Male kestrel on the prairie www.flickr.com/photos/armadillosoft… #OTD 10/23/2018 #birding #birdsOfMastodon #birds #aBirdAday (or more)
For many years, starting sometime around early October, and for months afterward, a kestrel would be looking down upon us every time we walked at the neighborhood prairie.

I think that this one is a male. It is sitting on atop a not-very-tall pine tree. It is looking at us through its left eye; its beak is pointed to the left.

It is a simply lovely bird. It wears a blue-grey helmet on its head, with a black strap along the side of its head and another black stripe under its eye. Its belly is bright white under a spotted breast. Its tail is rufous.

Behind the bird is a needle-y pine. In front of the bird is a clear blue sky.

The tree upon which this bird is perched died during a drought a few years after I took this photo. Eventually, it was carted away and I haven't regularly seen kestrels in the neighborhood since.

Audubon's Warbler on the prairie www.flickr.com/photos/armadillosoft… #OTD 10/21/2024 #birding #birdsOfMastodon #birds #aBirdAday (or more)
This bird stood out to me as unusual-looking to me, so I submitted it to inaturalist. The ID came back - definitively - as Audubon's Warbler. Setophaga coronata ssp. auduboni

Supposedly this is a subspecies of the yellow-rumped warbler with a particularly yellow throat.

However, in none of my photos do I see it with a bright yellow throat.

It looked nothing like what I think of yellow-rumped warblers. It's got a very fuzzy grey head. What looked to me as a white throat and chest, and a mottled grey-brown back.

So, perhaps this is a juvenile bird?

Reflections of some birds at Antelope Island, UT www.flickr.com/photos/armadillosoft… #OTD 10/20/2022 #birding #birdsOfMastodon #birds #aBirdAday (or more)
In general, Utah is not the place I'd go to to see birds. There are other cool things there. Petroglyphs, national parks with natural beauty...

Our vehicle broke down in Utah so we were there without a plan for quite a few weeks. Long story. Anyway, we went to Antelope Island in search of birds. We found a lot of bison.

Not to say there are no birds there. There are some. These had arranged themselves in an interesting tableau in water that was not too depressing. I think the white ones might be avocets. Not sure about the ducks though. All of their reflections make it seem like there are lots more birds in the photo than are actually present. Maybe there are about 15 birds and 15 reflections. Anyway, with a careless glance, the white birds might manifest to you as butterflies flapping their wings.

California towhee on my morning walk www.flickr.com/photos/armadillosoft… #OTD 10/19/2021 #birding #birdsOfMastodon #birds #aBirdAday (or more)
When your kid tells you that she must have a dog - repeatedly - you eventually believe her. What you don't think too deeply about is that your daughter, who promises that she will walk the dog, care for the dog, take the dog when she leaves your home, will sooner or later - probably sooner - let you down.

Which means that you will be the one caring for the dog, paying for medical care for the dog, and notably - be walking the dog several times a day, or paying someone to do so.

In any case, we have loved every dog who has come to live with us and cared for them for many years longer than our daughter ever did.

Sometimes, we see wonders while we walk with our dogs.

Sometimes we see California towhees. Which are wonders, albeit commonly seen ones.

California towhees are, at first glance, plain birds. Their feathers are greyish. Their eyes are amber and are surrounded by wrinkled yellow skin. I love to see the orange spot near the base of their tails that distinguishes their species.

Townsend's warbler in Larry's garden www.flickr.com/photos/armadillosoft… #OTD 10/18/2021 #birding #birdsOfMastodon #birds #aBirdAday (or more)
Townsend's warblers often visit the bird feeders I keep on my deck, and they are close enough when they do that I get decent photos of them.

But this bird seems so much more at home in the aspen leaves of my friend's autumnal garden that any of them ever look at my house.

The striking black mask on the brilliant yellow face of this fellow help it blend in well with the yellow leaves and thin black twigs of the tree upon which the bird perches. Its green, leaf-shaped body help as well. And somehow, I was able to get closer to this bird than I have ever gotten to any Townsend's warbler I've been able to lure to my deck.

Peregrine falcon above Hawkwatch www.flickr.com/photos/armadillosoft… #OTD 10/16/2017 #birding #birdsOfMastodon #birds #aBirdAday (or more)
I am not cut out for Hawkwatch. In general, the hawk watchers are expected to identify the species and perhaps even age and gender of raptors that are flying far away from the hill. My eyesight is not terribly good and I don't have good binoculars. Instead, I have a telephoto, which is not as keen as most binoculars, but it does help me make a record of what I am seeing. Another of my modest talents is that I do pay attention and am bound to notice when a bird of interest is approaching, even if I cannot tell what species it is.

