New recording out by Berkeley's Qadim Ensemble: jweekly.com/2026/08/17/qadim-ensemb… #jewishmusic #ladino
jweekly.com
_Sign up for Weekday J and get the latest on what's happening in the Jewish Bay Area._ For nearly two decades, the Qadim Ensemble has ranged far and wide across a vast sonic realm, highlighting the DNA shared by Jewish, Arabic, Turkish and Balkan musical traditions. But with the Aug. 28 release of the Bay Area group’s third album, “Entre las Huertas,” multi-instrumentalist Eliyahu Sills and vocalist and oud player Rachel Valfer are coming home. The album is a rich collection of Ladino songs from the Ottoman Empire, where many Jews found shelter after the expulsion from Spain in 1492. It is also a manifestation of Sills’ and Valfer’s love for a body of music that resonates deeply in their Jewish souls. “In the past, we were so focused on gathering a little bit from all of these traditions, all the things we love,” Valfer said from the couple’s home in Berkeley. “As we age, it’s like things have become more focused. I find myself more and more called to record and perform what’s mine — Hebrew and Ladino songs. It’s some of the first music I learned as a girl, and I loved it immediately.” “Entre las Huertas,” which translates to “Among the Orchards,” lands in a very different landscape than did Qadim’s previous album, 2020’s “Open the Gates | Sha’ar P’tah Dodi.” With the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel and the subsequent war in Gaza, Middle Eastern music circles have become as fractured as other communities. But Qadim’s mission “has always been to focus on shared humanity and love of the rich cultural heritage of the many ethnic and religious groups of the region,” Sills said. “That hasn’t changed.” Added Valfer, “Our views are very complex. We see a lot of different sides to a lot of different things and we’re not waving a banner. But it’s even more important now to show that we’ve got roots in this part of the world.” They don’t romanticize Ottoman rule, but it was a time before modern nationalism carved up the region. Valfer points out that many of Qadim’s songs exist in multiple languages. And while people may wrangle over who sang it first, people across the Middle East and Balkans often love and sing the same melodies. For Sills, that means “it’s more important than ever to show people of various Middle Eastern ethnicities working together. That feels more important and more tricky.” Sills noted that the band isn’t offering a political solution. “But it’s so important to show there’s this rich cultural history and artistic interchange between Jews and Muslims and Christians, Greeks and Turks and everyone in that area,” he said. For this latest album, rather than crafting elaborate arrangements and polishing the pieces in post-production, they recorded much of the music live in the studio. Later, various guest artists contributed to the tracks, adding new elements like flamenco guitar and Arab qanun, a type of large zither. The mix lets the music breathe, suggesting a salon performance where there’s space for improvisation and unanticipated turns. Ladino lyrics are relatively easy to follow for anyone with Spanish-language familiarity, “which means they’re more accessible to Westerners than an Arabic set,” Sills said. “After performances people always ask about the Ladino songs.” The title track reflects the album’s fragrant vernal sensibility, redolent with female perspectives. Most of the songs were gleaned from the Kantigas tradition of songs associated with women. The Ladino lullaby “Nani Nani” works on multiple levels. While soothing her infant boy with the chorus, the mother unburdens herself in the verses, lamenting her spouse’s infidelity, “imagining what she wants to say to her straying husband,” Valfer said. “Cama de Miriam” is Qadim’s musical setting for lyrics taken from a recently published trove of Judeo-Balkan prekantes (incantations) deployed by women as household protection rituals. Using a haunting Macedonian melody, Valfer chose an incantation that “was probably used at bedtime for a child,” she said. “But I also think it’s for someone dying: ‘Lie down in the bed of Miriam the prophetess.’” The album’s centerpiece is the medley “Ranas, Kocinas & Gallinas,” which weaves together three pieces with a surging Turkish dance groove. The lyrics are playful and sensuous, including a song sung to a newlywed couple, telling them to join the party and save their connubial pursuits for the evening. Qadim Ensemble started recording in 2009 with the album “Eastern Wind.” The arrangements included Sills on bansuri, an Indian side-blown bamboo flute, and ney, a Near Eastern reed flute. With Dan Cantrell on accordion and Faisal Zedan on Arabic percussion, the core group will perform at Ashkenaz in Berkeley on Nov. 12, Congregation Shir Hadash in Los Gatos on Jan. 24, Subud Sonoma in Sebastopol on Jan. 30 and the new JCC East Bay in Oakland on March 18. More information is available at Instagram or Facebook. ### _Related_ J. covers our community better than any other source and provides news you can't find elsewhere. LoC concert, May 2026 by Sephardic song composer Lily Henley (along with accompanying other video) - three weeks before the birth of her baby, Wren: blogs.loc.gov/folklife/2026/07/seph… #jewishmusic #sephardic #sephardicmusic

