I agree, that mindset seems to trace back to a century ago when the British Empire taxed a quarter of the world’s population. Those times are long past, yet the attitude still lingers in some.

You mean the English hatred of foreigners?

Andrew Jones @arj2024.bsky.social · 1h
Agreed, let's hope Burnham's comments allow everyone to move to a more pro-EU position. I know it's only a tiny thing but I bet many Brits would be happy if the EES airport queues went away. I know it's so much more than holidays but as a "retail" offer no queues is a big benefit to many.

Exactly! This is why I'd prefer it to be called "reciprocal EU Freedom of Movement" to make it clearer it also grants Brits the right to live, study, work or retire in the EU and limits who can freely come to the UK to EU citizens.

It's because Farage has been very good at telling people FoM means foreigners can flood into the UK from anywhere in the world. Of course, that's nonsense but even when he's on BBC News nobody will dare challenge him about these half-truths.

Good point. We should focus on how we’ll rejoin instead of debating whether we should. Rejoining is now the default stance, especially after Burnham finally made it clear it’s the only sensible way out of the post-Brexit gloom.

Indeed, as an enormous benefit that I've enjoyed but is unavailable to my kids. In a country with an ageing population immigration is an essential thing unless you want to scrap pensions and force people to work until they drop.

Andrew Jones @arj2024.bsky.social · 2h
I think it's essential to clarify particularly as Farage likes to deliberately confuse people by claiming EU FoM grants people from ANYWHERE the right to come to the UK. You and I know that's nonsense, but many people are convinced by the conman.

Andrew Jones @arj2024.bsky.social · 2h
I feel it needs to be explained to Brits that it was the individual FoM rights of EU membership that granted them the right to retire in Spain for example. I've met many Brits, in Spain, who thought/think FoM only applies to "foreigners" coming to the UK and not to themselves living in the EU.

It was blindingly obvious from the start that isolating the UK from the EU, ruining its international reputation and weakening a NATO and UN Security Council member were all huge Brexit benefits...for Putin.

I hope we can start calling it "reciprocal EU Freedom of Movement" to help people understand it also grants Brits the right to live, study and work in the EU and DOESN'T allow people from anywhere in the world to flood into the UK (as Farage likes to claim).

With unconstrained electricity generation and a perfect distribution network that would be an option, I wonder if the realities of our struggling electricity infrastructure are playing into these decisions?
010
Andrew Jones @arj2024.bsky.social · 6h
They ought to ONLY subsidise houses prepared to install a package of solar+battery storage+heat pump to minimise, or even eliminate, demand on the domestic end of the electricity distribution network (which is finely balanced and couldn't cope if everyone suddenly had HPs and electric cars).

Andrew Jones @arj2024.bsky.social · 7h
The BBC’s long-standing approach to Brexit debates seems to be “both-siding” them. No matter how insignificant one side might be, as long as there are two people to argue, it works for them.
000
Andrew Jones @arj2024.bsky.social · 7h
Perhaps the Treasury realise we have a supply shortage in electricity generation and they shouldn't encourage domestic electricity demand if they strategically decide to use that electricity for AI data centres? UK Baseload ≈ 29GW 315 AI Data Centres in grid queue ≈ 73GW

The failure to challenge the lies is exactly how the BBC helped Brexit to happen.

The absence of any opposition to Trump is simply staggering (from a UK perspective).

So how come the party with "Green" in its name prefers arguing about Gaza, something a small party has very little control over, rather than throwing its efforts behind an Electrification Action Plan (as the EU wisely now call NetZero)?
100
Andrew Jones @arj2024.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
I suspect electricity generation capacity will be the first constraint that will slow the deployment of AI. Building new electricity generation capacity takes years, even decades, and that'll be far too slow for the AI companies.
000
Andrew Jones @arj2024.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
The risk for them focusing on the Gaza stuff is that it dominates the headlines, perhaps unfairly, and puts off the very voters they need to attract if they wish to pursue an environmental agenda.
000
Andrew Jones @arj2024.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
I understand they may be anti-capitalists, but like it or not, they’ll need to work within that funding mechanism if they want to green the economy through electrification and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. I guess it's more fun debating Gaza...

Andrew Jones @arj2024.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
I'm old enough to remember when the Greens used to campaign on, well, environmental issues. Turning themselves into a party obsessed with Gaza, transgender and culture war issues isn't working quite so well.

The Tories can't be both pro-Brexit and pro-Business...it's one or the other.
000
Andrew Jones @arj2024.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
I wonder what's better for the economy...the Government taking money in tax (but spending it poorly) or allowing it to be given away, generally to family members, free of tax but knowing a big chunk of it will be spent straight away boosting the economy?

