I have heard a lot of sermons from Rabbi Brous in my time. I think I feel confident saying this was the best one yet. I really really hope you listen it might change your mind on some things youtu.be/bxjnh10_SYk 1/
It’s hard to explain where I stand on Israel, because it feels like I can never explain it well enough.

I can never say everything that needs to be said in the way it needs to be said. I can never prove I care about Palestine and Palestinians enough or that my heart breaks as I watch the destruction of the promise of an Israel that is everything I was raised to believe it could be. I feel stuck, never saying enough to be heard by those with “Free Palestine” in their bio, but saying too much for fellow Jews.

So when I find something that I can go, here, THIS is what I believe, I need to make sure the most people see it that possibly can. It is Rosh Hashanah, it’s the first day of the year 5787 on the Jewish Calendar. It is a time to reflect on the past year and decide how we want to show up in the year ahead.

And Rabbi Sharon Brous gave the best sermon (we call it a drash) I have ever heard in my 32 years on this planet. It encapsulates exactly where I stand as a progressive Jew.

She speaks with compassion and nuance and kavanah (intention).

It’s not short, it’s a little over half an hour, but I hope you do listen to the entire thing. Listen in chunks or on 2x speed, but really hear her words.

Knoxville, TN

Wed, Sept 9 - Yesterday Knoxville School board swore in their new Chair and Vice Chair after Dems flipped the board, 5-4, in August.

Since 2022, Knoxville School Board has run partisan races, and that has finally paid off.

New members like Brady Jenkins were elected, in large part because they are against book banning:

“The biggest thing is just having a unified vision of what we focus on the school board, not focus on book bans and things like that. Instead, we can hopefully encourage our kids to read the books more. So, we don’t have to worry about political agendas as much as before.”

It’s funny, it was only a couple years ago “no political agenda” was code for a school board candidate being a Republican.

Love that we’re taking this back.
Of course, it’s not all sunshine and rainbows, cause when are my posts ever?

The new chair is Democrat Katherine Bike, and her focus is on the budget, which was a disaster this past year.

The new vice chair is Anne Templeton, who tried to give up her seat to Independent incumbent Vice Chair Travis Wright, who caucuses with the Republicans, but luckily, he declined.

So the vote for both Bike and Templeton ended up being directly along party lines.

Do I think this will be the most progressive school board ever, no, but I do not think book banning will ever be on their agenda, and in a district like Knoxville, that’s a huge win.

Pinal County, Arizona

Wed, Aug 12 - On Aug 7, Pinal County Sheriff, Ross Teeple announced that Pinal County will not be renewing their contract with Flock.

In a video he said:

“I have serious Fourth Amendment concerns with some of the technology contained in those cameras, whether we have access to it or not. I swore an oath to the Constitution to protect your individual liberties until the day I die.”

I can promise you, without heavy pushback from the community he would never have come to this conclusion.

This was just one piece of the puzzle. Flock makes it near impossible to end contracts early, so this just makes it so the contract won’t renew. Luckily, the contract runs out on Sept 29.However, that still won’t remove the physical cameras, just turn them off, and based on a similar situation in Verona, Wisconsin even that isn’t a guarantee. So on Aug 12, the County Board of Supervisors voted 4-1 on a complete termination notice that Flock has 180 days to act on. This will force Flock to remove their cameras, not just turn them off, within 180 days. It’s not ideal, but it’s the best they can do through legal means.

Verona ended up covering the remaining ones with trash bags, so that might happen in Pinal too. But we’ll see in a couple weeks how they handle this after the contract officially expires.

Bottom line, making noise has an impact, even with a Republican Sheriff.

Mon, Aug 10 - Back in mid July an anti gay digital billboard was put up in Lima Ohio. But, as usual, it backfired.

On July 21, Have a Gay Day, a queer mutual aid organization in the state started a fundraiser to add their own billboard to the same digital rotation as the homophobic one, and keep it up.

They raised about $11,000 within a day, which was fine, but pretty in line with previous fundraisers they’d done for billboards.

Then Red Wine and Blue got involved, and this ended up being their most successful fundraiser ever:

“A huge thank you to @redwineblueusa Red Wine and Blue! They posted that we were raising funds for billboards and today made a collective donation on our website of $2,715! With that money being matched dollar for dollar it means that they have given us $5,430 towards billboards! It also means that we have raised nearly $22,000 our largest fundraiser ever to share messages of Love. Thank you!”
The billboards are designed by Rae who goes by Transpainter online. They said:

“As a result, Have a Gay Day has not just gotten one billboard up in response to the original hateful billboard, but rather has organized hundreds of billboards in at least 3 U.S. states that are now going live, catching the attention of several news outlets and public support along the way.”

This is the power of organizing.

