I'm surprised (though, looking around, maybe I shouldn't be) this was still given credence in 1660. Brahe's sidekick Kepler made his name by describing the nested celestial solids that formed planetary orbits. Both made their living writing horoscopes. Then Kepler discovered ellipses.

I think the confusion arises from a quick scan assuming the sentence to be 'instead of...' rather than 'instead...' (At least, that's what my brain did at first. Potentially nice phrasing, otherwise)