I for sure did see these peregrine falcons early on, and perhaps detecting my excitement. it and one other peregrine flew close to us and hung out long enough for me to photograph. (Most birds that we counted on Hawkwatch were too far away to be easily captured on film.)

Pelican vibrant with sunset www.flickr.com/photos/armadillosoft… #OTD 10/15/2013 #birding #birdsOfMastodon #birds #aBirdAday (or more)
This bird is a brown pelican. It does not show much of its brown in the photo.

The sunset has burnt its neck and pointy head to a bright yellow. Its long beak is brick red, and it's wearing a grey-purple scarf. Perhaps its wings and back are a very dark brown, but they look reddish to me.

The bird is flying toward the left in a darkening sky.

I haven't seen many merlins, and I especially don't recall seeing any merlins in my neighborhood. Ever. Except for this one.

It was high up in a tree, but there's something about its face and silhouette that seems to me to be unique. Its face is white and it has a pale grey-black mask around its eyes, with light-grey tracks down the front of the face, starting under the eyes. It has a relatively large very round head and a mottled coat. Behind this bird is a flat blue-ish/purple-ish sky.

Junco on the prairie www.flickr.com/photos/armadillosoft… #OTD 2024/10/13 #birding #birdsOfMastodon #birds #aBirdAday (or more)
    • We see juncos just about every day we take a walk in our neighborhood. Which is not to say that they are uninteresting birds. It’s just that they are very subtly shaded – black head, delicately etched black wings and tail, and a rusty collar around the shoulders and back of the neck.
    •
    • The most striking attribute of juncos is on that is just faintly visible in this photo – the single bright white feather on the edge of one side of its tail. You can see it on the right side of the bird’s tail in this photo.

The bird in the photo doesn't look all that unhealthy. Its eye is open and it seems to see us. Its beak is unbroken. Its feathers are not fluffed or disordered. However, the fact that the bird was just sitting on the sand, unmoving, as we approached with our large dog (who was not acting at all aggressively toward the bird, but still...) told us that this bird was not well. We did call the powers that be about the bird, but we do not know what became of the bird.

A girl and her dog. Our daughter believes in never giving any dog food. She will not buy their love. And yet, they love her just the same. #OTD 10/12/2011
In the photo, we see a round patch of cleared ground, in the center of which is a girl, knees bent, toes pointed, feet just slightly lifted above the ground. Behind the girl is a lovely white dog, all four feet on the ground, planted together, gripping the leash in its bright white teeth.

We see the shadows of the girl and the dog behind them.

In the background, we see a field of pine trees in the bright sunlight, with blue sky above it.

The dog is long gone. The girl is grown. I think about this day and this photo all the time.

Animated pygmy nuthatch in my backyard www.flickr.com/photos/armadillosoft… #OTD 10/11/2016 #birding #birdsOfMastodon #birds #aBirdAday (or more)
Pygmy nuthatches frequent our back yard, often in fairly large groups. They visit in sixes and sevens.

The one in the photo pretty much hung out by itself throughout its time with us.

In the shot I've chosen, the bird appears to be dancing along the edge of a grey table-top in from of the redwood uprights of our deck.

Its wings are raised and blurred and the feathers of the wings are spread. The right foot of the bird is dipping down below the top of the table. The left foot of the bird may be resting on the table or perhaps it is represented as a yellow smear above the top of the top. The yellow legs/toes are blurred. The bird's lovely blue-and-white head is in focus. The bird's pastel orange belly and side are blurry, as is its tail.

I adore the silly songs and the tasteful golden crowns of the golden-crowned sparrows that start to show up in our neighborhood around this time of year. There's a nifty animated map of their migrations here […] [Original post on mastodon.social]
Unlike many other species of birds, the golden-crowned sparrows wear their crowns in winter, not their breeding season. The migrate to our area in the fall and stay over the winter, then fly away to the north to breed in much less regal regalia.

The one in the photo is giving us the side-eye from its left eye. It is standing on a bare stick that is balanced on the rim of a bowl under a flower pot on my deck. The bird's crown is a dull golden color. Not gaudy, but it makes its point.

Harrier and kite www.flickr.com/photos/armadillosoft… Belated #OTD 10/9/2026 #birding #birdsOfMastodon #birds #aBirdAday (or more)
It was a very grey day. And I felt like the company I was in did not much appreciate me.

The photo is also very grey. There in a single frame is - a grey ghost (a Northern harrier) flying in from the left, and near the center of the frame is a lovely white-and-grey kite perched on a bushy but bare bush atop a drab green hillock.

