#ResistanceRoots Ann Jarvis was born on this day in 1832 in Culpeper, Va. She was a social activist who became a driving force for public health and community reconciliation during and after the Civil War. Her work inspired her daughter to create Mother’s Day, although she later opposed it. /1

Ann Jarvis. Jarvis’s activism was driven by civic and religious duty and personal tragedy. Several of her children died in early infancy, largely due to the preventable diseases that ran rampant through Appalachian border towns. Rather than retreating into despair, Jarvis channeled her loss into a determination to ensure other mothers would not have to endure the same heartbreak. Her work began as a public health education effort that transitioned to caring for sick and wounded soldiers during the Civil War. After the war, she focused on community reconciliation driven by a maternal desire to stop the cycle of violence. (Editorial note: It was difficult to find a photo of Ann Jarvis. There are many pictures of her daughter Anna, and many are mislabeled. However, I traced this one to a German-language Wikipedia page and to a History of American Women page that shows pictures of Ann and Anna side by side. I’m fairly certain this is legit.)

In 1850, Ann married Granville E. Jarvis, and their family quickly grew to more than 11 children. However, only four of them survived into adulthood. Through her brother, Dr. James Reeves, she learned that poor hygiene, contaminated water and contagion were the primary causes of child mortality. /3

Granville E. Jarvis was a successful merchant who built this home in 1854. He and Ann raised their family there, and it was the geographic centerpiece for many of the historic events of Ann’s life. In December 1856, a plague swept through Taylor County. Three of Ann’s young children died within the same month. This concentrated heartbreak inside these walls drove Ann and her brother to form the very first Mothers’ Day Work Clubs to teach sanitation. The home also features a hidden trapdoor in the kitchen floor leading to a basement area capable of concealing up to 50 people fleeing slavery, which Ann managed as part of the Underground Railroad network. The house also served as the first field headquarters for Union General George B. McClellan during the 1861 western Virginia campaign. Thousands of soldiers encamped right across the road, and it was to this house and the surrounding camps that Ann brought her clubs to treat soldiers suffering from typhoid.