A billboards may not seem like a lot, but seeing dozens of billboards saying “you are loved” for every one saying you aren’t makes a difference.

And as of Aug 28, Transpainter is offering to create billboards for any area that wants one with the extra funds that Have a Gay Day raised.

Visibility matters, and these billboards ARE making a difference.

Utah - Menopause 4/
Utah

Mon, Aug 3 - Planned Parenthood Utah announced that they will now provide menopause and perimenopause services.

A lot of people think of Planned Parenthood as the abortion service, and they do do that, but they’re so much more.

There’s some attention and resources for menopause but very little for perimenopause as you can easily see in the comments of the Threads post PPUT made announcing these new services.

As Shireen Ghorbani, President & CEO, Planned Parenthood Association of Utah said:

Perimenopause and menopause have long been misunderstood and under-researched, leaving many people without the care or information they need. As trusted providers of reproductive health care, Planned Parenthood is working to meet patients’ needs and expand access to care during this stage of life. Each State Planned Parenthood organization runs interdependently and they all provide different services, so it’s very cool to see these services come to Utah at all of their facilities.

Watching healthcare for people who can get pregnant be taken more seriously is ALWAYS a win!

And this is just another reason we need Dems in Congress. Republicans don’t want to keep Planned Parenthood funded, but Dems do.

Ord, Nebraska - Flock 3/
Ord, Nebraska

Mon Aug 3 - With a unanimous vote on their city council, Ord Nebraska, with a population of 2100, became the first city in Nebraska to deactivate their Flock cameras.

They are one of 23 communities in the entire country to deactivate already existing cameras. With an additional 77 having either rejected or canceled contracts.

As is often true, this was only possible because the community made noise. Mayor Jeramy Sedlacek told 10 11 Now after the vote:

The people of Ord spoke out. They’re our constituents. That’s who elects us, and that’s who we gotta represent, And they turned out in a good mass of people last night at our agenda or at our meeting. And, very calm, very civil conversations, but we just did what they wanted.

It’s easy to forget, but this what all elected officials should be doing. Our voices make a difference, especially when we elect people who run for office for all the right reasons.

This is a huge win for the activists who fought for this outcome, but also the voters who elected someone who cares what they think.

This is why local elections are so important. If your politicians listen to their constituents, vote to keep them, if they don’t, vote to get rid of them, and get your neighbors to do the same, it really is that simple.

Arizona - Teachers *EDIT: Somehow I conflated two different stories out of Arizona, so that has now been corrected. I genuinely don’t know how I did that, but it was an easy fix. 2/
*Arizona

Tue, July 28 - The Arizona Republican legislature tried to do away with the Arizona Education Association, and failed.

They passed a bill to put a measure on the November ballot to ban school districts from hiring union members, meaning the union wouldn’t be able to operate.

This was retaliation for the AEA attempting to get voters to reform and limit school vouchers. Which didn’t get on the ballot either, by the way. There were duplicate signatures and it was unclear if they passed the required threshold, so while they could hypothetically get it on the ballot, there’s just not enough time to do so before the Midterm.

But while AEA’s measure didn’t make it on the ballot because of the signature discrepancy, Superior Court Judge, Gregory Como determined that the Republican measure was just unconstitutional. A ballot measure that got rid of one union would be fine, but Arizona has the “Separate Amendment Rule,” which means each ballot measure can only affect one thing, The AEA filed a lawsuit saying that the Republican ballot measure would shut down all unions, not just AEA, and Judge Gregory Como agreed:

The Court finds no ambiguity in the phrase “this state or any political subdivision of this state may not negotiate with a labor organization.” The term “labor organization” does not require interpretation because it is defined in HCR 2040 as “any employee representation organization that exists for the purpose of dealing with employers.” Far from limiting the term to teachers’ unions or school employee associations, the definition does not even mention such organizations.

This is a huge win not just for the AEA, but all unions in the state.

I’m sure, if given the opportunity, the Republican legislature will take this ruling under advisement and craft a new bill that doesn’t violate the “Separate Amendment Rule.”

So if you live in Arizona and are wondering why you should vote, here’s a great reason: increasing the number of Dems in the state legislature so Republicans can’t do this.

You can register to vote till Oct 5, and early voting begins on Oct 7, so make a plan and let’s make it so Republicans can never put a measure like this on the ballot again.

President is not the only elected office worth anything.

And that goes for federal offices in general. We need good people in municipal government and county government and state government. We need people with no experience to run for State House, not jump all the way to Senate cause that’s “more prestigious.”PLEASE celebrate how amazing Jon Ossoff is at his job, but do it to help him get reelected THIS year, not run for a totally different office in a matter of months. And just in general, let’s focus on 2026, PLEASE, cause it doesn’t matter who runs for president in 2028 if we don’t get majorities THIS year.
