Technology will set us free! collectivefutures.blog/whose-freedo...
Why would a technology that liberates need a litigation task-force to stop states from regulating it? Why would something that frees people require federal money to be withheld from those who question it? Why would a tool sold as empowerment need its own advocates to lobby? A thing that delivers what it promises does not usually need this much law bent in its favor. These are not the manoeuvres of a technology that wins arguments. They are the manoeuvres of a project that has to remove the public's capacity to refuse it before it can proceed. A great deal of what reaches us as technical inevitability turns out, once the funding and the legislation are set side by side, to be a sequence of decisions about people: who is exempted from which law, whose property may be taken without payment, which tier of government is permitted to ask a question. All of this is defended by appeal to intention, to the good the technology will eventually do. But there is a principle in systems thinking that reads as a universal law: the purpose of a system is what it does. Intentions fall away, because at scale they change nothing.

After watching the Backrooms I kept thinking about the subtle messages & critiques towards our zeitgeist. The folkloric aspect of our deepest fears are found now online, in places that otherwise seem mundane.

Making a talk is a painstaking process for me. I just spent 2 hours creating the intro slide. For context: We are organizing an event for designers who recognize that the liminal space they are experiencing currently is not a personal failure of vision or a problem of insufficient adaptation.

People need to finally understand that AI is not here to bring any sort of efficiency or betterment but it’s here to replace you. I’m not saying it’s better than you. But it will replace you. The exec who’s gonna lay you off doesn’t give a flying fuck about your empathy skills. They will replace you
A message that reads: Today, Cloudflare laid off 20% of its workforce. The individuals impacted are some of the smartest, kindest, most capable, and compassionate people l've had the privilege to work with.
In the Design Team, we've recently completed a six-month-long Al transformation, and these designers have been at the forefront of this initiative. They have defined how design operates in the Al era and possess exceptional technical skills, with expertise in security, zero trust, application performance, and networking. Any of these individuals would make an incredible addition to your team.
I encourage you to consider them as you recruit for roles within your organization. Please DM me, and I can connect you with the right candidates who have the skills and expertise to meet your needs.

Bluesky had a very broken but still working translation technique and they substituted it with a not broken but subpar (not supporting many languages, rendering it unusable for many) translation technique. 👌👌👌

Today’s find. I walked into a new bookstore… so I had to. The Nietzsche book is a cheap copy but I thought I’d give it a proper read. Radical antiquity was a book that intrigued me when I saw it online so I had to grab it.

Professional design choices encode political positions through organizational structures and tool adoption. And so in order to do that we need to change the material conditions of how design operates through prefiguration. This might be the only solution and the most difficult solution to escape BAU
The two antinomies highlighted in this article are creating an axis where the four ontologies of design I theorize distribute in. The ontologies may be theorized as two axes. The vertical axis measures acceptance (accelleration) versus challenging (imagining alternatives) of existing structures. The horizontal axis measures efficiency (extractive) versus contextualizing (slow). Default design accepts structures and strives to improve operationaly within the current predicament. Hype design wants to challenge structures and responds through acceleration of new technologies towards a fuzzy future of artifacts with automation. Adaptive design accepts structures and responds through peer learning and mutual support. Schismogenetic design challenges structures and responds collectively through mutualist infrastructure that is prefigurative.

I've been thinking about design's response within this polycricis / metacrisis / permacrisis (also bonus: polycollapse) state of the world. There are 3 responses I see and then a fourth one which is almost like a wishful thinking, but not out of the field of possibility.
A Venn diagram visualization of a concept described in the thread of different design responses or ontologies towards the polycrisis: default design, hype design, adaptive design, prefigurative design

Spotted over Linkedin (of course). To claim Aristotle being the father of AI is such a ridiculous claim it's almost comical. But ofc they meant it. I don't have the mental capacity to ridicule people on LI, but any serious humanities person should have told them that this slide was full of shit.