In the background are waves of drab green grass interspersed with barren grey ground below a blotchy grey sky.

And yet. A harrier! A kite! Doing what they do best. Eating up the landscape.

Whenever we see a gorgeously feathered white bird poking around the tidepools here, it's either a great egret or a snowy egret. If it's a photo from a while ago and we don't see an additional gorgeously feathered white bird of a different size, well for me it's hard to tell what kind of bird I'm looking at.

UNLESS I can see the bird's feet. Because if the feet are yellow, that bird is a fan of yellow SNOW (ew. I know. right?) and so then we know that even though there is never snow around here, not to mention yellow snow, that bird with the yellow feet is a SNOWY egret. This one is showing us both of its yellow feet, and its toes are splayed out on the dark rock upon which it is standing.

Also, it is showing us the fish it is eating for lunch. And this gorgeously feathered white bird is doing some kind of a joyous dance. Its wings are spread and its yellow feet are up in the air a little. Perhaps it's just coming in for a landing, but it looks like a dance for me.

These were both taken on one of those days at Mavericks where everything was as it should be. We are not getting many of those lately.

I have not had many opportunities to photograph wood ducks; am grateful that I got to see this one, as well as his lovely reflection, at Neary Lagoon.

He was swimming by with the female, his mate, I assume.

The male is a striking, deep-blue-colored duck with an oval patch of gold outlined with elegant white slashes at its midsection. His beak is a bright deep orange, with a white slash and a black tip. His eye is bright red. He's got white slashes around his neck and pointing up to his eye. The reflection in the water shows all these as well as the weeds we don't see in the frame.

They are not showy birds. When they fly, it looks like they are working hard to make progress. Their wings move slowly up and down. Their plump bodies move forward jerkily.

In this photo, we see two cormorants in flight. Their bodies are silhouetted against the darkening sky. Their wings are blurred because at the time, I did not have a fancy camera and my camera too had to work hard to deal with the darkening sky.

The bird is wedged between two thin, light-colored twigs and is holding on to them, one claw wrapped around each twig. Friends of CA Condors Wild & Free hopes you will join w/us in taking action when issues arise that directly impact critically endangered CA condors. HELP PROTECT THE ROADLESS RULE which protects wildlands for endangered species like the CA condor […] [Original post on mastodon.social]
Friends of California Condors Wild and Free recognizes that favorable public policies are necessary for our success in promoting and supporting our mission to enhance public awareness of the endangered California Condor and ensure they are protected, healthy, and free.

We hope that you will join with us in taking periodic action when issues arise that directly impact the critically endangered California condor including the habitat that condors call home.

HELP US PROTECT THE ROADLESS RULE
The Roadless Rule is protecting our intact wildlands for endangered species like the California condor and for the benefit of future generations.

As shown in the linked interactive map, rescinding the Roadless Rule (Alternative 2) will open up forest land in the core habitat of the southern California flock.

Alternative 1 (no action) — maintain the existing Roadless Rule
Alternative 2 (proposed rule) — rescind the Roadless Rule

Please join us in submitting a comment to the Forest Service to urge them to select the "no-action" alternative to the proposed rule change to rescind the national Roadless Rule.

Add Your Comment
The comment period for the proposed rule and draft environmental statement ends at 11:59PM on Oct 6, 2026.

Here are some talking points to consider when submitting your comment:

The Roadless Rule was written 25 years ago with the understanding that our National forests are the largest source of drinking water in the United States. Because road construction and logging are major drivers of sediment pollution in rivers and streams, opening protected areas in headwaters to these activities could contaminate drinking-water supplies for millions of people downstream.

Rescinding the rule is not necessary for wildfire response. The Forest Service already conducts fuel management projects in these areas.

Roadless areas provide needed habitat for 57% of the 537 species of conservation concern that live in the contiguous United States, as documented by this 2021 study by the The Wilderness Society.

New road construction brings human-caused fires, of which more than 80% are caused by human activity, and introduction of invasive species along with fragmentation of habitat, as shown by a 2017 study.

Its back is to us, but its beak is facing to the left, so we can clearly see the bird's left eye and the left side of its beak. The black-and-white embellishments on the feathers of the bird's yellowish back provide camouflage - they make the bird look like the droopy leaves on the sides of the stems. The bird's yellow head helps it blend in to the blurry background of the prairie.

The sun is shining on the face of the great blue heron. The rest of its body is in shadow. The bird is sitting atop the curve of a leafy conifer. The sky behind them is blue and cloudless.

