As rocky as his exit was, I think to some extent this may be a positive Nate Erskine-Smith legacy.

It’s crazy to me that, at last check, one of the two Canadian sports channels (TSN) still hadn’t figured this out. Raptors games are split between them and Sportsnet, and I wind up watching more of the latter’s because of the start-after-the-kids’-bedtime option.

On reflection I might be giving the oil industry a bit too much credit here, since it hasn’t exactly made the most enthusiastic case for the pipeline. So congrats to the province and the feds, at least.

Congrats to the oil lobby, Alberta government and PM on getting us to a point where a relatively pragmatic editorial board can champion a new pipeline without even having to address environmental/climate concerns (save for passing carbon-capture reference). www.theglobeandmail.com/opinion/edit...

But taking on the full cost of building the thing, when private proponents didn’t want to touch it even with those other supportive policies, basically means betting on demand (and the supply to meet it) beyond what the industry itself is willing to do. That’s deeply weird.

Not blocking a pipeline if there are proponents, fine. Some degree of subsidization to mitigate project risk (sunk costs of it’s thrown off by regulatory issues, legal challenges, etc.), maybe.

I won’t belabour this because I’ve written about it before, but the part of Carney’s pipeline pivot that I find impossible to justify is the government taking on the demand risk.

As a general rule, if you have a vote, put it toward what you want most or against what you want least. Don’t overthink it. (This also might have spared the world Trump, if a greater number of relatively progressive Americans had applied it.)

Evolving view: 1.) The meatiest part of permitting changes (expediting existing processes) is good, but there’s needless risk in more marginal stuff; 2.) Labour stuff largely clarifies status quo, but in a way unions still feel obliged to oppose; 3.) Lumping together may not have been the best idea.

I don’t know if I’d say the same for the changes to environmental regulations. Among other issues, the prospect of allowing construction on some projects to begin before approvals have been granted seems like it would make it extremely unpalatable to then not grant them.

A weekend column on corporate Canada’s love for Carney, on display for our visitors at this week’s summit. There are many eras in which there would have been huge public backlash, but certainly not this one…for now, at least. www.thestar.com/business/as-...

Adam Radwanski: Corporate Canada’s love-in with Mark Carney is like nothing we’ve seen before
Prime Minister Mark Carney’s cozy relationship with corporate Canada may drive investment, but faces potential backlash if political moods shift, writes Adam Radwanski.

Adam Radwanski @aradwanski.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
The one negative Carney had conditioned us to expect is that he’s not very good at managing expectations.
150
Adam Radwanski @aradwanski.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
Particularly the latter. I think he got lucky when U.S. overreach gave him an out from a bad trade deal he was moving toward signing. But the foreign investment summit followed by the EU visit has (at least) been a hell of a communications victory, in terms of conveying that Trump can't isolate us.
3472
Adam Radwanski @aradwanski.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
Even as someone with some significant reservations about Carney's governance style, I have to say: The way that he's recently managed to both go out on a limb in standing up to Trump, and make us feel less alone by leveraging his international relationships, is really impressive.
310011
Adam Radwanski @aradwanski.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
Canada stopped deferring to the U.S. on China - a country toward which Ottawa and Washington actually shared some concerns - because Trump was too erratic. It’s pretty funny that he now thinks he can dictate our relationship with Europe.

I’ll just add: Personally, airport privatization is not, in and of itself, something I get all that worked up about. But think it’s important for what it may symbolize in terms of the types of foreign investment we’re seeking.

I think it’s a mistake for Carney to use his speech this morning to announce airport privatization. It really distracts from the main pitch at this summit, which is to invest in building new things, and it invites opposition.

I think this was a bit of a scramble.
010
Adam Radwanski @aradwanski.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
As I now understand it, it’ll largely be up to Ottawa and (especially) the premiers to make the case for some of them, while the proponents hover in the summit’s general vicinity in case any of the visitors are excited to speak with them. (Mostly that’ll happen subsequently, if at all.)
060
Adam Radwanski @aradwanski.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
On a more substantive note, my initial understanding was that many of the proponents of the projects listed in the pitchbook would be in the room tomorrow. That doesn’t actually seem to be the case for most of them.

The few announcements of new investments will almost certainly be ones arranged in advance. The summit will be more about starting relationships and spurring enthusiasm for investments to come, and there aren’t many reliable metrics for vibes,
