul as the content is far out of date for university labs. I understand NACIS is redoing the whole site so this update will have to happen later.

Yeah, managing interns + small projects is probably going to be a better fit for colleges/universities. Major custom cart projects are a good fit for full time designers + firms but most people who want a map made don't have significant resources to spend. I wonder if the EDC at URI would help you?

University cartography labs *do* want this kind of work - messy as it is! UW-Madison, Penn State, Oregon, Kent State, Syracuse all have labs - to name a few, and want to connect w/ local/regional clients to pair student cartographers with projects. Can be great for clients who don't have a ton of $.

Graphic design is just poorly served by text prompting, I am convinced. We don't train to design that way, and we don't have (and won't soon develop) useful matches between words and images when we're designing. I'm pretty interested in this in cartography where AI so far really struggles.

Is Trevlac just Calvert backwards? I'm from rural Western MD where we have Nikep, which used to be called Pekin before they had to change due to the fact that there was another Pekin in Indiana, back when post offices were supposed to have unique names.
