Anytime someone writes "grown-ass adults", I know it's serious. This is so good @marisakabas.bsky.social
Excerpt from the latest Handbasket piece which reads:
"There is little to no holistic evidence that Republicans’ Nazi problem is tethered to age. Yes, it’s more likely that a younger person who’s terminally online will post imagery to be provocative, but they’re simply reflecting the values modeled by the Republicans who came before them and for whom they’re now working. Project 2025 and its mirroring of Nazi Germany values, like drastically reducing immigration and persecuting people who aren’t white, wasn’t brewed in a frat house; no, it was dreamed up by grown-ass adults who were forged in the hellfires of the Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan and Presidents Bush and now Donald Trump administrations, and whose embers landed at the Heritage Foundation. Well that explains the 2024 election.
Excerpt from Luke Kemp's GOLIATH'S CURSE: THE HISTORY AND FUTURE OF SOCIETAL COLLAPSE, which reads:
"Think of a modern state, such as the US or Russia, embodied as a single person stalking the streets. Imagine what they are like. Overwhelmingly self-obsessed and self-interested, constantly boasting of their achievements, continuously suspicious of their neighbors, persistently posturing and hoarding guns and knives, and greedy to the extent of never giving even just 1 per cent of their earnings to those in need."

Text from A NEIGHBOR'S PRIMER TO ORGANIZING, ADVOCACY, AND THE URGENCY OF COMMUNITY: As anyone following the changes occurring within our government or on an international scale would rightfully conclude, a single election is insufficient to address the rolling crises currently underway. The forces that have taken hold of government are organized, coordinated, and committed to their generally aligned causes. So too must the responding movement be organized, coordinated, and committed, albeit to entirely different ends. The system as a whole has been broken from the inside out, and the sooner people realize this, the sooner we can intentionally begin the multigenerational work restoration, renovation, or revolution.

"Community" has taken on a very different meaning in the last 25 years, owing in large part to the Internet and social media, but as I argue in my book, community is rooted in a physical place. #booksky #community

Bring back shame; it's literally what our ancestors did.
Excerpt from Luke Kemp's GOLIATH'S CURSE, Chapter 1: Hobbes's Delusion, section titled 'Killing in the Name of Equality'. The notable excerpt reads: "Such strategies to keep would-be dominators in check included teasing, gossiping, shaming, ridicule, and even expulsion from the group. The most severe cases could result in death."

Finally getting around to reading Goliath's Curse by @lukekemp.bsky.social and (while I'm still just at the beginning) I did not expect such a compelling refutation of the Hobbesian "State of Nature". I wish I read this while I was working on my own book; it would've been surprisingly uplifting.

This whole piece is fantastic but this especially jumped out at me. Our society is in active free fall where culture is being destroyed....so let's step into that void and build our own.
Excerpt of Kelly Hayes's latest piece:
We don’t need more disorganizing efforts. We need organizing efforts.

We have a surplus of culture critics when we need more culture builders. Values, customs, behaviors, and ways of living are not produced by critique alone. They are produced through action, invention, repetition, and relational practice. So before posting a dunk or recording a TikTok, it’s worth asking what your contribution is meant to do: poison something, or enliven something?

"non-state actors have been rallied to enact violence against the same communities targeted by state violence" you say? (Worth reading the full text but this line in particular was especially relevant)
"As Kayali told us, the Israeli government’s definition of violence “contorts itself to repress any and all forms of our resistance.” Kayali explained that even during periods when it was not officially illegal to raise the Palestinian flag, nonstate actors enforce its prohibition by removing or destroying flags that are displayed in public and targeting those who carry them. She noted that this kind of delegated violence, as Ruth Wilson Gilmore would call it, is also occurring in the United States, where nonstate actors have been rallied to enact violence against the same communities targeted by state violence." -excerpt from Let This Radicalize You: Organizing and the Revolution of Reciprocal Care

Strauss & Howe argue there are 4 stages to a generational cycle in America- Idealist, Reactive, Civic, and Adaptive. The Civic generation of the last cycle were the GIs. The Civic generation of the current cycle? Millennials. Even if you don't ascribe to these generational lines, we got work to do.
Slightly closer shot of the Generational Cycle in America from the Generations book. Close up image shows that the GI generation was Civic in the "Great Power" cycle. In the following cycle, the corresponding Civic generation is the Millennial generation.

Depending on how you define generations, you might find this book interesting- Generations: The History of America's Future, from 1584 to 2069 by William Strauss & Neil Howe. They proposed a generational model for history back in the 90s that has seemingly held up pretty well
Graph from Generations: A History of America's Future that shows the Generational Cycle in America. The cycle generally has four parts- Idealist, Reactive, Civic, and Adaptive. Cycle is illustrated from the colonial period to what the authors call the "Millennial Cycle"
