Food banks run on diesel trucks. Diesel hit a record $6.53 a gallon on September 21. Greater Boston Food Bank's chief operating officer put it: "If I am spending more on fuel, I can't buy as much food." Every extra dollar for fuel is a dollar not spent on food, 4hunger.org

This El Niño just broke the ocean temperature record. Heat alone could kill 451,000 people by February, before counting a single death from hunger. The UN has a plan to protect 8.8 million people before their harvests fail. Only one government has funded it, with about $3 million.

El Niño is causing floods, droughts, fires and smoke around the world. Governments are not mobilizing humanitarian aid to help people follow with the hunger and devastation that accompanies these.

“If the temperature of the Pacific were the variable that decided the death toll, 2027 would be catastrophic beyond any precedent. It has no connection to the Pacific at all, it will be whether governments help the people that 150 years of El Niño records say will suffer from hunger.”

The human numbers are already on the record, before a seed is in the ground. Famine Early Warning Systems Network expects delayed and below-average rains to cut planting and crops. The African Development Bank has put the cost of this El Niño to affected African economies at up to $20 billion.

Half of the population of the Earth lives in Asia and grows their own food. Whether tens of millions of people experience food shortages from the Super El Niño depends on the harvest of crops that haven’t been planted yet an on whether countries impose export bans.

Record soybean crop arriving late is the mechanism by which the safrinha maize is lost, rather than a separate risk, is the sharpest move in the piece. There is a deadline on anticipatory action: it is fixed by the planting window, not by the drought index. What happens to crops next is the key!

“A drought you can see coming for months. A heat wave you can see coming only for days. By the time you can feel it, the pollen is already dead, the milk has already stopped, and the forecast of food production for the season has already dropped precipitously.”

Wheat that stops growing at 27 degrees; dairy cows simply stop making milk due to the heat; cornfields are cooked in a heat dome; One climate driver arrives without a forecast, in hours, not seasons, single most devastating climate variable standing between the world and its next hunger crisis.

A season of record heat, drought, and marine warming is straining the people who grow and catch the nation's food and adversely impacting the nation’s food supply, just as the federal government is removing America’s food safety net.

Hunger by Design: How the “Big Beautiful Bill” Is Emptying Massachusetts’ Food and Health Safety Net OBBBA, signed on the Fourth of July, is pushing tens of thousands of Massachusetts children off food assistance and setting the stage for the steepest Medicaid losses of any state in the country.

Three intertwined forces: 1) a rapidly warming climate, 2) spreading conflict, and 3) an economic squeeze on the world’s poorest have driven global hunger to double its pre-pandemic level, even as the safety net meant to catch the falling is being destroyed.

Sea level rise is causing the loss of vital farmland miles inland from the sea and damaging vital nurseries for fish and shellfish. Sea level rise is causing crop loss and declining catches in most American fisheries.

This was the best way to recycle our Christmas tree! However, our Labradoodle Mocha was not amused when one of the goats jumped against our car when the tree was still strapped to the roof.
