Anybody know of large-scale studies on the literacy of older adults (age 65+) in the United States, post-1990s? I'm finding a bunch of "health literacy" stuff, but the National Literacy Institute, National Center for Education Statistics, etc. seem to think that the need to read stops at age 64?

The love interest in the trashy Victorian romance I’m reading right now is named “Baron Kelso,” so unfortunately all I can picture is this:

Bob Kelso from Scrubs says, “Who has two thumbs and doesn’t give a crap? Bob Kelso, how ya doing?”

When using Microsoft Word or Google Docs, don't just make text bigger and bolder to make it a heading. That will work for sighted users, but screen reader users will miss that and just hear it as normal paragraph text. Use actual heading styles, like level 1 through 6.

#a11y hivemind: what, if anything, can be done for accessibility for looping videos on websites? I'm thinking about a video description or equivalent to alt text for a still image. For example, the video overlay banner on the homepage of this coffee site: kaldiscoffee.com

As a technical communication professor, let me say that there is nothing more enjoyable than when I receive an “important safety notice” email about a product I’ve bought that gives me no guidance on 1) what the safety issue is with the product, or 2) what follow-up action I should take. A+ job.

RIP to the hole on the street outside my apartment that’s been there since I moved in last year. I don’t know how the report I filed with the city of Atlanta last week convinced them to finally fill it (and on a SATURDAY!), but I feel almost godlike in my power having done so.

The hole in the street, with a metal plate covering it, and a spray-painted label on the pavement that says “HOLE” in May 2024

The hole in the street, January 2025, with the metal plate shifting to reveal a cavernous inside. Seven orange traffic cones block the hole from traffic.

The hole in the street, February 2025. The spray painted “HOLE” has faded with traffic. The metal plate has shifted even further, revealing a gap of three or more feet.

The hole in the street being filled by a work crew on Saturday, March 1, 2025.
