The workshop began with a presentation of the ARTHA project by the PI @carolinepartiot.bsky.social , followed by an introduction to the PHC Amadeus funding programme, supported by the French Institute at the Embassy of France in Austria and presented by its representative, Nina Grisot.

The first in-person workshop of the ARTHA project took place at the @oeai.bsky.social @oeaw.bsky.social in Vienna over two inspiring days! We were delighted to welcome colleagues from Austria, France, and the Czech Republic to work together on the concepts and approaches of #archaeothanatology.

This presentation summarizes the current status of handling skeletal human remains in preventive archaeology and discusses its advantages, shortcomings and limitations with particular regard to curation and scientific analysis.

Excavation, recovery and post-excavation processing of these remains is governed by guidance set by the Austrian Federal Monuments Authority according the Austrian Federal Monuments law.

“In Austria, about 95% of all archaeological excavations each year take place within the context of preventive archaeology and are usually carried out by commercial archaeological providers. Naturally, these projects also bring about a large number of skeletal human remains.
