UKSG is coming up next week and I’m looking forward to it! It’s always such a great opportunity to catch up with friends and make new ones! I’m also going to be talking about some of my initial results from my PhD research… no pressure 😱
A small advertising poster that reads - looking back to look forward, what is the real-world impact of open access on our libraries - and has the banner UKSG 49th annual conference along the top

CPUs are getting worse.

We’ve pushed the silicon so hard that silent data corruptions (SDCs) are no longer a theoretical problem.

Mercurial Cores are terrifying because they don’t hard-fail; they produce rare, but *incorrect* computations!

My cartoon for this week’s @newscientist.com
Panel one: Two scientists stand beside a complex apparatus. One says:
“We can't be sure of the outcome until we start the machine, but I know it will give us a new and unusual perspective on our world.”
The second scientist flicks a switch.

Panel two: “Well, this is rather more new and unusual than I had expected.” The scientists are now within the speech bubble and the speech is outside it.

Oh I do like to be beside the seaside… ⛱️☀️🍦 Successfully arrived in, and had a good explore of lovely Brighton in advance of #UKSG2025 starting tomorrow.
Happy me with headphones and a giant soft serve ice cream. There is a carousel in the background. Brighton pier in the sunshineBrighton Royal Pavilion entrance. Columns adorn the front and there are Indian style domes on the roof. The path in front is painted with swirls of blue, pink, yellow and green

I have been collecting stickers and badges during the conference and I love it!! #UKSG2025
A conference lanyard that reads UKSG, Kirsty Wallis, UCL. It has a pale blue sticker that says NLISN and a yellow opening the future sticker. On the bottom of the name tag is a flag that reads speaker in gold letters. On the lanyard strap are three badges, ebook sos, the book whisperer, and one which reads ‘I’m a librarian, what’s your superpower’

Cold but still captivating.
Looking down to Canterbury City from the University of Kent campus, on an especially frosty morning. The sunrise is largely bright but partially hidden behind a streak of dark, low, cloud, extending to the right. Canterbury Cathedral spires are visible popping up through the haze - as always. Long, dark, winter shadows of the local tree-line extend into the foreground.
