that song by Sarah Brightman of Phantom of the Opera fame where she covered a track written by her boyfriend but changed the lyrics to be about getting caged up and pissed on. happy for her www.youtube.com/watch?v=hmFU...
Gregorian - Once in a Lifetime lyrics

When you're near me, I close my eyes
I want to feel you by my side
When you kiss me, I close my eyes
I want you by my side

When I realize there's no telling lies
Then I know it once in a lifetime
Making love to you, every time it's new
You know you're my once in a lifetime

When you touch me, I burn inside
Colder chills run down my spine
When you take me, it's hot in love
- Can't get enough!
Let me dive in to pools of sin
Wet black leather on my skin
Show me the floor, lay down the law
I need to taste you more

[Chorus]
Then I feel your sea raining down on me
Can this be my once in a lifetime?
Hell's at heaven's door as I need you more
You know you're my once in a lifetime

[Verse 2]
When you take me and make me cry
Then I feel you satisfy
Show me the cage, it's all the rage
And lock it up

Effective altruism is just about finding better ways of spending charity dollars. It is "rationalist" in the sense that wanting to save more lives is rational. Why is bluesky being so unhinged about malaria nets?

Two sister projects, Project Cyrodiil and Skyrim: Home of the Nords have playable areas but are a long way off. The first Project Hammerfell region's in progress It may seem like a waste to work on regions already in mainline TES games, but the Skyrim project actually predates TES V's announcement

NEvo: Neural-Guided Evolutionary Video Synthesis for Dynamic Visual Selectivity
Yingtian Tang, Sogand Salehi, Ming Zhou, Amir Zamir, Leyla Isik, Martin Schrimpf

The human brain processes dynamic visual input through hierarchically organized, functionally specialized regions. While recent in silico brain encoding models can synthesize optimal stimuli to probe selectivity in different brain regions, prior work has been largely limited to static images, leaving dynamic visual processing underexplored. We introduce a novel neural-guided video synthesis framework that generates stimuli optimized for target brain regions across visual cortex. Our method performs evolutionary search over a structured prompt space, guided by a dynamic encoding model that predicts voxel-level responses to video inputs. By maximizing predicted activity for a target ROI, the framework efficiently discovers hyper-activating dynamic stimuli that consistently surpass handcrafted localizer videos. The synthesized videos recover known selectivities across ventral, dorsal, and lateral pathways, and further reveal systematic differences in sensitivity to temporal dynamics. A searchlight analysis provides new insight into the progression toward increasingly complex social-dynamic features along the lateral stream, further supported by probing with synthesized abstract, non-naturalistic stimuli. Taken together, our framework enables in silico exploration of dynamic visual selectivity, with new predictions for in vivo experiments

🚨 NEW PREPRINT

Videos strongly shape activity across the visual cortex. But can we design videos that maximally drive specific brain regions?

We present NEvo 🧬🧠 — a neural-guided evolutionary framework that synthesizes videos to maximally activate target visual ROIs.

compare the writing in this story to the writing in The Serpent in the Grove, another prize-winning short story that got flagged as AI, written by an author with an AI-generated headshot who admitted to using AI on their linkedin it's the same "author"
Above her, small apples clung to branches, unpicked. Some had fallen, softening into the grass, wasps drunk on their fermenting sweetness. Tart little things, nothing like the supermarket specimens bred for shelf life. No one wanted these apples. Dog walkers, lunch-breakers hunched over phones, tourists squinting at maps – everyone passed without seeing.

But Deepa saw them. Had been seeing them for months, these Friday evenings when she left the office at seven – early, by her team’s standards – and walked here instead of home to her Bethnal Green flat, where the rent had increased again and the letting agent’s emails sat unanswered.

She pressed her palm against the trunk. The bark was warm despite the autumn chill, as if the tree held summer inside it still – hoarded heat, remembered light.

Something in her body released.

The tears came quietly, the way winter rain comes down in London: persistent, unhurried. Not dramatic sobbing, just a steady leak, her body admitting what her mind wouldn’t. She was empty. The light her name promised – Deepa, lamp – had guttered somewhere between sixty-hour weeks and meetings where she performed enthusiasm for initiatives that would change nothing; between promotions awarded to men who’d started after her and feedback that praised her as brilliant, really brilliant, but not quite ready. Not yet. Maybe next cycle.

Wilfred’s rum-shop leaned into the road like a rotten tooth. Inside, boards blackened by smoke and sweat, the air sweet with cane and forgetting. Coins meant for rice or kerosene slid across the counter and came back white rum hot as apology. One drink opened the chest, two turned fear into courage’s cheap cousin, three steadied the hand enough to write the future in invisible ink.

She moved through that shop like heat through dry bush.

They called her Zoongie. Maybe it was a name; maybe rain took a shape and decided to keep it. She had the kind of walking that made benches become men. Hair tumbling wild, a dress that caught and released light, laughter with iron under it. Eyes that skimmed and did not land, as if what she wanted was elsewhere and she had to pass through men to get there. She wore the island’s mixed bloodlines like a crown – African in the hips, Spanish in the cheekbone, East Indian in the hair when the rain kinked it, Carib in the way her gaze could bless and warn at once.

