Dr Shapland said “Old buildings have long memories, and I find it quite moving to realise this is where Oscar and [his companion] Alphonse stayed 130 years ago. It was an important time in Wilde’s life and marks a point just before things fell apart for him.”

With the building stripped back for restoration ASE's Dr Michael Shapland could see parts of the original structure, which he compared with historical floor plans and a description of the suite given by Wilde during his infamous trial in 1895. He found just one set of rooms that matched.

Old, tired and used PPE now is sent to an external provider for professional deep cleaning and returned for re-use. If it’s not salvageable, the PPE is made into waste product fibres used for blankets, pet bedding and insulation. This reduces waste AND saves money on buying new equipment. Win win!

UCL Archaeology South-East @archsoutheast.bsky.social · 31/07/2026
What do we do with our old PPE? Recycle it! Personal Protective Equipment like high vis outerwear helps protect our team from the elements and keeps them visible and safe while excavating. Every now and then it needs replacing, but that can generate a lot of waste. One solution is to recycle it!

A dodecahedron – a 12-sided 3D shape – made of greyish metal. It is about 50mm in size. Each face has a circular hole of different sizes, some of which have concentric incised circles around them. Each corner of the object has a small circular knob. The dodecahedron is nearly complete, missing only one side.A gloved hand holds a dirty and corroded freshly-found dodecahedron on an archaeological siteThe dodecahedron shown before and during conservation. Thick metal corrosion covers the artefact which is then mostly removed in the second image, which is stunningly clear compared to the first. The dodecahedron after conservation, held by a nitrile-gloved hand. As cheeses would take the shape of the press – often just concentric circles from the base appearing on its surface – the unusual decoration on this piece may also have been imprinted onto the cheese. Fancy!

Presses like this compressed and shaped cheese curds, squeezing out excess moisture through small holes – one of which is just visible on our example where the base meets the wall.
A fragment of a Roman cheese press held by an archaeologist. The fragment would just about fit in the palm of their hand. The surface shown is the inside of the press. It has radiating lines on the base, deep vertical incised lines on the side leading up to swirling incised lines just below the rim. Just visible is a small ~5mm diameter hole in the base, where moisture would have been squeezed out.

Happy #NationalCheeseDay! 🧀 Check out this rare, decorated example of a ceramic Roman cheese press! It was found near Southampton during ASE excavations ahead of a new water pipe called #SouthamptonLinkMain, funded by Southern Water.
A fragment of a Roman cheese press shown from two angles. The pale brown fragment is about 10cm wide and 7cm tall; bowl-shaped with a flat base. The outer surface is plain, but the inner has radiating lines on the base, deep vertical incised lines on the side leading up to swirling incised lines just below the rim.
