Today is 𝘈𝘨𝘢𝘱𝘦's official pub day 🥳! If you haven't ordered a copy yet, now's the perfect time to do so: shorturl.at/jlrxX. I'm very proud (if a little nervous) to see this collection finally make its way into the world--here's hoping it'll find a good home on some queer(-loving) bookshelves!

Every day I resent that the techno utopia dreams I had as a kid have curdled into techno pessimism because of the tech oligarchs. I want to be excited about AI and self-driving cars, not worried they’re just anti-human wealth extraction tools! Makes me mad enough to go smash some spinning jennies

“Country club membership is at capacity,” Tom said waspishly. (Only Swiftie I’ve ever come up with—reminded of it now as I read an article about elite money managers in the Gold Coast)

Good moment to say: People keep telling me my novel has Widow's Bay vibes! ☑️ Eerie New England island setting ☑️ The locals have Something To Hide ☑️ Scary and funny ☑️ [Redacted for spoilers] but this plot point overlap kind of blows my mind 🤯

Three episodes into Furious and the most skin-crawling, horrifying thing that’s happened on-screen so far was a character massaging raw chicken with her hands and then handling her phone. I could not watch the screen.

Also any words he deemed unnecessarily high-falutin’. When this left me with a poor grade, he told me I could make it up by writing a simple paper about how brilliant Thomas Friedman was. Anyway: that’s my one interaction with the kind of guy who thinks writers should be replaced by ChatGPT

In college, I had a SV techbro type as a teacher once. We had to write papers but I was an English major and he loathed English, said all it did was confuse people. He went through my papers and marked me down for every sentence that wasn’t simple declarative or compound with only one clause added.

They disinvented the VCR. You might think that the reason we don't have VCRs anymore is because VCRs were supplanted by DVDs, PVRs and streaming, but that's not the case. They had it in for the VCR from the very start, and they never stopped trying to kill it. Eventually, they succeeded. 1/
A 1960s family living room in which a mom, dad and two kids are mesmerized by a cabinet-style TV. The image has been altered. The TV has an early 1990s VCR atop it. The TV screen is displaying a cross-sectioned human head with brains and spine on display. A huge fist has materialized in the room, with bloody spiked knuckle-dusters, smashing into the VCR. The oil painting over the sofa has been replaced with a pulp image of a male head, its cranium removed and replaced by a dome. Inside the dome is a red eight-segment VCR clock, displaying 12:00. The background in the painting is a tangle of cassette tape. The whole image's colors have been boosted, giving it an overexposed look.

Somehow never heard of Half-Blood Blues before, which is atrocious since it’s all my sweet spots—Weimar and jazz and the achey nostalgia of moving back and forth across vast stretches of time. Love it so far.

Reading Gibson’s Sprawl trilogy for the first time since my early twenties and realizing just how closely my first attempts at writing aped his style. And then revising this novel and realizing how twenty years later I’ve mastered none of the techniques that comprise that style.

Reading a Miles Davis bio and just remembered I got in trouble at work (gas station) for playing Bitches Brew on the stereo. Boss thought it was a prank to scare off the customers but when he made me turn it off the customer was indignant: “you can’t make him turn that off! That’s ~jazz~, man!”

I’m a little late to this, but Soundtrack to a Coup d'Etat is mind-blowing. It’s not the kind of documentary designed to impart new knowledge so much as a powerfully affecting resurrection of its historical subject (Congo independence, to oversimplify). It feels like a lyric essay.