Vishnu watched too long. The rum told him she noticed. The rum made a spilled drink a signal, a brush of hand a promise, a sorry whispered near his ear an invitation. Zoongie never looked back. The rum said she didn’t need to.

After that, Sita became obstacle by existing. Not for anything she did wrong, but for how exactly she fitted the life that fenced him in: the quiet chores, the patient hands, the unlit lamp. Vishnu began to plan with the patience of a reptile – cold, ancient. He studied how Sita walked the track alone, how no neighbour watched their yard, how the plank over the old well at the acre’s edge lifted on one loose nail.

Teortaxes @teortaxesTex
The eventual end state of labor under automation has been understood by smart men (ie not shallow libshits) for ≈160 years since Darwin Among the Machines. The timeline to full automation was unclear. Technocrats & some Marxists expected it in the 20th century. The last 14 years in AI match models that predict post-labor economy by 2035-2045. Vinge, Legg, Kurzweil, Moravec and others were unclear on details but it's obvious that if you showed them the present snapshot in say 1999, they'd say wow, yep, this is the endgame, almost all HARD puzzle pieces are placed
The current technological stack is almost certainly not the final one. But it will suffice to build everything needed for a rapid transition to the next one - data, software, hardware, and it looks extremely dubious that the final human-made stack will be paradigmatically much more complex than what we've done in these 14 years.
Post-labor economy = post-consumer market = permanent underclass for virtually everyone and state-oligarchic power centralization by default.
As an aside: «AI takeover» as an alternative scenario is cope for nihilists and red herring for autistic quokkas. Optimizing for compliance will be easier and ultimately more incentivized than optimizing for novel cognitive work.
Frantic attempts to «escape the permanent underclass» in this community are not so much about getting rich as about converting wealth into some equity, a permanent stake in the ballooning posthuman economy, large enough that you'd at least be treading water on dividends, in the best case – large enough that it can sustain a thin, disciplined bloodline in perpetuity.
Current datacenter buildup effects and PC hardware prices are suggestive of where it's going. Consumers are getting priced out of everything valuable for industrial production, starting from the top (microchips) and the bottom (copper and electricity). The two shockwaves will be traveling closer to the middle.Niemontal @niemontal

You're on edge about something. Some things will be more expensive, some cheaper.
You yourself were just discussing those insane lasers recently that anyone can buy on AliExpress for whoever. Back in the day, stuff like that was only available to labs and corporations.

Teortaxes @teortaxesTex

This is a relic of a bygone era
production will continue to become more efficient, but that doesn't mean the purchasing power of the buckwheat man will keep growing. If their equipment can be used to make, say, optical transceivers for data centers and boost turnover by 400% by selling transceivers to corporations, then making lasers for buckwheat folks is an opportunity cost—such companies don't get loans, no one invests in them. So they'll stop making lasers and prices will skyrocket, we'll be scrounging on Avito. And that's how it is everywhere. The root of the problem isn't that there's suddenly demand for some isolated component like DRAM, but that the economy is restructuring around expected profits from automated labor—these markets are potentially infinite, and capital won't just flow into them; it'll *exit* markets oriented toward consumers.

MAYBE China has enough overcapacity and latent production power to avoid making such harsh choices. MAYBE. But the rest of the world is clearly already struggling and won't manage for at least another 5 years, and over those 5 years, jobs will be snatched away from the buckwheat folks too, which further reduces the appeal of producing anything for consumers. The layoffs happening right now aren't so much about direct automation as about the need to balance budgets amid rising costs for automation. It's a very similar mechanism to the one described above.

    That's all I mean by post-consumer market. I'm done.

Manifest Destiny: Greenland, Cuba, and the New American Colony // Nick Solheim, Dr. Sumantra, Mike Gibson
Nick Solheim, Dr. Sumantra, and Mike Gibson came to tell us why America needs Greenland, and honestly? The math does pencil. Currently it’s a chunk of land three times bigger than Texas, housing fewer people than a mid-sized concert venue, costing Denmark $500 million yearly just to keep the lights on. Between its rare earth minerals and Arctic shipping routes that dodge the usual maritime traffic jams, it’s basically the world’s biggest foreclosure opportunity. The plan? Copy-paste the Homestead Act, send 100,000 American frontiersmen up there, and boom: the New New England. Sure, the Danes said no last time, but winners never quit, right? — Elsa

Passing off AI writing as your own is not theft from the authors of its training data, but it is theft from anyone who paid time and money to read *your* words
The writers and showrunners of The Littlest Wife are called Jennifer Ames and Steve Turner. They are apparently quite a powerful pair; they previously worked together on Boardwalk Empire. I don’t know exactly how much they got paid for ‘nursing the burn of every sip,’ but I’m sure it was plenty. Enough to feed an entire village of semi-literate Cambodian peasants for a hundred years. I’m just not sure why they should get that money, when their job could just as well be done by any one of those semi-literate Cambodian villagers. This is the democratising power of AI I’ve heard so much about, isn’t it? If you’re a pair of lazy, talentless hacks, gobbling up opportunities more interesting people would kill for and then not even bothering to write the show yourself, sooner or later, the people who sign your cheques will cut out the middleman, and you will deserve it.
