Last I heard in the first administration when he did have a role Trump gave it to him "permanently", but I don't know if anyone actually ever successfully challenged that after he left. If they also did a conflict of interest check then they ignored literally everything in the report

I'm not even sure ending the war would save them at this point, at least not completely - it would mitigate some damage but we're so close to midterms I don't know how much of that relief would be felt before election day especially since early voting and mail ballots are already underway