It was a magical visit to Bitter Creek. We saw many condors. Most of them are tagged at this point. This one's tag is red and bears the number 1. It is flying alone in this photograph, in a deep blue sky.

A willet, I think. www.flickr.com/photos/armadillosoft… #OTD 9/21/2014 #birding #birdsOfMastodon #birds #aBirdAday (or more)
A subtle bird, the willet. It's mostly beige, with a single dashing white stripe coming down its face from between its eyes to the top of its beak. It wears a hat of a slightly more reddish color than the rest of its body on the top of its head. It has long dark-colored legs with knobby knees. It seems to be walking on the tips of the three toes on each foot. The bird is standing on a sandy spit. Its beak is facing to the left. Behind the bird is a calm blue-streaked ocean.

A hawk. Not a red-tailed hawk. But a hawk. www.flickr.com/photos/armadillosoft… #OTD 9/20/2020 #birding #birdsOfMastodon #birds #aBirdAday (or more)
If it were a red-tailed hawk, I would know it. But the consensus on inaturalist is that it is. Which it is not.

Anyway, this bird is sooooo fetching. Just look at those dagger-sharp yellow toes curled onto the top of the pine tree. And at the bowed head, angled to the side. And the puffed out white breast dotted with brown teardrops.

Pectoral sandpiper www.flickr.com/photos/armadillosoft… #OTD 9/19/2021 #birding #birdsOfMastodon #birds #aBirdAday (or more)
We were on a bird walk and I am told that this is a photo of a pectoral sandpiper.

Because of its orange beak, I think it is a non-breeding adult.

Above the pectoral sandpiper, another bird is flying overhead. It is very blurry so I can't tell you what kind of bird it is.

The pectoral sandpiper is in the foreground, standing on a rock. Behind the pectoral sandpiper and the rock is the water, which is bright blue and has many circular ripples in it.

A black bird with a weird red wattle-y looking thing drooping down from the top of its head all the way down its beak. But the coolest thing about this bird are its Dr. Seuss-y olive green legs and blue-ish green toes. This gallinule is walking on the rocky brown shore next to the bright green water of Lake Eola.

Yellow warbler www.flickr.com/photos/armadillosoft… #OTD 9/17/2021 #birding #birdsOfMastodon #birds #aBirdAday (or more)
Here's another bird species named in a way that totally obfuscates what the bird looks like.

It's called a yellow warbler. And most warblers are at least partially yellow.

As is this one. But this bird is mostly green. Anyway, it looks quite cute in an aspen tree with yellow and green leaves that match the bird. Behind the tree and the bird, the sky is stark white as it often is in our area.

Usually, the hummingbird is the stand-out. But in this photograph, the two sprigs of fuchsias are bright red, the background and the leaves at the bottom of the frame are bright green, and the bird is a blur of grey and white, with a bright black eye peeking out between some of the bright red flowers.

Don't see many belted kingfishers hereabouts. And yet there's one sitting out in the open on the big rock. Standing out nicely in front of the calm, light blue-grey water, overlooking the rocks and the sandy beach.

Downy woodpecker on eucalyptus www.flickr.com/photos/armadillosoft… #OTD 9/13/2023 #birding #birdsOfMastodon #birds #aBirdAday (or more)
This diminutive male downy woodpecker was making its way up a eucalyptus tree in my back yard. It's wearing its red cap on the back of its head. Its elegant black wing is folded on its left side. Its beak is point toward the bark of the tree upon which the bird seems to be floating.

My understanding is that eucalyptus is too hard for the bird's beak to penetrate, but it is likely able to catch grubs and insects hidden in the bark.

I am almost as bad at identifying sparrows as I am at identifying gulls. As in very, very bad. Have it on good authority that this is a Savannah sparrow, and I believe that.

This one is posed on a yellow/grey dirt path. Its beak is facing toward the left. Some green shrubbery lines the right side of the frame.

Band-tailed pigeon over the prairie www.flickr.com/photos/armadillosoft… #OTD 9/11/2023 #birding #birdsOfMastodon #birds #aBirdAday (or more)
You usually hear a pigeon before you see it. And it is a lovely soothing sound. Somehow, when they are flying overhead, pigeons are much more welcome than when you see them in a flock on your path as you are making your way down a square in a city. Also, band-tailed pigeons are not usually the kinds of pigeons you'd find obstructing you on a messy sidewalk.

This one was flying by itself in front of a clear, deep-blue sky.

The three cranes are flying over the Creamer's Field Migratory Refuge, forming an arch above the field. The crane in the middle has a very reddish back. I suspect it's a juvenile.