Sephardic Music with the Lily Henley Trio: Homegrown Plus
Welcome to the latest post in the Homegrown Plus series, featuring Sephardic music with singer and songwriter Lily Henley and her trio. Just like other blogs in the series, this one includes a concert video, a video interview with Lily Henley, and connections to Library of Congress collections. We presented this concert back in May, in celebration of Jewish American History Month. In addition, the entire Homegrown series this year celebrates the 50th anniversary of the American Folklife Center. Lily Henley is a talented singer, songwriter, and fiddler who performs traditional and original songs in the Ladino language. Henley’s music is influenced by Sephardic Jewish traditions from across Europe and western Asia, as well as by Celtic music, American old-time, and other folk music genres. Ladino, also called Judeo-Spanish, is an endangered language that evolved from 15th century Castilian Spanish, with influences from Hebrew, Arabic, Turkish, Greek, and other languages of the Jewish diaspora. Ladino is spoken by Sephardic Jewish communities across the globe. In addition to performing ancient Ladino ballads and love songs, Henley is one of the few songwriters composing new songs in Ladino. Her music mixes old and new sounds, creating a contemporary musical offering that keeps Sephardic traditions relevant for future generations. This concert by Lily was special for several reasons. For one, she usually performs solo or in a duo with her partner Duncan Wickel. For this concert, however, at Lily’s request we were able to also feature bassist Andy Ryan, one of Lily’s favorite collaborators. For this reason, we’re able to say we featured the Lily Henley Trio. Duncan Wickel, Lily Henley, and Andrew Ryan. Photo by Andrea Decker. More importantly, though, we had been trying to get Lily in our series for about three years, but we hadn’t been able to make the dates work. The 2026 concert date we finally booked was quite close to Lily’s due date with her first child. Lily and Duncan became parents about 3 weeks later, on June 2. Their baby goes by the name Wren! We suspect Wren’s arrival may cause at least a brief hiatus from touring, so we’re very glad we finally got to host her parents for one of their last concerts before that happened. The concert was hosted in collaboration with the Weitzman National Museum of American Jewish History and in partnership with the African and Middle Eastern Division of the Library of Congress. We really enjoyed the trio’s renditions of old and new Ladino songs, along with a few American songs and fiddle tunes. Watch the concert in the player below–then scroll down for an interview with Lily! In the Interview, I asked Lily Henley about her upbringing and early musical experiences, and how she became aware of Ladino and her Sephardic heritage. She gave me an overview of Ladino itself and her understanding of the language’s development. She told me how her background as both an American folk musician and a conservatory trained musician influenced her approach to Sephardic songs. She mentioned some of her mentors and influences, as well as her studies with Ladino scholars in Europe and Israel, including Marie-Christine Bornes Varol, Susana Weich-Shahak, and others. Lily Henley and Duncan Wickel perform Sephardic Jewish music during the Homegrown Concert Series in celebration of the American Folklife Center’s 50th anniversary, May 13, 2026. Of course, we talked about her professional career as a musician and a recording artist, and her current work as an ethnomusicologist at Harvard. She’s a fascinating person to talk to, so please listen to the interview in the player below…then scroll down for collection connections and links! ## Collection Connections and Links #### Friends and Partners * First of all, visit Lily Henley online! * This concert was presented in celebration of Jewish American Heritage Month. * The Concert was co-sponsored with the Weitzman National Museum of American Jewish History. * Community support was provided by Sephardic Heritage International DC. #### Concerts and Other Videos with Sephardic Content * Susana Behar Concert and Interview * Three Concerts and an Interview with Flory Jagoda, Trio Sefardi, and other friends * Nani Noam Vazana Concert and Interview * Moroccan-Jewish Musical Memory: The Abraham Pinto Collection (Lecture by Edwin Seroussi) * Musical Soundscapes of Morocco (Lecture by Samuel Torjman Thomas) * Ladino Songs & the Sephardic Diaspora (Concert by Sarah Aroeste, Shai Bachar, and Ellie Falaris Ganelin) #### Collection Guides * Jewish Culture and Traditions: Resources in the American Folklife Center * African, Jewish, and Middle Eastern Studies: Digital Resources at the Library of Congress ## Munchas Grasyas (“Thank You,” in Ladino)!
