Back on Bluesky to post this Smokysky picture from #IFPinofranqueado in Cáceres from this past Tuesday. A striking pyrocumulus cloud that apparently reached 12 km altitude, close to the tropopause. Scientifically interesting, personally frightening to see how intense fire seasons are becoming here.

The most iconic figure in the environmental sciences is the Keeling Curve, the CO₂ record from Mauna Loa, Hawaii. @noaa.gov had a wonderful site where you could visualize and download these data, and now it's just gone. These data belong to us and we should not let this happen!
A line graph showing atmospheric CO2 levels at Mauna Loa Observatory from 1955 to 2025. The y-axis represents CO2 mole fraction in parts per million (ppm), ranging from 320 to 420 ppm, while the x-axis is years.

New study out on the role of the stratosphere in the global mercury cycle. A substantial amount of mercury is oxidized in the lower stratosphere, the layer of the atmosphere above ~10 km, with distinct processes from the troposphere. www.science.org/doi/10.1126/... #atmoschem #MakeMercuryHistory

Somehow I missed the memo... why did no one invite me to these conspiratorial plotting meetings?!?!
Pete Hegseth, secretary of Defense

Hegseth, a Fox News host, is a climate denier. He’s claimed climate scientists are part of a conspiratorial left-wing plot to control Americans via the government. “It’s all about control for them,” he said in 2019. “That’s why climate change is the perfect enemy. They get to control your life to deal with it no matter what’s happening.”

🚨New paper alert 🚨 We researched the impact of deforestation on global mercury (Hg) pollution, finding that deforestation is contributing ~10% of anthropogenic mercury emissions. Read more: Paper: pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/... OA PDF: doi.org/10.31223/X5T... MIT news: news.mit.edu/2024/study-g...

Deforestation as an Anthropogenic Driver of Mercury Pollution
Deforestation reduces the capacity of the terrestrial biosphere to take up toxic pollutant mercury (Hg) and enhances the release of secondary Hg from soils. The consequences of deforestation for Hg cycling are not currently considered by anthropogenic emission inventories or specifically addressed under the global Minamata Convention on Mercury. Using global Hg modeling constrained by field observations, we estimate that net Hg fluxes to the atmosphere due to deforestation are 217 Mg year–1 (95% confidence interval (CI): 134–1650 Mg year–1) for 2015, approximately 10% of global primary anthropogenic emissions. If deforestation of the Amazon rainforest continues at business-as-usual rates, net Hg emissions from the region will increase by 153 Mg year–1 by 2050 (CI: 97–418 Mg year–1), enhancing the transport and subsequent deposition of Hg to aquatic ecosystems. Substantial Hg emissions reductions are found for two potential cases of land use policies: conservation of the Amazon rainforest (92 Mg year–1, 95% CI: 59–234 Mg year–1) and global reforestation (98 Mg year–1, 95% CI: 64–449 Mg year–1). We conclude that deforestation-related emissions should be incorporated as an anthropogenic source in Hg inventories and that land use policy could be leveraged to address global Hg pollution.