The biggest advantage for Labour is the opportunity to grow GDP per capita through net exports. With EU membership, businesses, especially SMEs, could grow their exports to the EU without the post-Brexit costs, admin, and delays that currently come with each and every shipment.

Another Electricity Margin Notice issued by NESO. Not an indication of a blackout, but a message from the System Operator that they need more generation to be able to deal with any adverse events. Two things of interest. It runs from 15:00 to 23:00. The longest period an EMN has ever covered.

LibDems get ignored because they have no longer have any policies that most people are interested in. Yes, I know about care but that's not an issue for most until your parents suddenly need it. Where are the pro-EU policies that are essential to grow GDP (to generate cash for things like care)?

Reciprocal EU Freedom of Movement, as I like to call it, is a massive advantage for Brits, especially young people, who could regain the right to live, study, work, or retire anywhere in the EU. It’s a right I once had but lost thanks to the ignorant Brexiteers.

You also have to question the logic of building a reservoir in a location just 1m above current sea level.

I think work experience is essential. I've always insisted my kids have jobs even though 6th form said it's not advised. A shocking number of Cambridge undergrads have never had a job, not even a Saturday or summer job or something simple like babysitting. Shocking to me anyway.

The EU, and places like New York, ban such AI only interviews but one of the "Brexit Freedoms" is the ability of UK companies to use AI to filter job applicants. Don't you love Brexit!

Andrew Jones @arj2024.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
I still reckon a degree, in a sensible subject, from a decent Uni will always put you in a good position for a job as long as you can battle through the AI video interviews where you are interviewed 100% by a bot. How big consulting firms think AI interviews are acceptable is a whole other story!

I dislike the simplicity of the NEET classification. It leaves well qualified students, like my daughter who graduated from Cambridge earlier in the year, petrified and dispirited they will never get jobs. Of course, she did get a job but it's unhelpful to lazily write their generation off.

Andrew Jones @arj2024.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
The NEET word is so unhelpful. It'd be better to separate out those with degrees. Is it fair to assume that NEETs generally have the lowest levels of academic achievement?

After a decade of Labour avoiding any mention of Brexit you can see why people remain highly sceptical that Burnham will make much difference.
120
Andrew Jones @arj2024.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
It’s pretty daft that people spend £216,000 to £440,000 on a private education when the state system can deliver better academic results for free. When people can afford to pay school fees, they’re able to keep contributing to society through higher taxes.
100
Andrew Jones @arj2024.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
If wealthy people can afford to spend on private schools, they should be able to pay more taxes for the benefit of society as a whole, instead of selfishly focusing solely on their own children?
100
Andrew Jones @arj2024.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
Nice attitude. FYI the FT recently reported that a private education costs on average £216,000 per child. 2 x £216,000 = £432,000 www.ft.com/content/091b...
ft.com
Total cost of privately educating a child in the UK rises to £216,000
Fees for boarding pupils rose slightly faster than day pupils to nearly £440,000

Andrew Jones @arj2024.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
Nonsense, private schools provide a shoddy service to the vast majority of parents. My kids, 100% state school educated, have collectively earned 7 A* grades and 1 A at A-Level. What advantage would I have gained from spending the £432,000 that an average private education would cost?

I thought it was ironic that we had a dunkelflaute (low wind and low solar) meaning the grid relied on gas on the day Burnham talked about removing the influence of gas on electricity generation. www.energylivenews.com/2026/09/29/u...

Well, youngsters deserve the same freedom to live, study or work elsewhere on the continent that I've enjoyed. For their sake we need to push for full EU membership probably via SM+CU.

When 860,000 trees were planted along the A14 in some BNG spreadsheet voodoo they pretty much all died. Somehow the BNG commitment was delivered, despite few of the trees surviving. This is how the planning system, with it's BNG voodoo, destroys the environment. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

I've spent ages trying to fix it until today. With 26H2 I was able to reindex the folders and I can now successfully search for words inside the documents. Finally fixed!

Windows 11 26H2 finally fixes File Manager folder search. For years search has never worked on my folders. I don't know if it's because I name them with leading and trailing underscores, "_Andrew_", to force important folders to the top of the directory list or for some other reason.

Thank goodness we finally have an MP who is brave enough to admit this blindingly obvious fact in public! I fear it's all too little and too slow. Time is the enemy here, getting EU SM+CU membership is critical to kickstart the UK economy by allowing SMEs to effortlessly export to the EU again.
130
Andrew Jones @arj2024.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
For SMEs dealing with the added post-Brexit costs, admin, and delays tied to every EU transaction, nothing could be more important. Getting SMEs exporting more is the only way they can contribute to growing GDP per capita. Please stick with it!
